This is the diorama I'm making for my girlfriend's birthday which is coming right around the corner (less than a week left). I'm gonna be busting my butt to get it all done and painted to the standard I'd like, but I think I'll be able to make it (big thanks again to Nathan on the bases).
The idea is based on a tutorial I saw on CMON about making a display case using a model car display case.
http://www.coolminiornot.com/article/aid/493
I used pink foam board, cork, sand and rocks for the diorama setup. I used greenstuff for the bases to go with the flame base stuff. I plan on putting rare-earth magnets under the base of the miniatures so they will stick to the diorama, which is why I put the metal washers on the diorama where the minis go.
Anyway, here are the pictures:

She enjoys the minis I paint, but I just wish she would take the step to paint them as well. She started painting 1/2 of a Devourer Wolf from Rackham and it was looking pretty darn good for no previous practice (she's a highschool art teacher). I'm sorta hoping she'll take up enough interest to paint up a whole warband as well, or at least a few mercenaries.

Looks to be an interesting Idea, might have to steal the display case idea, would make transportation easier.
The flames look like a nifty base piece.

::Progress update::
I'm not disappointed with my results on painting so far, but I do feel like I'm having to sacrifice a certain level of quality to try and get things done by the weekend. I'm probably just stressing out though (been getting little sleep). My plan is to get all the basic painting done on the minis and the diorama, and then paint in lighting effects based off the fire (which will be blue)
I'm almost done with the small Nephilims, and hope to get the mature Nephilim painted tonight, followed by Lillith tomorrow night. I will then do the bases/diorama/lighting effects on Thursday if all goes according to planned, which will hopefully have it done by Friday for the birthday weekend.
I am unsure if I like the lighter blue hair color on the Nephilims. I sorta like the contrast the black hair gives (even though its just a base coat black), but I doubt I will change it purely based on time.
I got the magnets yesterday (tiny rare-earth magnets), and tried them out and they worked out about as well as I could have hoped for. I can hold the diorama upside down and the minis stay in place, but they are fairly easy to take out of their spot when I want to. It will make traveling with them very easy. I put 2 magnets under each base, but think I might have been able to use just 1 on the smaller minis because I only have 2 on the mature nephilim and he stays in place too.
Here are a few pic updates:

I sometimes wish I had the skills to make these nice diorama-storage combos, it always looks so good yet still you can pick the miniatures out and play.
on a small sidenote... seeing him assembled again I really prefer the mature without wings.. would that be bothersome ruleswise ?

Looking good... I am really liking the idea to store and display the warbands. Great use of the flame bases. I think I will have to order some for mine when I assemble them.

Doing this under the time limit I have reminds me of a round from Iron Painter (even though I have yet to participate in one). Thanks for all the kind comments so far. I hope I'll have more pictures tomorrow or the next day.
All I know is I'm gonna get a really good night of sleep after this project is done. Then I'll be able to really focus on watching Season 2 of Dexter finally!

It's coming down to the wire now. Last night my intention was to finish up my last little nephilim and do the Mature nephilim as well. I got the little one done and all of the mature except one of his wings and his face, which I did tonight when I got home. Now I just have Lillith left to paint which I hope to do tonight completely. That will leave alll of tomorrow for painting the bases and diorama, and then adding some amateur lighting effects from the fire sources.
The pics of the mature nephilim aren't the best quality. The head on is slightly blurry, and the flash gave some pretty harsh lighting on it. You'll just have to take my word that it looks considerably better in person. Its not like I need top quality pics for a quick preview/update anyway. I'll probably get nicer pics of the whole project after its been given to my girlfriend and she can bring it back to my place for a photo shoot at a later date. Its a good thing its got that nifty little display/traveling case :)

And here is Lillith. Now I just have to painted the bases and diorama, which won't take nearly as long as the minis did (hopefully). I'll try to take some decent quality pics when it is all done, but most of them I'm doing aren't turning out the best (harsh lighting as a result of quick pics.

Just got the diorama and the bases done. It was just simple dry brushing for the lack of time available, but I still think the details and blending worked well enough. All I have to do now is paint the flames and do some amateur blue light sourcing on the whole thing. I've still got a while before I need to hit the sack, so I think I'll be fine on time.
