Well...at first I thought I would hold off for a week, but as I listened to the folks left in nothing would be more IRON than to press forward.

Plus, when I drew for the new theme, I thought for sure we should go ahead.

SO...the only difference is that I'm announcing a DAY EARLY.

THE MATCHUPS (drawn randomly) are as follows:

Demonherald vs Morf

Brushmistress vs. Skya

The theme is simply

SEASONAL

How you interpret that is really up to you. Go with an autumn theme? A spring theme? A Holiday theme...Your interpretation is as important as your brushwork....remember, it's all about making the judges happy.

The Deadline will remain in effect, and will be

SUNDAY JAN. 6th at 6 PM CST

Will Demonherald continue to Dominate?
Will newcomer Brushmistress be able to topple previous winner Skya?
Will Morf make a name for himself here?

All that and more will be answered in the 5th round of this amazing IP....Which begins.....

NOW

Wow; sound be interesting to see the interpretations of this theme. Plus, having to press on over the holidays should prove interesting.

Good luck everyone.

Well I'm kinda glad I'm out now. My iron is running low right now I don't know if I would have had it in me to do a seasonal piece. Good luck to the remaining contestants, they'll need to be made of stern stuff to finish these.

Ouch, that's harsh having the match-ups so one fine woman painter eliminates another! Fun theme, though very wide open so I'm not so sad I'm already eliminated. Particularly since I already did a holiday seasonal one earlier. Looking forward to seeing what these fine competitors come up with! I mean there's a whole extra day here, I expect to see some pretty stunning stuff. ;->

A season each decided by birthdays or randomly determined...hee hee..
using the same model with no converting or fancy basework.
blindfolded while pissed
singing christmas carols and riding santas sleigh.......

I've got my idea gonna have to pop into town and actually buy a model in a shop to make sure deliveries don't bugger it up..only hope I can remember how to purchase a model in a store with out a shopping cart to click...If it works it's gona be a cracker...of couse the inevitable will happen where the wonderful idea is gradually decreased and chipped away to bare mnimum as the realisation of the impact of the holidays and the effect of the drugs kicks in but my initial plan has 13 models ....(gulp)

Meh, my main issue with this round is that "seasonal" has some weirdly commercialized connotations to me. Makes me feel uncomfortably like I'm about to be bombarded by toys and crap from the Seasonal aisle of the grocery store. It's one of those terms that just makes me wince. I'm not one of those people who enjoys holidays in general. I like the fireworks on the fourth of July, I think the holiday itself is kinda silly though. I like Christmas lights in December, but Christmas shopping, and Christmas songs and all sorts of other nonsense drives me batty. Some of the "old fashion" Christmas stuff is kinda cool. Christmas is one of the few "seasonal" holidays that actually feels seasonal to me. Mostly I think because it's one of the few holidays that my family ever cared about and got together for. I dunno, it has more depth to it. Valentines day is just dumb. While I can appreciate St. Patty's day as a celebration of a culture it feels like it's just been made into cutsie leprechauns and four leaf clovers. I'm not overly religious and I'm only as Christian as being raised in this culture, and not actively rejecting it makes me, but I can at least appreciate the Christmas symbols.

Honestly I've got a couple of very different ideas wandering through my head. I'm thinking I'm either going for the straight forward Nativity scene, as Tom Meier did some beautifully sculpted 54mm Nativity pieces, and I'd love to be able to give them as a set to my brother who *is* very Christian; or I'm going to go entirely the other direction pulling myself away from the holiday definition of seasonal and see what I can do about representing the transition of the seasons. Maybe try to represent the archytype of a season? I dunno, much brainstorming must happen. Suffice to say, I'm not particularly fond of the theme this round, but I think I'll get over it and find something I like.

Got it!
It's gonna be a pain in the b... to put it together though. All I can say it involves a long-not-seen miniature from a certain French company and off course I am sticking to my IP comic book theme.

I've noticed that the nights after the themes are announced are usually pretty sleepless and I keep tossing and turning...

