Now...just so you know, I am human. I think I got everything right, but if not, call me on it. I'll fix it right away. These results become official as soon as the next round is announced, so let me know right away! We are right on schedule, so I'll most likely announce the new matchups and Theme on Friday.

If all holds up, we will be invoking the GIMME ANOTHER CHANCE ruling and that is looking like v22TTC...

I'll have a scoring breakdown and some fun stuff as soon as I get a chance.

Thanks all!

Here are the actual ballots

theme: 4
technique: 3
overall: 6
comment: A very creative idea, as we've come to expect from you in this competition. The mini itslef looks good, but the grand piano lets this down. I don't like the finish of it and it drags the impression down a bit.

jed
theme: 4
technique: 3.5
overall: 7.5
comment: Clever theme idea, although without the comment it gets kind of lost on those that aren't that into sports. Nice clean paintjob, but it lacks a bit of depth in the shaded areas.

steelcult
theme: 3
techinque: 2.5
overall: 6
comment: Perhaps you should have included more views and some individual shots for closer view? Looks like a solid job overall. The biggest improvement would be to go deeper with the shading.

v22TTC
theme: 4
technique: 3
overall: 7
comment: Imaginative theme interpretation! Painting looks a bit chalky and you could have had an increased effect by deeper shading (starting to sound like a parrot here... ;)).

ben$quig
theme: 4.5
technique: 3.5
overall: 8
comment: Well done on the theme interpretation, both using lots of blue and using the "blues" as a part of the composition. Technique wise, there's plenty of areas that could do with smoother blending, but the end result is nevertheless very striking.

Grinning Buddha
theme: 4
technique: 3
overall: 6.5
comment: Haha! This made me laugh! Good conversion. A solid paintjob, but work more with smoothness. Both when it comes to blending and getting the coats of paint smooth on the surface.

350kilotons
theme: 3.5
technique: 3
overall: 7
comment: A nice looking mini and kudos to you for pushing yourself by trying out a new method (NMM). You should be pleased with this first attempt at it, as it looks fairly good. More camera angles would have been nice.

wargriffon
theme: 3.5
technique: 3.5
overall: 7.5
comment: A very clean, neat looking paintjob. I like the freehand and the composition. The face is very well done too. The biggest drawback here is the lack of depth. Shading needs to go deeper and highlights need to go higher. Some areas become a little unclear due to this.

Brushmistress
theme: 5
technique: 4
overall: 9
comment: Clever to get the crossroads reference in here! Well done all over. I do feel that you could be a bit bolder with the highlighting and get an even more striking result.

stubbdog
theme: 3.5
technique: 3
overall: 6.5
comment: I like the hair the best here. The high contrast between light and dark makes it really shiny. Other parts of this suffer from rough blendings and some blotchiness (legs and back of the guitar mostly). Work on smoothness and you'll do truly striking pieces.

Duende
theme: 3.5
technique: 3.5
overall: 6.5
comment: This is a good looking group. They probably look better together than each one individually, as the composition with different blues make up for some of the weaknesses the paintjobs have. I'm mainly referring to rough blending herre. I like the way the swords are painted. The base is a bit of a drawback. Some further detailing would make a big difference.

Przemas
theme: 3
technique: 5
overall: 9
comment: Theme wise this is pretty weak as it only uses the colour, and it's not even that apparent as much of it looks grey. That being said, I love the mini! It's excellently painted and looks very, very striking.

LavronYor
theme: 3.5
technique: 3
overall: 6.5
comment: Fun idea! A bit roughly sculpted, but the design is very nice. The painting is also a bit on the rough side, but the end result still looks good.

tadme48
theme: 3
technique: 3.5
overall: 7
comment: very neatly painted with a clean and striking result. It does lack a bit of depth though, especially in the highlighting. The metals, in particular, needs both shading and highlighting to really come alive. The cloak, while looking good, would look even better if you pushed the highlighting further.

Commander Y
theme: 5
technique: 4.5
overall: 9
comment: Hahaha! I love this idea! And you've pulled it off beautifully!

orkydave
theme: 3.5
technique: 3
overall: 5
comment: A shame you didn't finish this one. It looks very promising. It's hard to judge the quality since many areas are unfinished.

thecadian
theme: 3
technique: 3.5
overall: 6.5
comment: A nice looking mini. It does look a bit unambitious for a competition entry, though. It looks well done, but a few more angles would have made it easier to see things, like the freehand on the shoulder pad.

