With the new year here its time to start up another Wyrd Painting Contest. As with all the Wyrd contests this one is themed as well and we bring back our most popular theme of all. Without further preamble, I'm happy to announce the 'Wyrd Painting Contest - Femme Fatale III!'For the seductive, irresistible and ultimately dangerous ladies. The only requirement here is that the ladies look good and are dangerous. Any weapon toting, spell wielding woman that can take your breath away, literally, will do just fine!

The categories for the contest are:ALTERNATIVE: The lovely ladies that just don't seem to fit in to any other categories. This can be gun toting cowgirls, chainsaw wielding cheerleaders or any number of other miniatures that we haven't thought of.

DEADLY DUEL: A diorama with two or more combatants locked in combat or something equally disturbing. At least one miniature must be female.

FANTASY: Sword wielding barbarians, harem guards or lovely lasses ready to put a charm on you. If the miniature is pure fantasy, this is her category.

SCI-FI: Gun toting ladies of the deadly future or weapon wielding aliens dancing a song of death or perhaps a steampunk lady of the night. A wide range of miniatures will fit nicely into this category.

SIMPLY SCANDALOUS: Ladies that have for one reason or another forgone clothing and have decided to share their charms with us. Also, with the number of talented painters in the community, ladies who's clothing has been painted sheer so as to see through it will be placed within here. I expect this will be a large category!

The specific rules for the contest can be found on the Wyrd Miniatures website on the forums under 'Wyrd Painting Contest: Rules and Information' (http://wyrd-games.net/forumdisplay.php?f=7) as well as questions and answers that have arisen in the past which may be of some help to you.

The contest will run from January 5th to February 25th and during that time competition entries can be submitted. At the close of the contest, voting will commence for one week where you will be allowed to vote anonymously through the Wyrd forum software as well as leave comments and critique which we have found our previous entrants have greatly enjoyed. After the voting, announcements will be made and prizes sent to the winners, along with the random prizes that we give away with every contest.

In order to participate in the contest you must create an account on the Wyrd Miniatures website in order to submit an entry and to vote in the polls which will decide the winners of the contest. You are encouraged to enjoy the forums and participate, but it is NOT required in any fashion in order to enjoy the Wyrd Painting Contest.

Wyrd staff CAN enter the contest and have a chance to win.

When participating in the competition, you must submit a miniature that is in line with the current THEME that is being hosted. The miniature can be from any miniature manufacturer. Conversions are both allowed and encouraged.

All submissions must be yours alone, no passing off of someone else's work as your own. You CAN submit a miniature that someone else has converted or sculpted for you though - just not painted, based .. etc.

You are allowed to submit MULTIPLE entries to the contest. As many as you can paint, you can submit.

The miniature cannot have been displayed in any form elsewhere on the internet or published mediums such as magazines. ALL entries must be new unseen paint jobs! All contest entries will be displayed anonymously to prevent unfair advantages based on name (this isn't a popularity contest) and thus there can be no signatures or watermarks upon any entries. No announcing on forums, web page, blogs or any other type of medium about the type of miniature that you will be painting, nor concept sketches.

When photographing and editing your pictures, please submit them in .JPG (JPEG) format, with a file size of no larger than 250k. Photographs can be no larger than 800 pixels wide. I'm not much worried about length as it will allow you to fit in angles of the photograph. If you send me a photograph that doesn't fall within the limits prescribed above, it will be deleted. Due to the sheer number of people that have entered unedited photographs in the past we will no longer do any editing for you. There are many free photo resizing programs out there. You can find one here at http://www.irfanview.com/ (http://www.irfanview.com/) Wyrd staff will attempt to notify anyone who's pictures were deleted due to size or for any reason, but can not guarantee notification.

Miniatures can be submitted at any time during the contest until voting starts. None will be showcased till the day after the final submissions date. Submissions will be accepted up till Midnight, EASTERN U.S. time, on the closing date of the currently running contest. Submissions after the cut off date will NOT be accepted, no exceptions.

In order to submit an entry for the contest, go to the current contest gallery and upload your entry. As the gallery is set for moderation, your submission will NOT show up immediately but will instead wait for me to review and edit accordingly. When submitting your contest entry, please take the time to describe the miniature and as well as any other contest notes you wish me to review before editing. DO NOT add any web page links, mention of your name/handle, links to larger pictures or any other form of personal identification to your description.

At the closing date of the contest, the submissions will be published to the proper contest gallery, anonymously, and the voting will begin.

In order to vote, you must be a registered member of the website.

A poll with your choice of winners will be presented to you where you select your favorites. While viewing the contest submissions in the gallery, you will be allowed to leave comments and critique on the entry. Please try to be constructive with these comments.

Public Voting will be open for seven days immediately after polls are posted for the contest. After the voting, announcements will be made and prizes sent out.

As always, we have a load of goodies and prizes to give away and this contest is no different. 1st through 3rd place winners in each category will win prizes and this year we're also including Wyrd T-shirts for Best of Show, Best Base or Diorama and Best of Wyrd winners which will be personalized announcing your domination of the contest!

Naturally we'll be continuing our 'Random Schmuck!' and 'Complete Schmuck!' random awards as well, where random entrants and voting/commenting participants receive miniatures and/or gift certificates as encouragement for participating and as our way of saying thanks for taking the time.

Should there be any questions, or if anything is unclear, PLEASE take the time to ask in the forums as that is the quickest way to receive clarification on a subject as well as bring it to the attention of others.

Best of luck and heres to another fun and successful painting contest. Pass the word!

Where's Vike with a "boobie" comment when you need him?

I do have a question that I'll have to PM to Nathan later.

Yay, Femme Fatale!

*EDIT* @ everybody - if you can't figure out how to submit to the contest gallery, see this thread: How to Upload to the Contest Gallery (http://wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?t=1783). And remember, you won't see it appear after submitting, just a message saying it's submitted, you just gotta take it on faith that it's in, or send a PM to Frustrated Father if you're truly worried.

Hope this helps any new entrants out there!

Steph our artist did the artwork as he does most everything around here. She's actually not finished, but we decided to play around a bit when it came to putting together a banner.

EricJ did the actual banner itself, putting everything together and making it look all oooey-goooey nice. Least I was impressed with it!

And yeah, she'll end up on a t-shirt here soon ... maybe even as a permanent piece of work here on the redo of the site in the future.

But, back to the contest - I'm really looking forward to seeing what ya'll put into the contest this time around as this always tend to be the favorite and most diverse theme for the competitions.

Spread the word!

Alrighty, something that I was approached about some time back but to be honest, with the holidays here and everything going on behind the scenes, I missed it out on the the initial announcement. That having been said, I think there is still plenty of time and we've already got the first groups good to go.

We've been asked to host a Club Challenge within the confines and rules of our painting contests and we're more than happy to do so in the spirit of good smack talk and offering an outlet for enjoyment of our hobby.

At the moment it is the IMMPS and the Golden Goblins of Belgium who will be going brush vs. brush, but should you have a paint club that would like to get in on the action, you are more than welcome! Here is some of the information and the smack to the noggin, care of Sue Wachowski.
"The IMMPS (Illinois/Midwest Mini painters Society) Paint Club challenges any and all other paint clubs to a duel of brushes! All members will paint and enter the same figure, and we will see which club has the golden touch, which clubs are left in the dust, and which clubs will be crying in their paint water next paint nite!" ~Sue wachowski, aka PaintMinion, IMMPS Chief
A "Club" must have three or more registered members compete (meaning at least three separate individual entries from each club). At the time of your entry upload, be sure to state your club name within the description (it will be removed before going public, but this will allow up to categorize on our end).

Club Challenge will be a separate category. Totally anonymous at time of judging and the top miniature of the Club Challenge category will take the honor for the entire club!

The miniature has already been decided (no, I didn't require it to be a Wyrd!) and I'll let Sue post that information.

Now, what do you get? Well bragging rights mostly, and a healthy ego boost, but the club that wins will have a box of goodies sent to them care of Wyrd which can then be distributed amongst the Club participants.

All the best!

I dug through my Box o' Mini last night, and pulled out a lovely lady I bought a few months ago. She is one of those minis you just buy that has no use for you, but you just love the sculpt. She is a bit ambitious, but I'll try and do here justice. Hopefully I knock her out and get two entries in for this now.

AHA! Thank you, Nathan, I knew you couldn't pass up something like this!

During the old Chick Challenge, we used to have a Club Challenge, a battle of the brushes that would start between the Golden Goblins and the IMMPS, and include clubs around the world. We think it's time to bring that tradition back!

Bring on your A+ painting game and try and prove your club has what it takes to call itself the best. We think it's IMMPS. Try and prove us wrong!

We smack your faces with our painting brushes and challenge you paint nite partiers to paint...the Freebooter Pirate Queen! (PIR 003)! Tall pointy hat! Battle bikini! Sword AND Guns!

http://www.freebooterminiatures.de/shop/shop_files/img_3/PIR003_1.jpg

I'll just go tell the IMMPS and those pesky Golden Goblins in Belgium that the heat is ON!