Hinton

I agree about the commercialization of the holidays; it's one of the reasons that Christmas always bothers me so much anymore. These days it's just me and my daughter and I don't get all stressed out about going places or big elaborate dinners. I get her a couple of things that she really wants and don't go overboard. It's more about spending the day together and having fun playing games.

Halloween is still my favorite holiday, although it seems that big business is trying to kill it by making it into a parody of itself. I mean, looking at costumes this year for my daughter there was hardly anything that could be classified as "scary"; it was all cutsie crap. And where were all of the horror movies on TV? Granted, I have a great many horror movies on DVD, but there were hardly any on TV this year.

Ok, sorry; got off on a rant there. Back to the IP stuff.

Wren

So is Batman smelling, Robin laying an egg and a wheeless Batmobile what you're working on Morf? ;->

I kind of have to agree the commercialization of holidays is getting out-of-control. One thing that really struck me when I moved from Canada to the US is just how much holidays are retailed here. (I had never before seen a whole section of a store devoted to Valentine decorations. Candy, sure, but decorations?) In fact the stores are in such a rush to make money off the next holiday they're done with the current one before it's officially over! You can buy discounted wrapping paper or costumes or whatever after the holiday in Canada. (Personal favourite - half price delicious chocolate at Laura Secord's after Easter, but you have to gamble on whether or not any of the precious peanut butter eggs will be left over.) Here in America I can buy discounted Hallowe'en decorations or Xmas wrapping paper a week or two _before_ the holiday. Which is usually just around the time I'm debating whether I'm even going to get off my lazy butt and do anything about it. Just baffles me.

Christmas songs are one of the old traditions, and one I like, but hearing them from mid-November on makes them kind of irritating. Not working in the mall any more has reduced my Christmas commercialization hostility a bit. (My antidote was to play Jazz and Blues Christmas carols on my shift.) But the TV ads exhorting people to not just buy a gift but 'fulfill a dream' are really getting up my nose. Or just buy a gift card, which to me is the polar opposite. This one I'll pick on Canada more - gift cards at the liquor store. A bottle of booze was the original impersonal gift. But now you can not even care enough to pick out what type of booze.

Hallowe'en has always been one of my favourite holidays, and I think part of that was because it was a do-it-yourself holiday. Not just costumes, but the people who'd do up their whole houses and yards with a theme or as spooky houses. Commercial costumes seem a lot more prevalent now. And while on the one hand they're a lot nicer than the stuff you could buy when I was a kid, and a lot more affordable than renting fancy costumes, on the other it loses some creativity. My mother made me a Princess costume one year. The next year she dyed it brown and sent me out as a druid. (Admittedly I was a little frightened of the people who opened the door and knew what I was straight off. ;->) I remember kids at a high school dance doing wallflowers (big flowers on their head and brick wall bodies), pairs of sneakers, teacher spoofs, Rubik's cube, all kinds of cool stuff. I worked two Hallowe'ens at the mall and it was a bit sad to see the streams of Disney Princesses and superhero es/anime characters from whatever movies were hot that year. Some of the parents put on some great costumes, though.

I am what I hope to be called very christian, and yet I ca say that the commercialization of Christmas is disturbing enough to where it one o my least favorite "Holidays". I love the day for its meaning and its history, I care nothing about it for the modern pagentry and retail craved build up it has become.

The only part of the pagentry that I do like, is that it i one of the very few times of the year that non (or as I like to call them, PRE) believers actually take the time to think or do something nice for other people that they normally would not take the time to do.

I could say is one of the few times a year (along with Easter) that people actually go to church, but truth be told, I don't appreciate that as much because then I know its all for show and not for their soul.

Anywho... getting off my soapbox...

