View Full Version : Iron Painter V: Round 4

That's right paint fans!!
ONLY SIX REMAIN!
They come from all over the globe, refining their technique, cleaning the brushes. But eventually, we need to know, WHO IS THE MOST IRON????
I'm getting right to it, time is of the essence!
The Matchups, drawn randomly:
Moavoamoatu vs Morf
Ben$quig vs. Bexley
Brushmistress vs. Darklord
THESE ARE SOME SERIOUS PAINT-OFFS!
Right to the theme:
DIRTY LAUNDRY
I wanted to hand pick a theme that could go with the nasty ass flooding we've been getting. Plus it had to fit within the 'classic rock' pattern that has gone on (you didn't just think that was coincedence, did you?) PLUS, it had to be 'paintable'....So there you go.
Interpret it as you do....a stained cloak? A soiled headband? The choice is yours!
ONE LAST BIG THING TO TELL YOU....I've decided, since there are many things going on soon in my life to cut the contest down just a smidge;
SO, THERE WILL BE NO 'GIVE ME ANOTHER CHANCE' Winner this time around.
We will go to a three-for-all (we've done it before, its fun!)
That will cut out a round (and about 3 weeks of time)
So, this round is the SEMI FINAL ROUND!!!!!
The Deadline for this ROUND is
SUNDAY JUNE 29th at 6 PM CDT SHARP (and I mean SHARP this time...no more exceptions, I cannot take the pressure!)
Will Darklord continue to shock and awe?
Will Brushmistress complete the climb to the top?
Will Moavoamoatu forgive me for the 'Lady of the Brush' comment I made?
Will Morf survive his hangover? Who will survive the battle of M&M (morf and moa)?
Will, Bexley dominate again?
Will Ben$quig even get a mention here? (yes)
All this and much more will be decided on the next installment of everyones favorite painting contest...which begins;
NOW
OK, I woke up early (of course thanks to the hang over)... man, that is a theme. Who isn your drug dealer, Vike???
I should kindly remind that this is most likely Give me Another Chance round.

You know, if you'd prefer you can always hand off the moderating to someone else for a round if life has gotten too insane over there.

A three-way in the final? Vike likes to keep it kinky.

a threesome, shame there wont be a woman involved in that!!
theme is easy for me - new baby = lots of dirty laundry!!
Not to be bitchy, but this contest sees a plenty of rules changes in the time it's running.
Moavoamoatu

Will Moavoamoatu forgive me for the 'Lady of the Brush' comment I made?
Yes I will as you spelled my name correctly this time ;)
M&M battle : for sure : but which one has the nuts ?????
BTW I have both the idea and the miniatures this time....I just need time.

As far as I can see, this three-way scenario is the only change so far. The matter with Thunderhawker was a situation where we either had to be strict or indulgent, and we happened to be indulgent. No changes of rules there...

Not a bad thought...
but what would happen to my baby, if I hand it off?
Would the Iron Painter survive without me? (um...yes, yes it would)
Yes, and sorry about the last minute rule change.....there is much going on and I thought it would be beneficial to the Total Testosterone contest to end ours a smidge early.
In the season CDUKINO won, we hdid the Menage-au-iron for the final, and IMHO it worked very fine...i think its a fun twist. I do like to adhere to the rules, but realize that nothing can be set in stone.
It's ended up being pretty consistent so far, though that may not be by design. The first IP was a similar situation, where it ended with three so had a three-way bake off. The others have all gone 4-2. Admittedly it's not currently stated in the rules that the final round will be X number of painters depending on how many were in the preceding round, but I wouldn't be opposed to seeing that added.
Fun theme choice, I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with for that! I know the painters have been complaining about all the song themes, but as a lowly spectator this time I'm enjoying it quite a bit. :->
I'm fine either way.
I had this gory idea: picture the mom-ghoul and baby ghoul from Heresy. They're in the ghoul kitchen, body pieces strewn everywhere, something's cooking. There is a lots of laundry, and it's not clean at all!
I settled for something else, already doing it since next weeks will be very busy. 4-5 miniatures. Dang, lots of work.

