The theme got me thinking a lot. I knew I wanted a miniature with lots of skin showing. And a figure I thought I could make look good as my opponent isn't gonna be easy.

But what colour? I wanted it to atleast make a tiny bit of sence instead of just slapping on a random colour, or atleast making sence for me. Then it hit me (not litterally though they are known for their roudy nature), let's do a Nac Mac Feegle. They are blue (different colour flesh.... check), and I just love them. So then came the hunt for a figure i could make fit the bill. Nemain it became. Lots of hair to get the red Feegle hair in, lot's of skin, and scotish looking enough for me with possibilities for tartan to get the Mac Feegle look even more. I'm happy with how she turned out

The base I went crazy on as well. Gotta try to impress the judges afterall. The water effect is done by a truckload of layers from 2 sorts of materials to create it. Valleyo's still water and the more paste like one to build up the waves. The white reflections on the water are mostly painted on on the tips of those sculpted ripples to make the water look wilder and more alive.

Well, if the theme were "basing" you'd have it hands down.

It's an excellent job, but the mini seems to take a back seat to the base.

The base is really awesome. The hair seems a tad flat to me. But wow, that base is awesome. How did you make those rocky edges?

The rocky edges are from a course curk platter you put underneath a pan. Those are much courser then the corks you put in bottles and quite essential for this rocky edge look. I break of the rough shape with tweezers (not cutting it at first as doing it this way will give you a rougher look, again important for that rockt edge look), Then I fill in some gaps where I don't want them with little cork pieces cut to shape and putty. Finally I cut some edges with a scalpel where I think it needs a bit more and make sure the origional cork edges aren't there anymore so it 'sall cut and breaklines where I made them. Add sand at places... voila

Oh there is no editing comments here. Ok double post then. I admit I went a bit nuts on the base so I was in danger of overpowering the miniature a bit. But I basically decided I didn't mind once the base started turning out nicely. Didn't want to replace it with a less elaborate one to make the mini stand out more as i liked the setting like this. The blue background might not help much in having her stand out, but it was the best colour to have the fig come out overall. So I just left it. The hair could have been done with a few more sharp highlights. I did go from rather dark brown/red to bright orange, but all transisions are done relatively soft. That was a deliberate desission as i liked the softness of it. But it does make it look less popping on a picture.

I actually found it hard to make out the tartan at first, very hard to paint though obviously. Great base and NMM on sword though.

That basework is on eof the best I've ever seen!

I also had to look up on Wikipedia what a Nac Mac Feegle was. I see they're from Terry Pratchett books, which I've heard of but never read (yet!). A kind of twisted parody of Smurfs.

Now (just to give Cindy something to worry about) I have to decide how I'm going to interpret the theme "Flesh of a different color) considering blue is different for a human, which is what the bare mini was supposed to represent, BUT blue is considered normal for a Nac Mac Feegle thus not different. Hmmmmm...... got to give this some thought.

True, for a Nag Mac feegle blue is natural but it sure ain't a normal colour for nemain :P Then I can always say it isn't a Feegle, just inspired by it... and voila within a few words it's all differnt and unnatural again... there :P

@Duende, I had the same dilema with my own model. My first idea the flesh is different but for the model it was perfectly natural, so I had to go extreme! Youll see what I mean when its posted.

Nice explination cindy!

I just realized what makes this not feegley to me.

There's nothing in the mini to give a sense of scale.

She's just a blue woman. I'd buy the feegle thing if you had put her standing ona a boot or carrying a cow (though that would have been very hard indeed).

Oh, and like they said, blue isn't different for feegles, but I have overcome that problem with my KDSF

Well actually she IS just a blue woman to start with. I just named her Feegle to have it made a bit more sence to me as i struggled with the theme (I had a more fun idea but that one was to timeconsuming to pull off in the time I had as it included heavy conversions and multiple miniatures). I needed some slight logic even if it was just for me, as I never really liked just slapping on a wierd color on a miniature for no other reason then making it a oddity to fit the theme.

So I made it more or less a tribute or reference to Pratched, more then actually creating a feegle as such. I just love the Feegles... best thing Pratched ever created... I prefer them even above Luggage and Rincewind

It had actually occured to me right at the start that if I did a true unmistakable feegle it might go against the theme (as the skin wouldn't be unnatural then sort off), so I did not force myself to make it unmistacably feegly (like putting cows or huge bottles of liquor on the base )

I even doubted if I should name her what I did now for those reasons or even mention my inspiration... but thought what the heck, as long as i'm having fun (like with going nuts on the base ). And I had mentioned my inspiration on the WIP thread anyway already.

Solid work here! Your sword is great and the conception is admirable as well. Does she have a Scottish brogue. The house hold here is addicted to pratchett I am not all about them but they knew your concept right off. Hair color is spot on for me nice highlight tones.

Ah, my opponent!
Terrific piece Cindy. The blue skin and red hair work wonderful together and they convince me as real. The base is very, very, very cool and wonderful too, but I do think it is too big and the miniature kind of drowns in it (no pun intended). I would have added another rock for her to stand on so she would stand out more. Now she blends in too much.
The NMM is very cool. The tartan could use some more work I think.

Terrific job! I think yours is better than mine, but at least I'd know I've lost from an excellent opponent and excellent miniature

Wow. Really great painting on the skin and hair. Great complementing colors, too.

Great work on the base.

Certainly one of the best this round, and in so little time!

And the sharks circle .. (hah).

Beautiful work Cindy though I've come to expect that from your pieces. Smooth and blended well and of course the base seems to have taken on a life of its own.

Absolutely gorgeous. Like a mix of an Indian Goddess with a Celtic one. The highlights on the hair may be a little soft, but they really seem to fit her and they definately give enough feel of depth for the stylism to be an assent and not a drawback.

I'm not familiar with the Feegle inspiration for this, but that doesn't stop me from seeing how wonderful a job it is. I love the hair in particular, both the colour and the handling of it. (I've seen very few versions of Nemain's weird hairstyle that 'work' for me.) The base is lovely and natural, and I don't find it overpowering at all, there's something about Nemain's contemplative pose I've always felt almost requires a bit of scenery. One of my faves!

Wow.

Now there's more to say I guess. I really like the base, it's not overpowering the miniature, while it's still very elaborate. The highlighting of the hair is very good, without using that many straight white highlights most people resort to. Not too fond of the sword though. Good overall choice of colours, not that I expected any less of you. Good luck in round 2!

Well, since I wasn't sure if she was a Nac Mac Feegle or Nac Mac Feegleish, I split the difference. Excellent job as usual, Cindy. Of course the base is beautiful! I still stare at that every time I look at this.
