DING DING!!
Hello paintfans, it's been an exciting season of Iron Painter, but it ain't over yet!
We've reached the FINALE, the big Climax!!
In this corner we have the master of scratchbuild, the rat loving French phenom...
MOAVOAMOATU!!
Staring intently from across the ring is the Minnesota Mayhem, the FFG Guru, the terror of terrain...
BEXLEY!!!
But wait!!! We've got more corners in the triangle of Terror!
From the old Blighty, the smackey of the smack talkers the Proud Pappa, and the darkhorse
DARKLORD!!!
Three men enter, only one man will leave! And he will be the IRON PAINTER CHAMPION!
The theme, keeping our musical theme within the theme:
BEAST OF BURDEN
How you interpret that is completely up to you...as always its about pleasing the judges!
DEADLINE IS 6pm CST
JULY 20th
Will Bexley be the first male Iron Painter?
Will Moavoamoatu convince that rat of his to help?
Will Darklord continue to surprise us all?
All this and more will be answered in this the final round of the 5th season of Iron Painter.
Which begins....
NOW!!!
Moavoamoatu

Thanks Supervike that was fast and I already have my idea.....it's a long story.
Good luck mates.
Remember Bexley, you will have to show us your face and leave the mask if you win.
If I win I will tell you what my stupid name means.....another long story.

Heh. Are you insinuating that if Moavoamoatu or Darklord won, we wouldn't have a male winner?

I think I know what I'm going to do. Probably. I have to look at it when I get home. I suspect it might just be too much to do in two weeks, though.

Same for me as it would represent 8 to 10 miniatures to paint. But I'll give it a try. Only one miniature is missing.....

i have two ideas so far for this, both involve converting/sculpting, one a serious entry the other a comic one so do i go with comedy thats sneaked me in this far or do i what i always set out to do each round and push my skills with a normal piece?
either way you'll be pleased to know neither involves greenskins!!
Moavoamoatu
07-04-2008, 04:17 AM
No Greenskins ??? Such a shame...I'll paint greenskins for you :D
Bexley

So, if I win, I post a picture of my face. Moavoamoatu has to explain his name.

oh and be warned guys, this could well be my best ever entry!!
Moavoamoatu
07-06-2008, 01:48 PM
Still working on my entry : I already painted 2 out of 10 miniatures but no conversion or scratchbuilt this time. In fact it's a project I had since ages and it's coming to life for the final round.
I don't know if I'll have enough time to post an entry in Total Testosterone (I had 3 projects for this contest).

I mainly use old Citadel miniatures from the early 90s for this entry. I wanted to make a diorama with these miniatures but had no time or opportunity to do it before.
To be honest I really don't know if I'll have time for my TT entry as it involves not less than 10 miniatures for one entry and 6 for the other one (I just forget the third one). So it means painting 10+10+6 = 26 miniatures with painting contest standards in less than 2 weeks !!!!! If it was for a wargame it would not take much time. My wife found it better to go shopping with her yesterday, to invite my sister in law today and to invite friends next week. I just don't speak about my job. So I don't know if I'll find enough time to paint 26 miniatures in 2 weeks and IP is the priority.
BTW if I can't post in time for TT I will post in the miniatures showcase, just for fun.

Well the weather's been useless for getting my 'I think..' entry primed and now I've just spent the evening down the hospital with my daughter - broken wrist scheduled for fixing Wednesday. Hold the front page, just had a call saying the consultant doesn't like the X-ray and wants to operate tommorrow. Oh well it's an almost certain dnf for me, probably won't get time for TT either now. :disappoin
Moavoamoatu
07-14-2008, 06:24 PM
The most important is not having an IP or TT entry but that your daughter feels better. I really hope all will be fine for her.
You know I planned to get an entry in each TT contest category but I don't even know if I could even post one. That's not important. Health and family are far more important.
Good luck for your daughter.
And BTW you still have Rotten harvest and Femme fatale.

I just finished my 11th miniature for the final diorama....need to paint the base now and begin my TT entry.
waghorn - I'm really sorry to hear about your daughter and I hope they're able to make the repair as painlessly and successfully as possible.
I've just spent a few weeks waiting for weather decent enough to prime some minis for Gen Con Paint n Take and finally had a window of let's call it good enough weather Saturday morning. Normally I use brush primer and sealer cause I got fed up of waiting for perfect weather or gassing myself in the garage, so you might want to look into that to have for backup? Though along with the GC minis I had one thing to spray prime for myself. It had a kind of plastic on it that just repelled the brush primer. But that's the first time I've had that happen, and it was not a usual metal or resin part.
Darklord
07-15-2008, 12:16 PM
hope she's doing ok waghorn, send our best to her.
as for my entry i have only spent maybe an hour on it in the last 5 days what with visitors, babies and hard landscapiing. just adding my usual smack talk to the base but still got tons to do and will be pushing to finish
Moavoamoatu
07-15-2008, 01:20 PM
I am almost done !!!! Just glue the miniatures on the base, take photos and I'll post it ASAP.
I was also "bugged" these last days and Ritual will be happy : we drove with my wife's Volvo to IKEA to buy furnitures for my daughter :D I spent 2 hours building this fucking furniture instead of my IP diorama...and my wife find it funny to invite friends at home too....a real nightmare for my TT entry. I wanted to post in each category but it might be in one only if my wife doesn't want to go shopping for sales or invites friends or ask me to do some household or garden duties....I cross my fingers...that's life ;)

