First off, so good to see all of you again, and I'd like to welcome the new faces as well.

Iron Painter is a very special type of painting contest, and it will test the mettle of all who compete, as well as the judges.

PLEASE, familiarize yourself with the rules located here:

http://wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?t=3224

To me, the rules are important, but not as much as the SPIRIT of the rules.

Let me also say that I cherish few other things more than fairness. I do my best to keep everyone happy, and I will try and be as fair as I can to all concerned. If problems arise, I'll deal with them in that regards.

We will have DNFers (Did Not Finish). I've no problem with that. This contest is grueling, and it is a bigger commitment than you may think.

BUT no more further ado....

The following are the matchups that were randomly chosen by RANDOM.ORG:

mcsneed vs. Darklord

Thryth vs. 350Kilotons

Wingz vs. Lukhan Sanath

Sculpta the Squig vs. HamishMcGreigh

Ringsnake vs. Ben$quig

Valmont vs. Morf

Matty1001 vs. wargriffon

Artemis Black vs. LavronYor

alizardincrimson vs. Thecadian

Moavoamoatu vs. tadme48

fieldarchy vs. Hinton

CommanderY vs. v22TTC

Paintingploddy vs. Grinning Buddha

JakubT vs. Coil

vincegamer vs. Bexley

Brushmistress vs. Jed

steelcult vs. Przemas

stubbdog vs. orkydave

Duende vs. ThunderhawkerMinis

Asmodai1973 vs. waghorn41

Dragonforge vs. CaffeineBoy

Study your opponents well!! But, remember, its all about pleasing the judges!

Theme is ultimately important, and has been the deciding factor in many of bouts!

SPeaking of THEME, Your theme for the First Round of the FIFTH Season of Iron Painter is:

"I GUESS THATS WHY THEY CALL IT THE BLUES"

Now how you interpret that theme is all up to you and your deviousness. Judges like to be wowed, so do your best. If you want to use all blue, have at it. Have another take on it...again have on it.

You have two weeks to do your best, the deadline is

SUNDAY APRIL 27 (my daughter Emily's 15th birthday!!) at 6 pm CDT (my time, same as Chicago time, look it up!)

No girl on girl action in this round, and the lovely ladies are outnumbered this time. It's never stopped them before, as we have had 4 straight Women victories. Can the men rise to the challenge?

Will VincegameR return with a vengeance after a long Wyrd layoff?

Will Bexely end up doing filagree?

How long until Laveryon Yor gets a misspelled name?

Has the spreadsheet tally sheet made Math calculations Easy on the vike?

Will a new face dominate this Season, or will it be an old hand?

All this and more will be decided by this Season of IRON PAINTER!!!

Which begins,

NOW!!!

Somehow I just knew that I was going to be matched-up against Meg in the first round.

Damn.

Good luck to everyone in the first round.

Who are our judges this time around? Same as IP4?

Now if I only had a miniature that looked like Elton John... :)

Cheers Dragonforge! Checked his FFIII entries and saw they were all PP, thinking, `Oh well, that'll be a Cygnar 'jack he'll be doing then...' then checked your link.... You know in a cartoon when someone opens a door and there's, like, some great big beast on the other side and they slam it quick!... Oops! Will go back for another peep in a minute... some nice blues going on there....

'Fraid I can't help you with your opponent's form in return (I'm kind of new to all this... kind of...).

v22TTC
04-11-2008, 01:21 AM
Well, I've only had one good idea so far but I can't imagine anyone makes such a mini... but my Muses never desert me!

Could be worse though - I could be up against a guy who won a Slayer Sword with a blue mini.... Have to confess that such awards don't impress me a hair but that is one fine mini! In fact, browsing his galleries, the one thing that constantly jumped out was how excellent his blues are.... Eek!

Might have to do an OrkyDave and get 15 out of 5 for theme or something....

Well, Veet (can I call you Veet?) - you have the advantage. At least you can peer through my galleries - I have no idea who you are. Or how to address you... v22TTC? Maybe "Veetcy..."

Looks like I left for Darts 15 minutes early... Could have hashed out the Theme Ingredient with my dart buddies.

Actually... Probably better I DIDN'T know beforehand.

Luck, all!

Were you inspired by Elton John Supervike ?