Good luck with all your Iron count this round.

ok, while I agree that christmas is overly commercialized, it's still one of my favorite holidays because basically I choose not to pay attention to that stuff! I just know it's a day where I'll get to see my whole family every year, and I love putting smiles on their faces and so I enjoy the present buying, and really have no expectations about what i'll receive. I know ever christmas morning my mom and I will get up before the rest of the family and sit by the tree in the dark except for the christmas lights and have some of the best time we have together all year just chatting waiting for everyone else. I know there are a few special foods we only cook for christmas which have so many wonderful memories associated with them. And since I don't really watch TV much at all, all those other christmassy things aren't shoved in my face.

Basically I think it is largely what you make it, and I just choose to focus on the good things and ignore all the rest

oh, and IP, good luck! :D

Wren

Oh yeah! I love that movie. That's one thing that I always look forward to each year at Christmas.

I've somehow managed to avoid ever seeing that movie aside from a few snippets here and there. Which is kind of funny as they filmed part of it at my cousin's school. This might be the year I get around to it, as we'll be spending Christmas with some die-hard fans.

Eric - I think some of the stuff you mentioned is why I'm more sensitive to the commercialization (that and having worked in the mall for a couple of Christmases, never had a retail job as a kid). I've moved hundreds of miles away from my friends and family or my husband's. Christmas to me was always the one time of year when I'd go to parties and dinners and do stuff other people wanted to. Not stress free, not always without complaint, but that was the Christmas spirit part of it for me - it wasn't about doing what I want, it was about getting off my butt to make my loved ones happy. In a way being able to do more of what I want (or not do less of what I don't want) makes me feel less Christmassy.

12-21-2007, 12:35 PM
One of the things I've begun doing to help combat the 'stress' of holiday crowds is being kind and polite to strangers. Kind of shocking, as this is really what should be the norm, but It works wonders for me.

I hate crowds and being with lots of people anyhow, but I force myself to make eye contact, give folks a nod, always excuse myself if I walk past, smile alot... I know this sounds goofy...but believe me after you do it, you start to feel it...And even better some people start to reciprocate. Of course there are always going to be those that do not, but to be honest-- I do it for myself. It is unbelievable how much more energy and joy it brings to me and makes the stress just melt away.

I doesnt' always work, mind you, but being in the right frame of mind is most of the battle.

Yeah, having to hear christmas carols before the turkey was even cooked this year pretty much made me roll my eyes and find a different radio station. I find that not having money to spend on anything really makes this holiday season much happier for my family...we have a small budget, shopping was straightforward and is done. Tree up, presents wrapped, no splurging on extra decorations or extravagant gifts, and now the best part...seeing my family for the weekend, Art's family for the Eve, and spending the day as our own small family on Christmas Day. Both families include close friends in their celebrations, so it's always a good time with good people and good food, playing games and talking and just being together with lots of laughter and good memories. None of us are super religious and some of us aren't even christian in leanings, but the season means "family and friends" to all of us. And this is the first real year my daughter no longer believes that Santa comes...but we may make the grandparents fake the reindeer bells and the "kids" all hide in bed no matter what time it is and Santa stomps in the front door with a "Ho Ho Ho!" and leaves very cold presents that have really been stashed in the garage for weeks. They have a good time acting, why ruin their fun? My daughter understands that "Santa" is within each of us and we must all play our parts to bring out his spirit in ourselves and others. She already has secret gifts for everyone that she made this year! Not even I know where she hid them!

Wow- I'm really glad I checked out the site this evening! I didn't know the theme had been posted (was out all yesterday celebrating my ...eeek... 30th). I've got an idea, and a hell of a competitor in Skya! Best of luck to you madame (not that you need it!).
As for the holidays, particularly Christmas, I take Supervike's approach and just try to be a little warmer to people. I work in a gaming store, so I see lots of lost moms this time of year, and just going a little further to help them figure out what they need brightens their day, and in return brightens mine.
I look forward every year to spending Christmas with my husband sitting on the couch and reading the books we've bought each other, watching Jimmy Stewart on the TV, and just being thankful that we've got each other.

Could *shock horror* smack talk be making a return to the IP??? Know tis the season of goodwill to all men, but go for the jugulars people!