Moa- calm down man! I hate to say "It's only a painting competition", but it is. :) If I let myself get that worked up over every entry I did or wanted to do, I'd have lost my mind years ago (though it could be argued that I didn't have much of one to begin with!). No worries friend over what you can post - you're still a great addition to the forum!:D

Not really sure- I don't have medical insurance. I needed to make dozens and dozens of small weights to glue foam to tables at work. I got the bright idea of putting concrete into plastic cups- concrete is cheap, and weighs enough for what I was doing. But I had no mixer, so I had to hand mix it small batches. If you've ever hand mixed concrete, it's no easy task- imagine trying to stir about 16 oz. of water into a gallon of sand and pebbles. My arm was sore afterward, but that seemed normal, given how much work I had done. But this was a few weeks ago, and it is still sore. My guess is that I just strained a muscle, but because of the kinds of things I do at work, like painting and stirring and sanding and nailing, it's not getting a chance to rest and heal. It's gotten really bad ove rthe last few days, though. I actually couldn't paint yesterday because I couldn't bend my arm. I can bend it today, but it's very stiff and painful. I'd take some painkillers that I have leftover from some dental work, but they make me a bit loopy, and I don't want to wake up tomorrow and find red orcs with tie-dyed shirts standing in purple grass.
Bexley
07-19-2008, 09:02 PM
My biggest concern now is this storm knocking out my power, forcing me to paint in pain and by candle light.
Moavoamoatu
07-19-2008, 09:14 PM
I had exactly the same on my arm once : it's like a "tennis elbow" (I don't know the english medical term) and apart eating painkillers and having rest you can't do anything. It lasted about 3 or 4 weeks. I know it's painful and you can't do anything. Even using a keyboard becomes a nightmare.

ligaments dear boy ligaments... starts of slightly irritating, becomes slightly annoying , get's down right painful and can be potentially crippling.....
real pain in the butt and as you say your usual routine won't help it mend .. small repetitive movements.. a lesson to all us busy painters and modelers. a small set of weights can do wonders .. just break every so often and do a few curls... or at the very least stretch regularly.... fingers crossed for you that it wo't impact your work too much....

Bexley, it sounds like you could have a muscle inflammation. You get that from putting a lengthy and unnatural strain on some muscle in your body. It is very painful, but it won't have lasting effects. It can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications.

Sorry for not being up here lately, and I sad to hear about your arm Bexley. I can sympathize a little. I managed to get one TT entry up, but not before I caught my thumb on my painting hand in a drawer. Now I'm stuck with a slightly crooked and bruised appendage with a constant ache.

That's why I posted my entry as soon as I could to avoid problems such as internet connection, injuries,....the most dangerous is when you use a knife to cut foam or polystyrene to make a diorama.
Now I know why your entry is painted in red Darklord ;)

Bexley is injured, you are injured too...don't you try to influence the judges by whining ???? If yes, I'll do the same.
In fact I am an orphan. My too legs were broken when a piano fell on me from the 5th floor. Last week, a pitbull ate my left arm and 3 days ago I burnt my right hand fingers in a toaster. Please consider that I had to finish my entry in difficult conditions. I painted the last miniatures with my mouth but it was not easy as I broke 3 of my teeth when I fell from my armchair. And taking the picture was horrible : I had to press my camera button with my left ear. So, please, judges, be nice with me... :D
Just kidding guys ;) and still looking forward to see your entries.

Ugh. I made sure to leave time to take pictures, but I didn't have a backdrop big enough. So I had to run out and buy some posterboard, thus eating up my photography time. Of course, lighting a large piece is different than a small one (which is what I'm used to) and so once again, I'm not happy with my photos. I also didn't include many close-ups in my collage, which was a goof on my part. I think that tomorrow I will mess around and take better pictures for myself, and maybe post them here too.

for IronPainter, each round has a theme, (kind of like Iron Chef which its basd on) that theme, is what the overall composition is to be based on.
So for this last round it was "beast of burden" how the theme is interpreted is completely up to the painter.

"Beast of Burden" is a figure of speech. If you interpret it litterally you'll have a beast of some sort carrying something heavy (in this sense, burden = heavy weight). Of course, you can interpret the saying in more metaphorical ways where "burden" could relate to something different, like a difficult decision, feelings of guilt or something similar. But, it seems the contestants this round chose the more litteral interpretation.

I know your pain. I'm bringing mine to work tomorrow (er... I suppose that "later today" is more correct, as I went to bed shortly after my entry was posted, woke up at about 11pm, and can't get back to sleep) to take some better pictures.
I think that while I await Rotten Harvest (I didn't expect to get this far in IP, and it ate up too much time for me to get an entry for GenCon) I am going to build a permanent photo booth and work out all the kinks for taking both single-figure pictures and larger dioramas, so when I'm up against a deadline I can just set up and take pictures and not have to worry about it. Plus, with a permanent setup, I can take WIP pics with less hassle.

