The Iron Painter just keeps chugging along towards the inevitable conclusion!
Another fantastic round from our hotshots. To be honest I was a little leary of the theme from last time, but once again I am shown that just giving an idea can encourage artists to great heights!
Right to it...
Winners are in RED, losers please send your victor a 'booty' prize.
Demonherald 58 vs Morf 54.5
Brushmistress 52.5 vs. Skya 55.5
Congrats to those that move on, and our condolences to those who have to get off this ride.
Morf was a great newcomer contestant, and really took advantage of the 'Hey Gimme another chance" Prize. Fantastic entrys and a great contestant! I loved the comic book feel he gave to all his submissions.
Brushmistress wowed us from the get go, and you could see right away she was going to be a threat to the crown of IP. Another newcomer, now leaves a seasoned veteran. I hope she'll return with a vengeance next season!
Look for a new matchup (I wonder who will get paired with who? LOL) and THEME in a new thread soon.
Scoring breakdowns, judges comments and assorted shinanigans will follow shortly...

Thats a hell of a group of scores well done all........Time to see if I can grip it by the danglies and take another previous winners scalp....
Hopefully you and brushmistress will do something to finish the final theme with maybe a pair off for 3rd place???

As far as I'm concerned nobody lost this round. Every piece was pretty amazing. Congrats to everyone, but especially those moving into the finals.

Congratulations to all four of you, but especially to DH and Skya for advancing. It was a round with some truly amazing entries.

Congratulations to Demonherald and to Skya. You're both amazing artist, and I look forward to seeing you in next years IP. Thank you all for the great competition throughout! I plan on entering "I Think I Can", so if you'd care to join me Morf, we can continue on for fun of it.
I hope I can. Not that I am happy to be out but I got SO much work to do before going to holidays in 3 weeks, it is almost like a blessing. I'm not very good with working when I don't have to :)

In my opinion that's when you truly show your iron Morf. ;)
Congrats all. I had a sneaking suspicion after round 1 that it was going to come down to these two. I look forward to the finish. :)

C'mon Morf- you can do it! This past round was hellish for me between work and the holidays, and I was seriously considering the possibility of a DNF to lower my stress levels. I decided that was just crap and had to keep going (it is the Iron Painter after all). Give it a whirl! (I say as I don't even know what the next category is).
Congrats to the winners! Though I'm sorry all couldn't proceed as the work from this round was so enjoyable to look at.

(snifff) I know I told DH he had to win cuz I wasn't going to be knocked out by anything but the best...but then skya's my fellow IMMP and I gotta support her...but then I really love DH's work so far...but I know skya's been pushing herself and doing new stuff and learning lots and I know she's put off so much to work in this competition and she deserves to win it...but DH is sending me a bribe...but skya brought cookies...but ...but... I WANT A TIE!

Judges Comments:
Anders:
Here are my judgements:
Morf:
Theme: 4
Technique: 4.5
Overall: 9
Comment: Very well done! I really like how you pulled off the vegetation here. Technique wise, this is really top notch work. Some small spots seem a little rough, but on the whole everything is of very high level. A fun idea, good composition and excellent execution!
Skya:
Theme: 5
Technique: 4.5
Oveall: 8.5
Comment: Great work on this and I love the concept (especially since I read Wintersmith by Pratchett not long ago)! I must admit to personally not being very fond of using LED or other real light on minis, but it's a matter of personal preference so I won't let that affect my scoring. Other than that I like mostly everything about this. The mini is excellently painted and the setting is very atmospheric. One slight minus is the tree trunk, which I think look a bit "soft" and rubbery.
demonherald:
Theme: 5
Technique: 5
Overall: 9.5
Comment: Well, what can I say? I am amazed! I love this idea and you have pulled it off brilliantly. How many hours do your days contain? Surely it has to be more than 24... One very slight thing that bothers me are the leaves in the autumn quarter. I think they look a little flat and on the upper part of the tree trunk they look sort of tacked on to the tree, if you see what I mean. I would have liked it better if they looked a bit crumpled and where massed on the ground and perhaps the occasional leaf a bit further upp the tree trunk. As I said, a minor complaint... but I had to find something, hadn't I? ;)
Brushmistress:
Theme: 4
Technique: 4.5

Comment: Yet another great entry! Fun idea. The OSL is very well pulled off. I like how you did not do everything red and yellow, but worked greens into the skin, for instance, so that it clearly another colour than other areas. It's a common thing to let the colour of the light source have too much effect which effectively makes the mini look monochromatic. You have avoided this. I would have liked to see another angle of this instead of two pictures showing basically the same thing. It is always interesting to see what people do with the side of the mini that is opposite the light source. It is a quite problematic thing to deal with. Perhaps it was better from a competitive point of view to only show the front view? ;)