Don't wish it away
Don't look at it like it's forever
Between you and me
I could honestly say
That things can only get better

And while I'm away
Dust out the demons inside
And it won't be long
Before you and me run
To the place in our hearts
Where we hide

And I guess that's why
They call it the blues
Time on my hands
Could be time spent with you
Laughing like children
Living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that's why
They call it the blues

Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands
Live for each second
Without hesitation
And never forget I'm your man

Without me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

And I guess that's why
They call it the blues
Time on my hands
Could be time spent with you
Laughing like children
Living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that's why
They call it the blues

Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

And I guess that's why
They call it the blues
Time on my hands
Could be time spent with you
Laughing like children
Living like lovers

Just remember all IPers....with the numbers the way they are, we should see alot of the

'Hey Gimme another chance' awards. (see the rules for more explaination...basically it is the highest scoring NON-winner, who will automatically advance despite losing.)

(assuming DNFers don't whack up the numbers...)

Well, it only took Jim one post to misspell my name. Jeff, PP's Doc Killingsworth could be converted to a BB King, and Tom, " Luck all" ? is that Good Luck or Bad Luck? Iron painters don't need luck. A small offshore account for bribes, maybe, but Luck is for Demon Weiners.

We need Smack talk. and maybe a miracle or two.

I'v had a think and looked through all of my mini's (only got about a carrier bag full) and I don't have anything that made me think it would fit in with the theme.

Will Bexely [SIC] end up doing filagree?

I can answer that.

"No."

Even though my office-mate is now e-mailing "suggestions" which consist of every Rackham Griffin figure he can find with filigree on it.

I really wish I had stopped in here before leaving this morning, though, so that I could start going through my bits trunk, instead of sitting here at work fidgeting trying to think of what I can do.

v22TTC
04-11-2008, 03:04 PM
OrkyDave: I meant being up against someone who paints blue so well, I'm going to have to own the theme so completely that the judges will each feel compelled to award me 15 out of 5 for theme for my entry... I know Supervike said `never to be repeated' but he hasn't seen my entry yet....

CommanderY: Just as it's written, I suppose, phonetically - vee twenty-two tee tee cee. v22's groovy, preferably lower case so I don't get confused with the Osprey tilt-rotor.... It's short for verse 22 Tao Te Ching, just so you know... though entering a competition might be a slightly roundabout way of acheiving that aim.... ;)

But you'll be needing all the advantages you can get, so my name's Rob and I've never finished a mini (except for a few for the cabinet and intro table at GW 5-6 years ago - but they really don't count:banghead:), so there's nothing to show. But I'm pretty arty, so trying to apply all that to 3D minis. I was going to try to finish something but as soon as I knew IP was coming 'round again I thought I might as well keep my powder dry and save the writing a new round in painting history for this competition, as I progress through to winning it....:bowsucker

If I'm putting the bits together correctly, you might know Angel of Menoth, so he can fill you in about what `I'm like'.... Not being egocentric but it's always worth knowing these things....

Reckon I've got my piece sorted in my head and it's not a GW mini (hurray!) and further, is Wyrd goodness!:)

Artemis: Need more stuff! Help!

PS I'm not really this arrogant - just trying to get the smack rolling!...

@350kilotons Hi! I would assume that you have had a chance to see my previous work. What can you tell me about yourself? :)

Well, I'm 6 feet tall, have dark brown hair and eyes, like chocolate and long walks in the park holding hands ...

Oh, you mean the painting!! *cough*

You know, I wish I could say that I was a multi-time GD winner and personally trained by Mike McVey (all praise be to him), but I would be lying. The truth is I got into painting minis with Rogue Trader in 1988. I painted one snotling then stopped till '91 where I painted a sum total of 32 miniatures, the last 7-9 of which I had mastered blending to make all the colours of my minis very very muddy and then stopped painting. I have painted 2 miniatures in the intervening time, both Space Orks. I got back into painting a couple of months ago and have painted 9 night goblins (yay black undercoat spay!) and another Space Ork.

I bet I had you a little worried when I told you when I first started. But not as worried as I was when I saw your galleries. However, I have my idea, and if I was Mike McVey I would own you. But as I am not, be prepared to be mildy amused by my stunning mediocrity.