I know the painters have been complaining about all the song themes, but as a lowly spectator this time I'm enjoying it quite a bit. :->
I liked the idea of a theme within the themes.
I have really done my best to make sure that the 'song' themes still make sense, paintwise. I for one would not be a stickler on the 'literal' interpretation of the themes, and prefer the more 'esoteric' ones...but I'm no judge, and we all know it's about pleasing the judges.
Also, I want to make sure Iron Painter gets enough twists to keep it fresh, without changing the entire overall feel of it.
Coming up with new themes hasn't been as easy as it sounds....
Darklord
06-14-2008, 03:04 PM
the themes are a pain in the ass, but even if the theme was a blue cat with yellow eyes sat on a toadstool we would still moan!! you do a great job vikey (as do the judges) and especially considering your circumstances at the moment. Vikey i salute you sir :adore:
and i have my first concrete idea and it could involve the greenskin family again!!, now for some back up ideas

Well Bexley, I'll see you on the kitchen floor! This is going to be great!
Vike, the themes are great because they are infuriating!
I do believe that with that crowd of painters, each round there will be at least a couple of entries that will make you go "Wow"!
Moavoamoatu
06-15-2008, 08:03 AM
My first idea fell on the ground and broke in 2 pieces : the miniature was beheaded...I would prefer a horror theme !!!! BTW I found another one which fits my idea. No goblins at all this time like last round.

Good luck everyone, I'm only a spectator but I'll put an entry in 'I think..' just to give you some light entertainment. Model tweaked, base half done - oh and it's a play on the words. Just love Iron Painter.
I did 2 out of 4 miniatures on Sat and Sun. I haven't followed all of the IPs but I'm planning on doing something nobody has done yet (I guess). Details - in two weeks ;)

Are you kidding me DL? With a baby you won't be sleeping at all which means plently of time to paint!!!
No, No, No Mad'am......as you don't sleep at all (when you have one baby...just imagine with twins) you are TIRED.....you fall asleep on your brushes.....drink gallons of coffee and shake like if there was an eartquake.
If you paint while you have a baby, there is a rule you have to respect : DON'T LET THE BABY DRINK PAINT....and don't paint with milk !!!!! :D
So you have 3 options to finish IP round 4 in time :
- ask the doctor if he can let the baby inside for one more week
- tell your wife when the baby comes : "it's not mine, look at him, he has huge ears !!!" and leave home for a week.
- ask your wife to get up at night to feed the monster while you paint.....and find a good lawyer for your divorce
- ask Supervike or Brushmistrees to take care of the baby
Good luck mate.

I tried to take photos tonight but they are too dark : a bit yellowish even if I control white balance both on my camera and with Photoshop or Picasa 2.
I use a brand new camera with a light tent (home made). I think my lamps (bulbs) are not powerful enough. So here comes the question : which bulbs do you use, how many Watts please ?
Thanks in advance.
Ritual

I use two 20W halogen lamps from the upper left and upper right and a 40W regular bulb from the upper front. All three of them are diffused by my lighting box and I set my automatic white balance to "light bulb" conditions, which makes the colours come out fairly accurately.

I have the same disposition but two 15W halogen lamps and two 40W regular bulbs.
I'll try by daylight to increase light.

Well, I know that. I mean, in the very first round. Like, if 43 people sign up for Iron Painter 6.
That happened in IP4 and a person was selected at random to be the "Wyrd Card". If I remember correctly, they would be paired up with anyone that had an opponent DNF (or randomly if there was more than one) or they would get a bye for the first round if no one DNF'd.
The Wyrd Card DNF'd.

