ACTUAL BALLOTS:
Ritual:
My votes and comments!
Morf
theme: 4.5
technique: 4
overall: 8
comment: A nice scene, clever idea and fairly good execution (not to mention, quick!!). The painting and construction of the characters are of a higher level than the tower and stairs, which do feel a bit rushed.
ThunderhawkerMinis
theme: 4
technique: 4.5
overall: 8.5
comment: Nicely done and very atmospheric! One thing that bothers me is that the front view suggests that the back side of the termie ought to be much darker than it is. When you see the rear view it looks like he's standing in regular daylight. You should paint it much darker as the rest of the scene doesn't indicate much in the way of other light sources. Also, I think the scene would benefit from a visible target for the attack! Some of the transitions on the armour is a bit abrupt too.
moavoamoatu
theme: 5
technique: 4.5
overall: 9
comment: Very cool, very clever and very nicely done! I love the sort of obvious anachronism of the lighter!
Brushmistress
theme: 4
technique: 5
overall: 9
comment: Excellent! Very nice looking vignette and a top notch execution!
Ben$quig
theme: 5
technique: 4
overall: 9.5
comment: A really cool and original idea! The execution is very high-level too. I think the colours on the beach babe part of the vignette looks a bit dull, though. The skin would look better if it was more golden, and the entire scene would benefit from a more sun-kissed look. Easier said than done, perhaps, but... I must nag at something! ;)
Darklord
theme: 3.5
technique: 3
overall: 6
comment: First of all, kudos to you for trying out sculpting your entry from scratch entirely! While there is definitely room for improvement, I would still say that it's a good first effort. The miniature itself is not bad at all. The bed sheets look more like mud, but that's got a lot to do with the painting as well. I would like to have seen the whole thing placed on a base of some sort to get a tidier framing of the whole thing.
HamishMcGreigh
theme: 3
technique: 3.5
overall: 6.5
comment: A nice, solid paint job! I would try to work with picking out and defining the detail of the armour a bit more. Work with fine, deeper shading and sharper highlights along edges of things.
alizardincrimson
theme: 4
technique: 4
overall: 7.5
comment: Clever theme interpretation if not a bit too clever. It takes a while to work out the references, and if you're not familiar with The Doors you won't get it at all! I did, however! :)
Paintingploddy
theme: 3
technique: 3.5
overall: 7.5
comment: A solid paint job, altogether. I would like to have seen a brighter flame to make it more eye catching. Also, the metals on the jack could use more depth and definition.
wargriffon
theme: 3
technique: 3.5
overall: 7
comment: A pretty nice paintjob, but I think the skin could use a bit more depth, especially seeing as it's so much of it. It looks like the shadows are more lines than actual shadows. Also, you should try to hide the joint between the two layers of cork tile so that it's not as obvious.
JakubT
theme: 2.5
technique: 4
overall: 7.5
comment: I really didn't get the theme interpretation here. I could see that something was giving off a blue light, but I couldn't be sure what. The reflections seem to be a bit randomly placed so it's hard to see where the light should be coming from. Also, the light at the gun doesn't really look like light, which doesn't help. The rest of the mini is really well painted, though.
LavronYor
theme: 4
technique: 4
overall: 8
comment: Nicely done! A well executed and readable scene!
Lukan Sanath
theme: 3.5
technique: 4
overall: 7.5
comment: A nice scene with a very powerful looking mini! The flames are well done! I think, perhaps, that you could have made some reflections on the lower part of the mini. Also, some deeper shading underneath the blue sash at the front wouldn't be amiss. Something to consider if you want to make OSL reflections is to make sure the light reflections are LIGHTER than whatever the object would be otherwise, and not just coloured differently due to the colour of the light.
Hinton
theme: 4
technique: 3.5
overall: 7.5
comment: A good theme interpretation! I'm also happy to see you get it done, despite having lack of time. Good work!
Commander Y
theme: 3
technique: 4.5
overall: 8
comment: A very well painted piece, as expected from you! You didn't get a high theme score from me, though, as you more or less just picked a suitable mini and painted it straight up. I really like how you painted the fire.
Thryth
theme: 3
technique: 3.5
overall: 7
comment: Good looking paint job! I think the light reflections on the base look really nice and the colour of it looks pretty much as I would expect. The fire itself would benefit from being brighter and I am also a bit bothered by the sharp edge between fire and decking with shadow and all... It would look better if the fire blended more seamlessly into the floor boards.
v22TTC
theme: 2
technique: 2
overall: 4
comment: I admit to scoring your entry rather randomly, as I really didn't know what scores to give out. It's too far from finished to read the scene properly and too much unpainted areas to judge the quality. It does look ambitious and I would love to see it finished some time. Sorry!
Bexley
theme: 5
technique: 4
overall: 9.5
comment: A great idea and very ambitious too! Great execution as well! I would have liked to see a little bit more work on the grilled goblin. If you had differentiated the different areas just a little bit, so you could see for instance that some areas are metallic and so on. But, great work on this, nevertheless! I'm surprised you can paint a DRAGON(!!) in two weeks but get defeated by a bit of filigree! :P ;)
waghorn41
theme: 3.5
technique: 3
overall: 6.5
comment: I'm not sure whether or not to score this entry, seeing as it is not posted in the correct place. But I will let it pass. I will, however disregard from the additional shots as they were posted after the deadline and not in the competition gallery at all. A pretty good paint job and I like the conversion of the sorceress as I really HATE the staff she carries originally. The silver on the head dress and a few other places could use more depth and I lack a bit of definition between clothes and skin. If you could make some dark lines there it would help the mini to look neater and the different areas would be better defined.