Again, another cool theme, and a very hard one to get originality to IMHO, plus with so many different seasons, and as already touched upon, the seasons having different meanings to different people should be as difficult for the judges as the competitors.

Will be cool to see everyones takes upon it.

P.S- Duende- I have your ''you kicked my limey arse in round 1, have some ace mini's '' winners package here from rd 1 still, havent forgot! Will send it out to you between christmas and the new year.

OWWWWW-Broken pin drill ate part of my thumb! Stupid farging model.
On that- does anyone have a recommendation for a set of good pin vise bits? I'm tired of broken GW bits, and so is my hand.

Sorry to hear about the thumb; that sucks.

The drill bits I use I got from MicroMark (http://www.micromark.com/) and haven't had any problems with them at all, but I can't recall which ones they are off-hand (I'm at work at the moment).

Drill bits are listed on this page: http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Department&ID=181

Maybe something in there can help you.

We get ours from a certain Ace hardware...but we know of only one in the area that carries the small stuff so I think it's a hit or miss. Comes in a nice little metal case set.

DH - I think you've finally been pushed off the Iron edge. As you inserted swearing in there, I'll have to side with skya now. She's going to whip you wih weasel but fur, and hammer you down with her Iron artistic fist. (and I have to paint with her tonight, so I better cut my losses and go with the person I have to drive for 30 minutes with).

Skya- I aint afraid of this snow...are you? Movie is at 2, so I should be there by 4:30-5pm. We'll be at scott's before 6pm for sure.

You've got a friggin SUV if you were afraid of the snow I'd be disturbed. :P Timing sounds good to me.

Huzzah for weasel brush fur!

Ok, this is certainly a breakthrough: after 2 days of swearing and cursing I dumped my entry and started working on a new one. Conceptually much better BUT I have just a few days to complete it! Dang!

My original entry was Pile ou Face, an elven character from Chronicles of Black Moon, with two swords, one of fire, other of ice. I built up a base, the mini was supported on a jet of ice coming from the blade, cold blues and greens to represent winter and spring, browns and yellows for the second sword and summer and autumn.

quite a concept but it sucked so badly at 40% WIP that I dumped it. Oh well. It seemed to go smooth for 4 rounds...

Brushmistress - I use the Dremel drill bit set. The 3 smallest sizes are the most common sizes of brass rod. The set usually runs about $9 or so and you can get it almost anywhere that sells Dremel accessories. (Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart, etc.)

man, great entries, I'm giving myself a couple days to let them each sink in, so I don't miss anything or judge to hastily, but I plan to get my scores in tonight or tomorrow at the latest.

I've uploaded a pic of my IP4 Rd5 entry in the members gallery sans photoshopped forest for those who requested it. Enjoy!

Huh, I click on teh member's gallery link in your info above your post and the only piece I'm seeing is King of Cimmeria. Am I looking in the wrong place?

I probably flipped a switch somewhere for the member galleries when I was setting up for the contest stuff (have to go through and set a bunch of stuff up so that it can't be seen, etc, etc). I'll mess with it here shortly.

In the meantime Brushmistress, you can put the pic in the 'I THINK I CAN' section of the IRON PAINTER...

http://wyrd-games.net/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=538

Then just link to it here on the forums.

No more submission are allowed in the 'official' IP thread, as I shut those off after the deadline passed.

@supervike- Thanks for the tip. No worries about it not going in the official gallery. This is just for those who wanted to see it sans forest background.

And... my votes are in! Damn, that was difficult... Everyone had their scores crammed into a very small interval in the upper regions. Still, I had to make some sort of distinction between them. Well, it was really fun seeing these entries which truly are of astounding quality!

Haven't had time to breathe this week, but I'll get them in shortly! Just a little at a loss still how to say one is better than another when it's all such good work! I suppose that's not a horrible problem really :)

No worries at all...normally it wasn't until this evening that they were due anyhow, so you are well within the acceptable time frame.

But, those IPers may think differently!