Oh, this is the smack talk ... err ... did I tell you I have won like a thousand Slayer Swords (including the Pan-Mars Inaugural) and was a personal student of Mike McVey?

You look at it with disappointment, I look at it with relief.

It would have been nice to have a chance at a rematch with Jubilee or Skya, though. (then again, maybe missing that chance is a relief too ).

Well, don't get too comfortable because you just might get one of them in the next round. I mean ... err ... what's that funky smell?

Oh, it's me. Bath time.

Hi CommanderY: I'm guessing you're not one for ye olde smacke talke, so cool - I'm sure I'll get my fill in the next rounds. ;)

But seriously, I was wondering how you want to play this, in terms of smack, revealing what you're doing, WIPs and `how's it going?'s.... It's all good to me, so I'll go by what you'd prefer....

Reckon I'm going to be a bit of a Vincegamer - you know, laugh in the face of the box and go through the centre of the theme into an alternate universe, dragging the theme with me... but will I have time? As to the painting skill, who knows?... It's the whole digital doings that's giving me the total fear and I've only got access to a 4 megapixel camera - will post in the hobby bit asking for HELP! But I can promise, as a `perfectionist', that what I submit won't be crap (so it won't be a walk-over for you) and that barring my head actually falling off, I won't DNF!

I'm waiting for somebody to describe me as a dark horse... please....

I've sketched the scene and the minis in it and made notes of how I'm going to convert them but I usually like to give minis some respectful time before sawing them all up... sorry Nathan to do this to your pretties (will buy some replacements to paint up as intended).

I suspect this will be a pretty interesting `battle' and you're exactly the `type' of opponent I was hoping for, as it happens - though bordering on the `be careful what you wish for': I did want a GD/Slayer Sword winner (so I could drop some smack about folk who paint the GW way and work out some issues) but perhaps you're slightly too much of a good thing.... ;)

Good craic mate!

Well, don't get too comfortable because you just might get one of them in the next round. I mean ... err ... what's that funky smell?

Oh, it's me. Bath time.

Well, you seem friendly! Hi!

Thanks for the information. I had no idea who I was up against, it's nice to have read your message. It certainly seems that you can paint much more quickly than I do.

Well, if you do well in theme, you probably have an advantage. I usually paint an entry thinking I've nailed the theme, but have the judges disagree. :( (Sometimes I do okay too, though).

I'm haven't been much for smack-talk in the previous Iron Painters. Especially since I'm often against much better painters. I would like to make it to at least round three though. It's become a tradition. :)

Thanks!

Don't worry too much about the megapixel count, higher resolution just means it captures more flaws. Now that isn't to say don't take pictures. Also learn to love the macro feature on you camera (its the flower icon, and realize it does change color on most digital cameras) but realize that not every picture requires that you use the macro feature. And always shoot about 15 times as many pictures as you need.

Cheers Goblyn13, seriously, this digital stuff really makes me feel like an old man... and the way it always seems to do what it wants, not what I want as with good ol' analogue....

I was going to leave this for a week or so but it's getting me worried, so should probably get it sorted in my head sooner.

Do you mean that the macro feature itself changes colours more than the camera itself would?

It's probably best I post in the hobby bit but I'm still trying to get my questions straight....

[Remembers fondly the days of doing photography with an SLR, black and white film and developing own prints....]

I don't know about round three but you shouldn't really have any problems in getting to round two. I saw your gallery and it's really, really good. I like the almost porcelein feel some of your paintjobs have and the flesh on the Achilles Biomech and the sheer top on the vampiress in particular stand out. You can also paint eyes, which I can't do because the damn sculpts have improved so much since I was last painting (for goodness sake they're like 2mm across and .5mm wide nowadays. And don't get me started on the damn recessed eye sockets ...).

I am really looking forward to seeing your entry and I hope you would do me a favour by giving me some tips on how to improve my standard when I post mine if that's ok.

@Bexley Old School, eh? [old timer voice]Back in my day we had Squats, and were proud of 'em! The term beakie didn't exist because all of our Space Marines had pointy faces! As a matter of fact, back in my day 25mm miniatures were 25mm!!![/old timer voice] :D

Hi CommanderY: I'm guessing you're not one for ye olde smacke talke, so cool

Just didn't want to make you cry like the girl that you are inside.