Just laughed my ass of at this one.. That charred goblin is still giving me his charred shocked look even after closing the pic. A little bit more time on this would have been first class in particular just making the mallow holding goblin feel a bit more part of the scene... overall though great great piece and very ambitious in the timeframe .(I’ve done that dragon before it aint no walk in the park)

Man it is a real shame this one didn’t get finished and I hope for one that you do get round to finishing… you still get marks for effort and a five overall as I can really see how good this was going to be..The idea of the two burning aspect demigods struggling to light the fire is fantastic..The modelling looks great and well…just finish the bugger…

I think this would have benefitted from the flame being a different colour.. I had trouble reading the scene at first until I read your description. Flames are a bugger to sculpt so Kudos there and overall a solid piece.

No brainer for the choice of model go trolls…without a doubt the best part is that fireball and so it should be for the theme.. to be a picky bugger the light sources could be a bit better .. The inside of the mouth where that dark red is showing could do with been the same as the brighter part of the flame.. The eyes maybe picking up some of the colour and the parts where the flames touch the fingers just a shade or two lighter but that is being picky and overall it’s a great looking piece.. nice one.

I really like what you have done here.. Great take on the theme I can actually picture a silent film speech caption coming up reading “Igor light it up” ….considering the real life time constraints I think you’ve pulled off a pretty darm cool diorama. Kudos.

Awww man a darker background for the pic and a little touch of orange OS here and there on the robes and this would rock.. Very interesting and convincing idea for the flames..great work..

Great job and a funny scene there really is some firelighting going on there…I think the whole piece could benefit from some slightly warmer glazes used in the flame as it moves from the source and especially on the ground where the bright spots make it a bit busy but overall a great theme piece.well done..(pun intended)

It’s a shame you couldn’t figure out how to put a compilation shot as more angles would have helped.. have a read of the tut’s in the articles section.. The whole piece would benefit from some work on shading especially the metallics but still Kudos on finishing and definitely an interesting idea..but remember next time multiple shots..bobies are acceptable bribes..;-)

I think your right on the blue on blue not being the best idea.. The osl is kinda lost with the blue of the model but is really well done on the face.. Needs to be a bit brighter at the source and not as saturating but again this could be in part to the blue on blue.

Nice play on the theme and some good paint.. The barbarian flesh looks great.. the pants could maybe do with a little bit of glazing to smooth the drybrush effect out.. A few points on the female could do with highlighting a bit more as her flesh is a little lacking compared to the big guy but overall a nice job on a not too easy model..and you get a boobie bonus..woo hoo..

Great job. Excellent work within the self imposed basing constraints proving dioramas don’t have to be big to have lots of character. Great choice of models and the positioning and basework are all awesome.. I’m struggling to read the painting a bit because of the white background..(I’m a touch light sensitive at the moment) but overall I really feel this piece.