I'll withhold my personal opinion of the Pirate Queen sculpt for the moment. A few questions on the club challenge:

1. Can the model be modified or must it be stock?

2. Same question for the base.

3. Acquiring this model from overseas can take some serious time, are there any readily available suppliers here in the States for the fig?

The BrushThralls are considering throwing our hats into the ring for this one.

Heh, it's probably a pretty similar opinion to mine. However yes, you should be able to modify the silly thing and base her however you please, or trust me theres no way I'd even be looking at painting her. :P The idea is to start with the same thing and see where we all end up. Oh and as I recall you can blame the Golden Goblins for the choice of mini. We would go back and forth choosing minis each year and it was their picked for the chick challenge that never happened.

Thanks Noel. That hat has GOT to go...

We're in. I have 3 participants. They're chewing on the $18 price tag for a 30mm mini though.

YoungWolf7
01-08-2008, 07:54 PM
Oh, one more question: how does the scoring work on this? Just which club gets the highest rated piece or an aggregate score of all of the club's entries? Not that it matters, just curious.

Skya

Yeah when we got ours a couple years ago they were $13-14, which was still a harsh price for a 30mm piece at the time.

As for "scoring" we always just did it as the club who's member paints the figure that scores the highest wins. Of course it was also the chick challenge, which had the choose 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for voting where a first place vote got three points, a second place vote got 2 points and a third place vote got 1 point, total the points to see who has the highest score. So this is going to end up a bit different.

I have 2, maybe 3, figures that I plan on entering. Nothing unusual there (since I entered 5 last year).

The strange part is that they are all wearing clothes (since a "battle bikini" counts as clothes).

I was just looking over the Perdita concept art on the Femme Fatale banner and I noticed that even though she's standing there like she ready for a quick-draw showdown, there's no gun in her holster..... errrr....

@demonherald : you might want to reread who wrote what ... It's from a series of french comic books by Pat Mills and Olivier Ledroit called "Requiem the Vampire Knight". As far as I know, it's published in french, german, and spanish. The "lady" is a zombie pirate queen that ambushes black opium convoys lead by vampires.

Could be worse. My last order from an online retailer that starts with "C" (and ends with "MoN", for those keeping score) was placed back in late November. Not only has it not shipped, they don't respond to emails either. Bastards. I won't be ordering from them again.

PMs work best with them. Did you write to Borg or Chern? Borg is the one who runs the store.

I had a problem with an order from CMON store last week and emailed them about it and got answered the same day. You should use the same address that order notifications are sent from. I tried the contact form on the store website first, but that didn't seem to work so I emailed them directly and got immediate answer. I think they are alright!

Hi folks,
it sometimes happens to me : the sight of so many unfinished minis drives me crazy every now and then and I start a painting spree !

So far, 12 minis are done except for maybe last minute touch-ups, and more are coming...hehehe

ok, so the quality is not always there, but maybe one or two minis will stand out a little and get some nice comments.

I usually have a hard time selecting my minis for a contest, so I end up starting a handful at a time and give up on those that do not meet my aesthetic standards, therefore leaving me with another batch of unfinished minis for the next contest : a real vicious circle !

Thank God, Nathan always comes up with a new contest
Cheers !

That sounds so familiar....the circle is indeed extremely vicious....

No, I haven't tried that. I just tried the contact info that they provide a link to in their online store.

When will the gallery be ready. I'm not currently seeing it.

It's been up since day one. Here is a link to help you that Duende was helpful enough to put together some time back. Just substitute FFIII categories.

I finished my entry up this weekend. I need to get some photography done this weekend so I can get her entered. I was originally shooting for two entries, but I don't think that's gonna happen, I slacked off to long to give the second one the attention it deserves.

I've got two going. One is nearly done, and will be finished in time barring disasters. The other is iffy, and depends on how much free time I get during the week.

Then, it's right into my GenCon entries. Well, entry. I'm doing one fairly large group, and maybe something else, if time allows.

Everyone will get a full day to see whether or not everything made it up fine. The nice thing about this software is I can track when someone 'attempts' to upload something so if for some reason its not there, holler at out, I'll take a look through the logs and if everything pans out, we'll get it up for you.

We have a 24 hour grace period for everyone to take a look at the entries before the voting goes up. This is to make certain we haven't missed something, entries are in the right place, and/or if someones broken the rule of anonymity.