You introduced yourself by saying "I've never finished a miniature," but only after I got an email from Jeremy that said, "I know him! He's never finished a miniature!"

So I figure I can spraypaint a turd and get by this round, thanks to the DNF I'm counting on from you. :ciao:

My idea is locked, the main ingredient is cleaned, filled, and ready for primer. I'll knock out the base tonight, and should get to painting tomorrow.

You're doomed, dude.

Oh - I wrote a simple photography article on how I do it - but it's pretty basic, and there are much more knowledgeable photogs out there with much more in depth articles. But something in there might help out:

Well, I've cleaned up most of the models I'll be using - yes, that's plural - and sawn them up: sculpting tomorrow! You might dominate the Oscars but this is Cannes baby, and I'm strictly indie!

[*Cough* and cheers for the photography link - I've been really enjoying mooching around your site *cough*]

Artemis: Will certainly get more stuff but think I might just go with what I've got for this - I'm pretty much going to have to sculpt most of what I need, scenery wise anyway....

Of course there are other colours besides grey in Coventry, theres the beautiful sandstone from the 2 Cathederasls we have, not to mention all the medeival buildings that are still standing in the city centre, then theres all the gorgeous clad new buildings that have went up in the past 5 years or so, and then even our football team are known as the Sky Blues!

The other thing I can remember is that my bed was stacked very high on cinder blocks and sandwiches, and i was worried the sandwiches were disappearing because I was on the FOOD network trying to sell them.

I was freaked out about it, and I can remember sitting in the dark in my bathroom and saying to myself "ok, I'm not on any tv show, my bed is fine".....

Don't want to spoil the surprise but I think I'm going to have a bash at the ol' only black, white and blue thing - don't think I've given myself quite enough challenges yet ;) - so I'd like the blue that will remain the truest blue when black/white is added in varying amounts....

Cool! Smack aside, it's an honour to cross brushes with you - and more importantly you seem like a sound guy! :) I've no doubt that my entry could rock the mellonfarming universe... whether it will or not is down to the time/talent fairies (my Muses have done me proud).

Every day that I haven't actually started painting is a weight.... I'm impressed with your handful of layers thing though - didn't realise that people did things like that... sounds like a lot of work.... ;)

I've just signed up for a 2D painting competition as well, thinking the start was going to be a while away - seems it might be quite close!

I dunno - sat on my arse for 36 years and finally get motivated and it's all kicking off!

Still sculpting and arranging the elements to form a pleasing composition - there's one pretty glaring detail I totally hadn't accounted for... how opaque metal is.... :)

Spent an hour fishing white tac out of the details on one mini with a pin (Cheers Demonherald)... `Don't say glue, say UHU'... been saying more than that!... Grrrr!

I seriously hope I've got all the preliminaries sorted by tomorrow night so I can post a WIP, before I start painting... I'm a bit worried but I reckon it's like Chinese cookery - it's all in the preparation!

You can easily build it or sculpt it but I know where to find a 28mm pewter piano if you want.

BTW concerning my IP entry, I sculpted all my instruments. The miniatures are done (six!!!). I am a bit fed up. I just have to paint the instruments and the base and I am done...probably tomorrow.

For the piano :

I also thought about the Blues Brothers but had no time to modify existing miniatures as they don't exist.

Commander Y - Congrats on the addition - sorry to hear about the other two. I had a German Shepard/Alsatian growing up that when she had pups she would go where she couldn't be seen, have the puppy, clean it then bring it to my dad, leave it with him, then go do the whole process again. Since she averaged 10 pups a litter, this could take a while.

Will `defo' upload a WIP tonight - still needs a bit more tidying up, details-wise but it'll do. Best I can do with my 20cm minimum focusing distance and 3 x optical zoom....

But you can never have too many learning curves in one go, so the resizing/pixelation is foxing me and it remains to be seen whether I can actually upload... expect a blank picture and another question about resolution....

I also seem to get logged out if I spend more than 5 mins trying to do anything on this site, so that might be a problem too.....