A plea for leniency: I was resizing the photos to make a collage of views. The folder I was saving them to corrupted, and I did not have time to resize them before the deadline, so I quickly resized the front view and uploaded that, to make the deadline. Would it be possible to swap that photo for the collage I was intending to make? I fully understand if that's a no-no, and that it can't be changed after the deadline, but I figured it didn't hurt to ask.
Moavoamoatu
06-29-2008, 07:59 PM

Congratulations Bexley, you go to the final even if you don't post the other views.
But it would be great if you could post them even if you are sure to win now as the deadline is reached and Ben$quig DNFed.
This time the judges only have 4 entries to judge so it should be done fast, no ? But it will be hard because all 5 entries are of the same skill level IMHO.
Good luck to all and now judges it's your turn.

Well, Thunderhawker missed last round, and still got in. Depends on why Ben$quig DNF'd.
I will post more, shortly. I had just resized the last one, and was about to open a new file to C&P all the pictures into, and Photoshop just crashed. I loaded it up again, and went to the folder, and it crashed again. I looked at the clock, and decided to just upload the front view. Came to the site, went to the gallery to upload, and selected "browse for photo." As soon as I tried to navigate to the folder, Firefox crashed. I had to pull the photo off the camera, crop/resize it again, and quickly upload it.
On the plus side, having a CRT monitor makes a huge difference in color correcting, just like I had suspected.
Ritual
06-29-2008, 08:24 PM
Thunderhawker posted the entry in his own gallery as soon as whatever technical issue he'd had had got sorted, so it was fairly evident he HAD made his entry on time. If we don't hear from Ben$quig pretty soon, then he's definitely out.
EDIT: He was last active on the site on June 27, so he hasn't been here now trying to upload anything.

Here's the collage version (http://www.bexlarium.com/photos/2008/Laundry%28collage%29_IP5R4_LG_001.jpg) of mine.
Something is seriously wrong with my Photoshop. It continued crashing everytime I tried to "Save for Web." I quit trying, and started using "Save As..." and that worked for a bit, then that started crashing. Then it would crash when I'd try to paste. I finally managed to get the stupid thing put together. I'm going to have to uninstall/reinstall and hope that'll fix it.

Just an FYI...Since Bexley's opponent is a DNF and it doesn't impact anything, I'm going to allow Bex to upload his collage to the gallery.
I have no problem with this sort of thing, since no outcome will be affected, but also I'll take this chance to say that in the future, I'll not allow pictures to come in after the deadline, even for a 'good' reason. I did that last round, and took alot of (deserved) heat for it.
In the future, I will just expect everyone to allow time to get the pics uploaded. If there is a worry about Wyrd being down, I'll have folks e-mail the pics to me by the deadline. If you have problems with your internet connection, it's up to you to get to a connection that does work. I hate to sound cold blooded, but I worry if I have made exceptions in the past, everyone will expect them...and I don't want to be the person that says 'your reason isn't good enough'.
So, going forward, if there are any more IPs, the deadline is going to be strictly adhered to.
Danke!

Agreed. In fact, I'm on record saying that last round. I only asked because a) I did have all my photos done on time and b) I had a working internet connection. I mean, seriously- who expects Photoshop to go bonkers? But, I also expected the answer to be "no". Since Ben$quig DNF'd, though, it doesn't much matter, except that I will still get judged, and since the feedback and scoring are valuable in and of themselves, I'd rather get that feedback on the multiple views.
How did you make the buckets ?
It was a wooden barrel mini (I think from Rackham) that I cut in half. I used a Dremel to hollow out about a 1/16" out of the half I used for the tub.

I'll most likely make the new theme and announcement by FRIDAY morning.
Maybe, if I get the results in, I can make the announcement slightly earlier, and give the finalists an extra day or two on this end of it. What say you forum folks?
Bexley
06-30-2008, 03:43 PM
You've announced the scores and new theme early in the past, when the judges have gotten their scores in early. I had an idea if Nathan agrees : some companies give the winners of painting contest a kind of miniature reward. Black Scorpion has the Chief. I recently bought in a shop (you can't find it on the web) a Gamezone miniature representing a painter and also a miniature with a dice in his hands.