I did some smack talk these last days as I wanted to have fun and I was impatient to see other entries but now it's time for sincerity.
I have nothing to lose either as I didn't expect to go to the final when I began the IP contest. I browsed the past IP galleries and I thought it would be a real challenge to go further than round 2 or 3.
Now, I think we are all 3 of the same painting skill level, and we managed to beat better painters. I watched carefully at the entries and I think none is better than the other. We all do the same mistakes and we can't reach Demonherald, Ritual or EricJ painting level, who would smash us in a contest.
I won't comment about my entry as it is judges job or even yours mates.
Bexley, your entry is serious (not humoristic compared to Darklord entry) and the diorama is awesome. I really like the colours you chose too. May be could you tell us how you did it and how you manage to get such a realistic grass.
To be honest, when I saw your entry poping up 5 minutes before the deadline I said to myself : he is the winner. But considering all entries are different it's hard to say. Judges job once again.
Darklord, your entry is hilarious and I really love it too. You did an excellent job on it and I love your british sense of humour.
At least all of us respected the litteral theme.
Now we all 3 have problems taking pictures and we complain about it.
I bought a new camera (the last Canon one), 8 megapixels and a macro zoom up to 1 cm. It's an excellent camera but I am a poor photograph. I made a light tent to improve the shots but my last dioramas (entries) were too large to get in it.
Darklord, I have daylight bulbs but I find it better to use a halogen or normal bulb for photos, or if possible take photos in my garden, outside, by daylight.
My background sheet of paper was too small too so I used a white sheet which doesn't help without a light tent.
I still don't manage to use my camera properly and as Ritual (not sure) said for some miniatures, the pictures don't reveal the work of the painter as most of the tones don't appear on photos.
Well, just wait and see now but even if I don't win the first place I won something far better : new friends.

well to be honest Moa i think my painting standard is below that of you two and some others in the contest, but it just shows how far you can get utilising the theme aspect and a little luck! this is my second IP and i would have been happy to get further than last time into round 3, i never imagined for a million years i would get to the final!! This is probably one of the toughest competitions out there, yes there are GD's and stuff but the standard here is high especially when its done in two weeks, you have to go with a set theme (which are never easy ones!!) then do it all again.
I'm glad just to be in with such a great bunch of painters and getting feedback from even more great painters (judges included)

First off, don't sell yourself short in the painting arena, you are no slouch!
Second of all....that is what I love about how the Iron Painter has shaken out. It still is a painting contest, but creativity, and attention to theme can really make a huge difference. All three of you have excelled at creativity and theme, and it's why you are all here fighting for the glory!

You'll have to wait for the book.
Kidding! The ground is painted in mid-to-dark browns. The stones are imbedded in the ground, and dead branches are glued here and there. Then I gave the ground a coat thinned of matte medium (it makes a better glue, as it is less shiny than white glue and it's waterproof once it is dry) leaving small patches dry here and there. Over the wet medium, I put down a layer of forest scatter, which I make myself from "dyed" dried basil from the supermarket. Once that dries, I spray on another layer of matte medium to hold it all down. Then I apply spots of the matte medium to some of the bare spots, and add static grass. I use a 9-volt static grass applicator for that, which makes the grass stand on end. (Don't buy the one from Noch- it isn't very good, and costs $150 USD. Google around, a few model railroading sites have plans showing you how to build one for about $30 in parts, and it will work much better.) I first use 6mm grasses. Then go back to the patches you didn't cove rthe first time, and use 2-3mm grasses. After that is all dry, mist the whole piece with some water, and then spray on a final layer of matte medium to make sure everything is glued down. Once that is dried, birch catkins are glued down individually here and there. Most forest litter is partially decayed (or at least, curled up and shrivelled into unrecognizeable shapes) which the basil represents, and the catkins give the appearance of more freshly-fallen leaves.

I don't like light tents. The corners always seem to be in the way, and if I need to get the lights closer I am out of luck. I use paper diffusers over the lamps themselves, so I can position them any way I want and still get a diffuse light. The only real trick there is putting some opaque tape over the very center of the diffuser, which eliminates the "bright spot' from the center of the bulb from casting too much light in one spot. Just be sure you have non-yellowing paper, as the light shining on them yellows papers quickly, turning your diffusers into yellow colored gels, and will give your photos a yellow cast.

Thanks Bexley. I knew about tea leaves, not basil, it's a great idea.

I freely admit to being a really lousy iron painter! Yeah, I've never entered the competition, but I know anyway! I am too easily distracted by other ideas and, while being quite good under the pressure of a looming deadline, I wouldn't handle the repeated deadlines with hardly any pauses inbetween very well. Furthermore, I get obsessive about details and perfection when I paint, so I would drive myself crazy with not being able to call something done until I'd spent hours and hours touching stuff up. I expect I'd be able to paint a miniature in that timeframe, but I wouldn't have time left for the setting, not to mention additional miniatures.
I am simply not "iron"! Perhaps I'm more "silk" or "crystal", or something else that is fragile, pretty and expensive? :approve:
