hmm...
I'd say not long now...
Lets get the Femme Fatale over with, and as the dust settles, we'll hit at it!
But, its a great opportunity for folks to start making suggestions of 'themes' I won't guarantee I'll use them...but its hard to keep those things fresh.
Have at it!

I'm the opposite, color theme are my favorite. I think the color and technical themes are better tests. They rely much less on mini selection and really test the painters skill and creativity within the craft to be done well.

What I had meant with my off color comment was in response to this:
"Does "miniature's in Thryth's collection" count as a theme?"
I was saying that no, that's not a good theme...But having everyone painting a mini in your collection would be a good Charity event!...

I have to confess I might be reluctant to enter something like that. The two (and a bit) IPs I've entered have resulted in some of my personal favourite minis, some of which I'd be unlikely to part with for a big chunk of money going to my own coffers. Though it's a different thing to go into painting something knowing you aren't keeping it, so that might help.
I'm up for the idea of painting something for charity in general sometime. Maybe something like we collectively paint up a few Wyrd skirmish bands and auction them off to promote the game/line as well as do a good deed.

03-03-2008, 10:39 AM
Heh, tell ya what, lets go ahead and take charity off the board until the end of the year and by that time, I'll look into something specific and give some options to the folks that might be interested in it (Children, Cancer, whatever). Throw out some minis, get them painted up and auction the buggers off.
We'll hold off on that for a bit though and see when and where that goes down the road.
In the mean time, I just piled the plates high on everyone that is working with Wyrd. :D

We gave our part of the business to the other two partners (there were a total of three stores in the chain). It's sad, but it was taking so much out of us. We were there 60+ hours a week (we had 16 days off last year), and you start to find it hard to enjoy the things you sell when you're immersed in them all the time. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed playing a wargame or TCG. My husband felt it was time for a 9-5 type gig for him, and he also wanted me to have time to paint more models/canvases. The only models I finished the second half of last year were my IP entries.
Running a small business, retail in particular, is so demanding that sometimes I'm surprised so many people will do it for as long as they do! The couple that runs our local comic book store recently switched their hours to closing Mondays but staying open until 8pm the rest of the week, which still seems like an awful lot of hours to me, but at least they get one day off a week now.
I hope you have lots of fun diving deep into the painting!

Just wondering - there were a few people who mentioned that they didn't like, need or want the prizes aspect of IP in the last one... would this be dropped this time round? Kudos and for the love and all that.... Trophies for the winner (and semi-finalists?) sound super cool though....

03-18-2008, 09:11 AM
??????? not heard that one before.. personally I think it is a great fun element ..(speaking of which Skya there is a Nice european style package ready to post to you..;-) I guess it's not really an enforced thing but rather adds to the fun competition element... I have a veritable mountain of unpainted stuff lying around so if anyone entering finds it a push to send something I will gladly help em out.....Trophies are a cool idea..
Beelzebrush
03-18-2008, 09:58 AM
I'm not sure whether I'm entering this time round....IP is usually the only thing that spurs me on to get some painting done but I have a painting crisis atm lol I reckon I've hit a plateau in terms of improving my stuff. I dunno... I think I'll either enter or just get shut of all my painting gear and retire... meh!
IP sounds like just the kind of thing to help you push through a plateau Beelze, but whether you enter this one or not, I hope you won't retire! Is there a particular area where you're feeling stuck? (I mean straight technique, telling a story, choosing colours or minis or...?)
I won't be able to enter this season, but I hope to be an active spectator. I've got that 10-day holiday that knocked me out of IP3 coming up, and the rest of the time until post-Gen Con trying to paint as many entries for ReaperCon and Gen Con as I can fit in between a couple of commissions.
I also have quite an ample supply of unpainted minis and can volunteer to send a few on someone's behalf if they'd like to enter but are worried about the prize compensation.

I might try entering the IP again as I should be fairly settled into the house by then. Other than the public painting thing I did a couple of weeks ago, I haven't touched a brush in over a month. Might help get me kick-started.

But yeah, I don't want to be the new guy who comes in and tells everyone that what they're doing is wrong - wouldn't have mentioned it if it hadn't been mentioned already by respected and established folks.... If folk are generally cool with it then cool - just leaves a slightly unpleasant taste with me, that's all (nothing to do with the amount). IIRC, weren't some of the prizes paid for out of Supervike's pocket too?

Yup, I remember that conversation as well v22TTC. It's certainly something we should take under consideration.
I have paid for several of the 'grand prizes' out of my own pocket, but that is just cuz I came up with the idea...Plus, I stole the money from the donation basket at church, so really, wheres the harm?
More seriously, there have been plenty of folks that stepped up and donated to the cause with fantastic things, so please don't give me too much credit. (but give me some garsh dammit, I crave attention and love!)
I kind of feel the prizes are very secondary to the whole shebang, and I love the trophy idea (it's something I've been 'exploring' as well.) But, I really just want to do whatever makes the folks happy. If we keep the prizes, and the 'victors' award, I'm fine with that too.
I welcome all new ideas!!

I like both the idea of prizes or prestige in winning. I spend way too much time every year painting GD entries for the honor of taking home a resin freakin demon (and hopefully a sword this year:)). It's actually nice to enter a competition and have a chance at winning "something".