I didn't know that, even though it makes sense. He had explained that they were bred to have a fat pad around their neck so that if a badger tries to get them by the throat, it won't hurt them much. I shall (hopefully) be uploading a final piccy tomorrow (photo duties are being handled by a friend). I wasn't able to do the entry I wanted as I lacked the skill, so it's a single mini only, I'm afraid. It also contains a number of firsts for me; the first time in a long time I have used a white undercoat - the first time in a long time I have actually finished a miniature - my first cork base and... my first attempt ever at that new fangled 'I can't believe it's not metal' technique all the kids do now.

I have to say it hasn't turned out too well. But there is blue involved (on the mini as well as my mood on seeing the result).

All being well, mediocrity rides on the morrow!

Well, it will be your ticket into the next round, so no wonder!

The picture isn't the best quality, I have adjusted curves in Photoshop to get it closer to the actual paint scheme, and the person taking the picture didn't realize he had to get one of the back, where the blue is, but it's a blue-ish mini anyway.

It's a bit of a damning indictment of my level of painting ability, and I don't think I should have gone the NMM route without practising first, but I suppose I won't get any better without making the effort.

I had a figure already that I thought captured what I wanted nicely. It's a fairly simple figure (I picked it for theme, but maybe unconsciously because of its total lack of any kind of stupid decorative edging) so getting done shouldn't be an issue, barring calamity. I think I may have to go overboard on basing, though- the figure seems like it may be too simple, so I think the entry will need to get its flash from the groundwork.

I'm definitely having problems with mine. Now I know why I never paint blue, at all.

Also did a base, but then decided it was to small, so redid it larger, but forgot to put a colour in the mix which means it is to dark and the weathering effect doesn't show properly.
Might redo it after the comp, it should only take a few hours.

So i'v done about 20& of the model, but I really don't want Martyn to get through due to me being a DNF!

I have actually done all the blue now along with a bit of free hand that also doesn't meet my expectations so all that is left now is the nmm :( and then try and get a decent shot of the damn thing, should be done by Sunday though hopefully unless it gives me any more trouble.

@WG - repainting the bloody ship blue doesnt count me boyo! Its a mini painting contest, not a ship painting contest! :p:

Well, I've hit that super-serene mode you get when you know you're up against it... or at least I had until I saw the good Commander's entry.... Resigned myself to not getting any sleep 'til Sunday night, so might as well just go for it. Just a few bits left to glue on then I'll be painting - hurray!

Have deliberately not listened to any Blues until I started painting... so, ummm that's my secret weapon.... [Sigh....]

Who knows with judges though - my entry might just be different enough to float someone's boat: it honestly will look boss... but will it be boss enough?...

I hope it is not 1:1 scale vince.

Well, I got a WIMP up, I mean WIP....

Grr. My figure is sculpted so as to indicate a strong wind. On my way home from work, I realized I had another figure that fit the scene perfectly, and was even also sculpted with items blowing in a strong wind.

Except in the opposite direction. To include him, he'd have to be facing the primary subject, with his back to the viewer. Lame.

Probably just as well. I'd likely not get him done in time to add him to the scene anyway.

WG, I actually changed the figure haha, and did a bit of converting. I'v just stuck a quick WIP up, still got a way to go, including anything blue...

Iron enough, eh?

Like, say...

Iron enough to compete this season? :vb_devil:

I've proved my Iron twice now, rookie. Try that bluster on me again when you've done the same.

It's good to see that there's some good WIPs up now. Sorry to have taken so long to get back to here. Last Friday I hit the hospital for the third friggin time this month, this time with food poisoning or some virus that's very similar. The rest of this week I spent on a suprise trip out to GAMMA, which even though I was still recovering pretty solidly rocked.

Hope you're feeling better now Skya. See any neat stuff to tell us about at GAMA?

Much, thank you.

GAMA rocked. I got to see the Anima Tactics stuff all painted up. They look so much better in person and as expensive as they are I may have to pick up a couple. The Dust stuff pretty much kicks ass even though it's prepainted. I snagged a limited edition fig and got to drool over all the stuff in the case. The Mutant Chronicles figs looks sweet, but I dislike the booster style their selling them in. I like to know what I'm buying, thank you. Oooo and I got to try Reaper's new ProPaints, which I have to say I'm really liking a *lot* better then the old ones. Much smoother, none of that chalkiness, and they're very opaque. I gots to do some more experimenting with them, but I fully expect I'm going to end up using them regularly. I got bunches of pictures, hopefully I can find some time to get them off my camera.