HamishMcGreigh
theme: 3.5
technique: 3.5
overall: 8
comment: This is a very well designed scene. The interaction between the minis is great and the surroundings for a very coherent and fitting atmosphere. Painting wise, I'd recommend to work a bit on the blending and try to up your highlighting a bit.

Lukan Sanath
theme: 3.5
technique: 4
overall: 7.5
comment: I really like the atmosphere and lighting of this piece. I do think the photos look a bit weird and slightly green-ish.

ThunderhawkerMinis
theme: 5
technique: 4
overall: 8.5
comment: A really effective scene! Nice use of colours. Blendings could be a bit smoother and I don't like look of the rim of the base. There is also some inconsistencies in how things are highlighted. Take for instance the very bright strap going over his left shoulder with the very dark cloak beneath... It makes the strap look like it's glowing. But, this is still a very striking piece.

Paintingploddy
theme: 4
technique: 4
overall: 7.5
comment: Nicely done! Very neat. Perhaps you could make some of the edges between different parts a bit more defined, like between boots and knee pads. Some areas like those look a bit vague.

moavoamoatu
theme: 5
technique: 4.5
overall: 9
comment: A very ambitious project, and I'm frankly quite amazed at the speed at which you finished it. The quality of it is also impressive. And I love the fact that there are so many clever things incorporated in this scene. Maybe you could have made the pool of blue paint a bit better to further the look of wet paint. I think you should have made a slight shadow along the edges of it, for instance.

wingz
theme: 4
technique: 2.5
overall: 6
comment: Nice theme interpretation! Painting wise I feel this piece looks a bit flat. Some areas, at least in the photo, look like they only have a solid base coat. Also, the surface of the paint is a bit rough in places. Work a bit more with getting smooth coats of paint and push your highlighting and shading further. Take small steps so that you can feel comfortable with each improvement before going further.

alizardincrimson
theme: 3.5
technique: 4
overall: 8.5
comment: This is a beautiful piece! I like the conversion you've done here. And the paintjob is very fitting making this a very atmoshperic piece, despite its simplicity.

Morf
theme: 4
technique: 4.5
overall: 8.5
comment: Great work here! A blue blooded horror? I didn't know they had nobility among their ranks! ;) Very nicely done metallics here and I like the red.

JakubT
theme: 3
technique: 4.5
overall: 8
comment: This is a very striking mini. A bit weak theme wise, but a great looking piece.

matty1001
theme: 2.5
technique: 3.5
overall: 6.5
comment: Well, this is pretty far from your best work, and theme wise it's quite poor. Not a bad mini, but I know you can do a lot better. :/

Bexley
theme: 4.5
technique: 4
overall: 9
comment: I love this piece! It's very moody and the idea you've had with it comes out very strongly. You can push the shading and highlighting a bit further to make it more striking and I wish you had done something on the base around the big rock, instead of leaving that area empty.

Artemis Black
theme: 4
technique: 3
overall: 7
comment: Fun piece! A quite original theme interpretation, which I feel compelled to give an extra half point for (just for the unexpectedness of it). Technically, a bit rough, but definitely not bad. Maybe you should have put them on a singular, and bigger, base?

Coil
theme: 3
technique: 3
overall: 6
comment: The blue skin looks good. I think the darker bits are a bit difficult to read properly, but maybe that is a photography thing? The face looks a bit vague and I don't think the snow looks that good... But, it's a nice looking mini overall.

waghorn41
theme: 2
technique: 2
overall: 5
comment: I'm really not sure what the theme interpretation here is. There's a bit of blue on the horn, but that's it, as far as I can tell. The metals look a bit messy, and that affects the overall impression of the mini, I'm afraid. Try to work with smoother and thinner coats of paint and dull them down with heavily thinned paint. Do this repeatedly to shade them and then reapply thinned down metallic paint to highlight.

Dragonforge
theme: 4.5
technique: 4
overall: 8.5
comment: This is a very good example of how you can make something powerful out of a single mini and quite a small piece of surroundings. Very nicely designed piece. Execution is top notch too!

Thryth
theme: 3.5
technique: 4
overall: 8
comment: Good work here! I like the look of this. Cool to see someone having used one of the sewer bases too. One thing that bothers me slightly (very slightly) for some reason is that I think the colour of the inside of her cloak, on the side where she's holding the sword, looks abit oversaturated compared to the other blue areas visible in the front view. Makes my eye go there immediately instead of looking at her face or some other more important spot.