Okay I’ll admit to thinking WTF at first.…so I did have a little research on it and redid my scores. So kudos for making me learn something…I think the elements that you have gone for have been done well and it is a clever take on the theme.. ( I did wonder wether anyone would do the Jim Morrison take) The painting could do with a little contrast here and there but all in all makes for a nice entry and a theme that made me think…

Very very clever work my friend. Love what you have attempted and understand the difficulties photographing would cause. The painting is solid and the two contrasting elements work fantastically.. The bit in the middle is spoiling it.. I can understand you have covered the bases painting the flame effect but I can’t help thinking it would have worked better plain black or maybe as a written note back to his beloved thanking her for the photo but overall really like it.

Man that looks hot.. definitely up there with your best work and for a rush job double tipping of the hat to you.. I'm really curious to see the score breakdown.
Since I feel like I pulled off something much better theme wise and painting wise and yet score less?
My partner in crime does a great job in theme, much better in painting than previous round and she gets less than round 1?
I feel like we've both avoided making a write up of a story (on picture one you can see the X doing this and that and that should remind you of a story described in here and there), that might have hurt us.
Curious to see the breakdown, I am not bitter, just surprised.

For those of you who compare your scores with previous rounds I will say this: It's hard enough to give out scores that are conistent for all entries in the current round. If I was to look at previous rounds and compare the entries with all entries from previous rounds as well it would take ages to finish the voting. So, the scores are relative to each other for all the entries of ONE particular round. In other words, don't weigh too much into comparing the scores between rounds!
Congratulations to all the winners! Well done!

Judges: Cheers for not savaging me - and not giving me sympathy points either. When people I know were asking me what score I thought I'd get, I said, "24... well nothing higher than that - say 22, plus or minus 2." Fair dos!
Commander Y: Congrats! Hamster and rickshaw in correct order and all's right with the world... you know the drill. Good luck next round too.
Thunderhawkerminis: Not wanting to add to the pressure but getting through with another chance, I found to be a bit of a headwrecker... I knew with a week to go that I'd been put irrecoverably behind but still kept slogging away because it would have seemed unfair to the next highest non-winner of the previous Round if I hadn't.... Funny situation to be in.

Thank you judges, and thanks Wargriffin - the vagaries of photography are beyond me as well. Look forward to seeing you at the next Iron Painter where i expect you'll be the one who triumphs.

Aye indeed - thanks to all the judges, even those who made us wait so long. I need to take some better photos when I get home of the back of mine. Everyone thinks its so light, when in point of fact its just that I suck at photoshop.

Mmmm. I knew that I had problems with my entry this round.
BTW, I think that I have the honor of being one of the lowest scorers this round, instead of JakubT.
@Judges Thank's for your time and effort. I appreciate the help for improving my painting skills.
@Morf I am usually disappointed in my score for theme in IP in general (except for Skya's scoring). It's difficult (at least for me) to try to guess what will impress the judges, I just keep trying. :) I usually agree with the rest of the scoring, though, so it might just be me. :)
Heh, I think I've got a rather different perspective going into judging though. I personally would probably have given Morf a quite high theme score, but knocked him down some on overall. While theme wise it was great, I'd not have gotten it out without having it explained to me and to me how well what you're trying to do comes across is all about the overall perception of the piece. Mind you, I'm all for subtle themes and odd and interesting twists, and Morf has definitely popped up with an occasion favorite of mine in the past.

Maybe I will, just been rummaging and found a nice little grouping for 'bad to the bone'. Hmm, very tempting to keep the fun going. And this is one that I hadn't thought of but just came to me when I saw the title and realised I had the minis.

I might end up being a big hypocrite, coz I honestly can't think of anything... well, except for one idea which would involve ordering a mini from the States and sooooo much sculpting... not again!
Dunno, might just paint a mini, sort of related, as a place holder and hope I get more inspired next Round....
Be nice for Duende to have some company though! :)

Morf for my part it wasn't so much looking for the obvious play on the theme but that little extra that would have finished the scene and at the same time play a bit more with the theme.. hope that makes sense and anyone not sure on what my comments mean then please feel free to PM me...
I agree with Ritual on the not looking at last rounds or previous just looking at the particular entries. It's a tricky old job with such a diversity of ideas and styles and trying to keep it all fair is a real bugger...I suppose half the problem with some themes for judging is that an idea or two will pop into my head and then I can't help but look for some of that..
anyways hope no one is too upset....