Notes: I have to give extra points for the clever interpretation of the theme here and use of minis to bring it into being. The painting is great too, VERY clean and the basework is great, is that etched brass corn? Overall the only think that brings it down a touch is that the minis contrast a little much with the scene itself and the colors just stick out a little too much. That’s not a big complaint though really, great work!
Skya
Theme: 5
Technique: 4.5
Overall: 9.5
Notes: it took me a second when I first saw this to realize what was going on with it, but then once I figured it out, the more and more I looked and thought about it, the more it became my favorite piece this round. The ambiance and dynamic of the scene you’ve created is great, and the real light in the staff just ads to it in a very real way. The painting is great although I think the only think that brings it down for me is that I just don’t really like the snow effect on the edge of the dress which while well done, makes it look just a touch messy. Really nice Skya.
Demonherald
Theme: 4.5
Technique: 5
Overall: 9
Notes: Really cool idea here, and well constructed piece. The painting in 4 different styles is outstanding and really shows off a ton of different skills that you rarely all see in one piece, so I think this is my first 5 for technique so far in this iron painter. Theme is great, but it’s just a little too predictable and didn’t make me laugh, so you’ll have to settle for a near perfect rather than perfect score there. Overall, while the scene is amazingly well done, it just lacks a touch of the dynamic and story in some of your other pieces (and in Skya’s from this round).
Brushmistress
Theme: 4.5
Technique: 4.5
Overall: 9
Notes: ok, first off I’m going to ignore the background, because I think that it really confuses the piece, so I’m only going to focus on the mini itself. Themewise you gave me a chuckle and I love the little details you’ve added here, although like Demonherald it is a touch predictable, and some of the dynamic we see in the other pieces is lacking here. (can you tell how picky I’ve gotten trying to score this round!). Techniquewise this is what I expect from you, great clean blends, sharp freehand, good conversions and effective OSL which all creates a great environment and scene. Overall great work here, just no more computer backgrounds!

Awesome show all 4 and interesting to read the comments I can feel the judges pain at this stage The final sure will be tough...
Thanks for the comments! I really appreciate them.
Eric, the corn is by Busch, it is a railroad scenery piece, there is like 400 stalks (that is a square meter) for about 15$ plus it comes with a flock to cover the tops.

Wow...it has been a joy to watch this round of IP and this semi-final round really capped it off. Amazing stuff by everyone. Best of luck (although neither of the finalists need it!) to Skya and DH. I can't wait to see what's next!
Gotta admit to being really antsy to get the theme for the next round.

You'll be fine anyway, Rob! You could probably manage to paint an entire army for your entry. ;)
Indeed. I need to see if I can get someone to help me spring some of those captive Paint Fairies he has slaving away in his workshop. Then at least we might be competing with the same number of models. :P

The funny thing is and Tony ...(Rkid) can be witness... I started that entry last Sunday and in the meantime have also done A Barbarian A high elf prince 5 space wolf bikes and a few other bits as well as the JMD bust and elf I put in my galleries...so almost an army....great fun.....I have a pretty clear schedule this time around though just hoping that the theme triggers an inspirational thought....hee hee t'is exciting...
Eric, if you're interested in that corn you might try your local Hobby Town. Ours has started carrying some Busch products (the tiny rose I used in the first version of my OSL vampire is one of theirs), and since I live in the middle of nowhere it seems some of the stores in the larger markets might be getting it in also. I've seen the corn, a kit for a pond scene, fencing and a few other things from them.
dh - you are just scary in your production capacity, and I think if you enter the next IP we'll have to enter you twice and you do two entries a round or something! I face Sue's dilemma of supporting a favourite lady painter or the brush that took me out. As I have not been offered bribes, Skya still has my support for now. ;->

Yeah, but sooner or later he will get paired up with himself and one of him gets knocked out. Then we'll be back to this situation again. :)

Ahhh but I might get a give me another chance ruling.....or I could paint them to exactly the same scoring for theme technique and overall and the judging commitee could decide which me to knockout...

So, Rob, you're counting on getting an idea immediately upon seeing the new theme and rush off to order minis or parts? ;)
demonherald
01-11-2008, 09:20 AM
that's always the plan.....I have a massive massive stockpile but sometimes it's easier (lazier) to order the parts I think will work.. I do all my ordering on a Friday so wait for the IP theme before shopping just in case.. It adds that extra element to the whole thing....Of course There is occasionally a little thinking involved that may take more than a day but hey ho ..It'll bejust nice to know and I'm sure Skya will agree.. It saves trying to second guess Vike....and puts the whole thing in focus...