Darklord
theme: 3.5
technique: 4.5
overall: 8.5
comment: Very nicely done! A striking piece! Not much else to add...

Hinton
theme: 3
technique: 3
overall: 7
comment: Yeah, a bit poor theme wise... But it's a nice looking mini! The biggest drawback with it is the face. It looks a bit flat and featureless due to lacking depth of shading. You could also push the highlighting further on the metals and armour plates. The base is a bit uninspiring as well... ;)

Sculpta the squig
theme: 4
technique: 3.5
overall: 8
comment: A very nice piece and I really think you should be proud of it. Nice take on the theme and an effective way of composing the scene in a small area. Maybe Stalks should look down on his sinking friend? You can work more with smoothness, but you're doing well here.

Our Newest Guest Judge, Demonherald:

Well that was fun thank the Lord for DNF’s I say….;-) a quick explanation of my points breakdown as I’m sure some scores will raise a few eyebrows..Painting covers a maximum of 3 points on theme and 3 points on technique.. the extra 2 points are to be picked up for clever interpretations and extra modelling..no half points. This way it gives me a nice level field of play throughout where the stronger painters might get wrongfooted by a clever spin of theme…so
.theme out of 5 1-3pts for painting the colour blue depending on application
2pts for further expansion of theme

Technique out of 5 1-3 pts for paint
2pts for base and conversion

Overall out of 10…just a going with my ever expanding KFC filled gut..wow me.

In Rob's defense, he sent his ballot over in a WORD DOC via e-mail...so I think that wacked the formating a bit when I cut and pasted it in.

Those other two just use the PM feature....(which works well too.)

Anyhow, I sure hope some of the first timers who aren't advancing don't get put off. I'm really glad we had so many entries, and would love to see you all back again next time!!

Plus, you are all welcome to stay, place bets, goad the painters, point and laugh at my math skills, etc. etc.

Cheers judges (and Supervike for getting it sorted so quickly)... fair enough scores as far I'm concerned (apart from theme, generally, but nomatter :) ).

As I figured, CommanderY got the highest score (jointly with Moavoamoatu, which I'm delighted about, for Moavoamoatu's sake - 'twas deserved!).

Congrats Commander! Won't be shipping a mini to the States but if you want your $5 I'll send it off as soon as you pm me your PayPal details.

Ahhh, closure... but is it?

EDIT: Just read your post, that you wrote while I was writing mine, CommanderY - thank you very much! You're not so bad yourself!:) Be funny if I do get another chance and we're paired again... won't go so easy on you next time....;)

The HARDEST NAME TO SPELL AWARD

Moavoamoatu edges out LavronYor, but I still declare Vincegammer the winner!

Dr. Evilmonkie is weenie award

Dr. Evilmonkie, although he hasn't been around for ages, he seems to excell at that!!

my plan is working, do enough not to lose but not enough to cause headlines, lull my opponent into a false sense of security then WHAM, i'm through. Like the predator armed with a paint brush

Supervike, your scoring notes are hilarious.

Thanks to the judges : I honestly didn't expect such a score and such comments for my first IP contest. Now it will be harder to keep the level along with expert painters such as Commander Y and Brushmistress (and others too).

Thank you too to Brushmistress and V22TTC for their comments in this thread and many thanks to the others who encouraged me.

Congratulations to all the winners.

Many people were amazed because I posted my entry at the beginning. But I have a secret and I'll reveal it soon (as soon as I can take a photo) : don't worry I didn't cheat.

Well, to whomever my opponent may be in the next round, things aren't looking so good for me right now.

My full-time night driver up and quit on me without any notice at all (when I finally got a hold of him, he says it's because of some personal problems). So, until I hire a replacement for him - which could take weeks - I have to do my job AND his, which means working days and nights.

I'll try to have something entered, but I can't make any promises if it'll even be completely painted. Heck, it may be nothing more than primer (or undercoat or whatever people want to call it), but I won't DNF.

Is somebody having counting problems?

Just had a look at the judges scores/comments and our newest judge seems to have forgotten to add up...

Wargriffon Theme 3
Technique 3
Overall 5

Or am I reading the scoring wrong???

Well take comfort (if you can) in the fact that you were the 3rd highest scoring loser and that you'd have beaten several of the winners had you been paired up against them. And you got a nice looking mini to be proud of out of this! :)

That's definately something :) Just a bit sad to be bumped out in the first round again.