Thank you DL :o:
The photo is s**t but in the metal she's come out quite well, just wish I could sort it so you could see.
I think my 'Bad to the bone' was better though - apart from the dragon toppling as I took the photo!
Oh well, roll on the next round.

Hey folks, just chiming in as I finally have gotten around to reading the last few days of posts here though I've jumped in on one or two threads here and there. And yes, I'm working on PM's and e-mails, constantly.
:)
Trophy, that has actually been on the list for some time now and IS something that we're going to get done, just it is a matter deciding what, in what venue (whether we offer an honest to goodness trophy or a contest only miniature) and putting aside the funds. Having something sculpted up, molds made and cast is a spendy operation so essentially it would be funds that won't be recouped in any fashion other than self satisfaction of seeing folks having a good time and getting rewarded with other than miniatures from the Wyrd line.
Still, something that we want to do, and will do, just have to allot for it here in the future, and right now every spare penny (and a few we don't have) is going into new sculpts, upgrades behind the scenes and getting ready for GenCon which is a real bugger (and expensive to boot!). We'll manage, just give us a bit more time on that.
As for Eric and Rob being delayed on the votes, my apologies there. I kicked things into over gear here on a few things that I've got them working on behind the scenes and put a firm deadline on it all and pulled out the Ogre Nathan and they've been sports and obligingly been losing sleep in order to get some Wyrd product painted, tutorials put together, and slap together the latest version of Wyrd Chronicles which I've been stomping on about.
Lastly, just wanted to say that the entries are all top notch and I don't envy the judges one damn bit. Typically this is the point in the contest where I wuss out and give top scores across the board just so I don't have to be the bad guy, glad I fobbed that off on someone else this time about (heh).

Instead of sending a mini/$5 to the person who beat you, just have eliminated painters in IP send $5 to the Trophy Miniature Fund.
Hey, speaking of which- since the final is 3-way, do I have to send two figures if I lose, or just one to the highest scorer?

I'm all for it.
Very good idea.
It would take at least 200 losers to get it going ;)

sounds like a good idea to me too. @ Nathan, i dont speak for others but i know they are all a good bunch and i think most of us take part for the enjoyment it gives, its certainly unlike any other contest i have entered and appreciate you letting us hold it on here. Might as well say too that vikey and the judges do a real sterling effort to keep the thing running, especially when we are all bugging them for scores!!
Oh and i hope i got your posing pouch the right colour!!

Yes, sending money for the Trophy Miniature Fund is a real good idea.
And I think it must be a Supervike's avatar Trophy miniature.
If I have time, I'll try to do something for the final round even if I don't go to it. I sure you will like it. I have the miniatures, I just need time as I started my TT entry today.
@Jim : if Rob posts his results today can we have the results and the new theme today instead of friday ?

Posing pouch was hilarious. :D
And yeah Morf, you got the cost of it down quite nicely, thus the reason why it isn't an immediate jump upon. Still, thanks folks for the offers, no need to donate money in the least, just something that we'll manage here sooner or later.

would adapting one of your exsisting mini's be cheaper. i know there is still mould casting etc but would save the need for a new sculpt

FF: I didn't think it would pay for the figures, but it'd at least help out.
Supervike: Well, yeah, but we can always hope that the scores will be in early. I mean, it happened once, therefore we will always expect it to happen and cry when it doesn't. That's how gamers work. Haven't you read this (http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/commentary/alttext/2008/06/alttext_0618/)?
I think the donating of the losing fee to Wyrd or having a small (optional) entry fee would be fine ideas to help fund the trophy. It's a community project, seems reasonable for the community that participates to contribute to it. Nathan's already been very generous in supplying the bandwidth and not minding that we paint other companies stuff and so on.