ROFL! lowest score and I still get through - there's no justice for you decent painters.
Hell I only entered for the fun and to make up the numbers. Perhaps out of decency I should dnf next round. But hey, what if my oponent dnf's! Guess I'll have to try and paint just to see if I can improve on my score.

To the judges, thanks. I just grabbed a half suitable mini out of my 'waiting to paint' backlog and set to work with basic GW paints. Truth is the mini is now the basis for an army sitting bare metal in blisters, no point in wasting anything.

Unless things have changed this round I think the scoring is ?/5 for theme, ?/5 for technique and then ?/10 for overall. The overall is a 'what would I score this mini from 1-10' vote, not adding the two other categories. So the highest possible from any one judge would be a score of 20, highest total possible score a score of 60.

No worries there! It is a bit confusing, as really the OVERALL is actually the "OVERALL AESTHETIC". Those are all combined to get the TOTAL (which is then compared to your opponent).

But the wording on that is confusing.

thats half the fun of Iron Painter, some excellent painters get paired together and go out others get through. Its good to have you in and dont DNF, you proved having iron by finishing, others didnt so your part way there, plus the competition is great for feedback from some really good painters and pushing yourself which will help you improve no end

Tomorrow? What if we can't wait?

Cmon vikey pm the theme, we wants it.....

yeah, last iron painter, the first round had the top two scores head to head, and the bottom 2 scores head to head, which meant the 2nd highest painter was eliminated, and the 2nd lowest painter won their battle (and advanced without a DNF). Hey, no where in the rules for IP does it state there is any justice in the competition!

Demonherald: As far as my scores are concerned, your scoring was pretty much exactly what I'd have given my entry - I think I'd have taken half a point off technique and put it in overall but the score would have been the same, so it's all good to me.

I think I lost sight of the golden rule: Keep your eye on the victory conditions! It is primarily a painting competition after all.... Though I was going a bit mental towards the end and didn't know if I was Arthur or Martha.... ;)

Now the scoring's in, there is one thing I was curious about which is why the gallery, in the thumbs, changed the end quotes of my title into `&...'. Didn't want to mention it before because it hardly mattered and I didn't want Nathan to feel he should have to take the time to sort it, but I'm a curious little catmonkey....

Have rethought the sending a mini/$5 thing too: it just seemed a bit ignominious (like putting the boot in), though of course there was never any chance that I wouldn't do that as a loser, as part of the competition, but I wouldn't have accepted it from anyone I defeated, as I mentioned a while ago.

Now I realise it's more an entry fee/stake, just paid in at the end, so it's all groovy. Anyroad, it occured to me, CommanderY, that your galleries are just swimming with 40K stuff and need more Infinity - from one Nomad to another how's about a nice catgirl Daktari for Sir?! I've got shedloads of them knocking about... so pm me your address and she'll be off over the Atlantic on a grand adventure! :)

I always thought the appropriate booty prize would be to give up the mini you competed with....

Kind of like racing for pink slips!! Vroom Vroom!

But, I understand why that doesn't happen...

I'll announce themes and matchups and that sort of thing tommorow!

Good job all you folks!

I think that would be more Tungsten Carbide Painter than Iron. This being my first finished piece, it'll always have a special place in my heart (though I wanted to stamp on it more than a few times...).

You'd just end up with huge disparities in model financial costs and shipping costs... and too many tears before bedtime....

Reet, well I'm off to the pub to put the groundwork in for that Anima 2D painting competition I've signed up for too [need some Guinness to top up my iron]... happy days! :)

hee hee ..it's allright it confised me first time round.. I kind of did the breakdown thing for paint and modelling/idea in the technique and theme sections and then the overall just an out of 10 score..gotta admit though it's a hell of a lot easier painting for this thing than judging it....

Justice? There is no justice in Iron Painter. I'm the one that paired up against demonherald and lost round 1 last time, though I had the second higherst score. :ridinghor

There can be REVENGE, however. :vb_devil:

Well done Stubdog, a great entry and no suprises you went through, have sent a PM for your address and best of luck for round 2. And well done to everyone else who managed to finish, and also those who advanced.

I can take some heart knowing that with a half finished entry the scores were much closer than I would have thought, and also I wasn't in the bottom 3 .
Ah well, sons health permitting there always Iron painter 6 to look forward to, not to mention the 'I think I can' !

Well done Mr Ploddy! My base coat and ink job wasn't ever going to match your painting regardless of how funky my conversion was; good luck with your next match up Sir!
