And the contest rolls on!!

Some damn fine painters got knocked out last round...

But right to it, huh...

Here are the RANDOMLY Selected matchups (random.org)

Seven matchups to tantilize you!!: Stubbdog returns as the well deserved 'Hey Gimme another Chance' contestant.

Thryth vs Skya
Morf vs. Wren
Beezlebrush vs. Slidedog
Brushmistresss vs Youngwolf7
Stubbdog vs Skrivanek
Bexley vs. r2j1
Dragonforge vs Demonherald

Oh man!! There are some fantastic pairings here!!

and now, I am sure, you'd like to know the theme of this wackiness?

Fine...again randomly selected from my 'master list' is...

Seeing Red

The theme is all about using incorporating RED into your theme. How you do that is completely up to you. Have it as the dominate color, a small but significant color, a humorous take....again up to you! Remermber though, pleasing the judges is vitally important...and as Stubbdog can testify, doing well in "theme" can make or break you!!

DEADLINE is

Sunday, the 25th of November, 6 pm CST

Will Skrivanek survive another round, or will Stubdogg capitilize on the new chance he has gotten?

r2j1 finds himself here dispite a lackluster last round, can he stop Bexley and that new camera of his?

It seems Skya got her groove on, but will Thryth be able to stop it?

Who will will the battle of the "d" names Dragonforge or Demonherald? I just know I wouldn't want to be in the middle of it!!

All that and much much more will be decided in this Round 3 of the 4th Iron Painter, which begins....

NOW!

Some interesting match-ups. I have an idea for the theme, but I wonder how it will work out.

Good luck to everyone in this round and I'll see you all from the "I think I can" section!

Tough theme, tough matchups.

You didn't think this was the 'paper mache'' Painter, I hope....LOL

PLEASE keep in mind, contestants...that there is another 'Hey, Gimme another chance' award at the end of this round. But, wouldn't you just be better off beating your opponent straight up???

Argh!

Well, it's been fun. No chance that I will beat Skya, though. That second-chance thing sounds promising. :)

Skya, you can send me your address now if you would like. Any preferences on type of miniature? Do you mind if it is already cleaned and primed?

(BTW, I never claimed Iron. I remain: Thryth, the Zinc Miniaturist :) )

PS: I have no idea what I am doing for this round, but it sounds like a good theme.

Thats the beauty of this whole thing. Folks get pushed out of comfort zones, and sometimes cool things happen!!

It seems like in almost every previous incarnation of the contest, someone found themselves deep into the rounds, and wasn't quite sure of how that happened.

Yep your right Jeff Style points mucho needed .. I am ready for this one .. Just got about 12 different red paints ..Now to think how to pull off something that'll die down the fires of the Forge...
As mentioned already it's like a Kung Fu Film Title...I shall quench your Dragon style with my Demon Fu

I will bow my head and give you extra Kudos right now for trying to tie the guard into this one... It's the least I can do as I would hate to put you out of the competition without so much as a corteous bow....

Well it's put up or shut up time for me, I need to rally. I have a really cool idea, but I'm not sure if the mini I want to use can pull it off. I'll have to examine it when I get home. I might have to come up with another one.

Beezlebrush, you've had superior scores and I'll admit to you being a better painter, but I am great under pressure and I have the iron to face-off with you. I'll give it what I've got and may the most iron win. Now to find the killer idea that will impress the judges... and figure out some most excellent bribes.... and flattery... and somebody to come by and put extra mold lines in your mini... and foul your paint....:vb_devil:

Hey, I said I'm good under pressure, but I'm not above throwing the fix in...

Good Luck all and I hope the sense of relaxation pervading me after my Jamaican Vacation keeps the good vibes flowing and the blending smooth. Every little ting be Irie Mon!

Wow, DH, you better pull something off here! I can't have you beaten yet! You have to win! How can I live with saying "I was knocked out by a third round loser?" Jeff, nothing personal. This is business. Get the second highest score this round like I did before and you too can say "I was knocked out by the winner!"

And me? Well, this Number 1 Loser will...will...oh heck, I'll just sit here quietly and paint, then upload and sigh very loudly from the sidelines--seems I'm seeing red....but red has been a part of every mini I've painted in the last 6 months. I can do this...yes I can, cuz it doesn't matter a hoot what I do...wait...um, somehow I'm missing the motivation today. (SIGH)

Man, I have had 2 ideas come to mind. Problems...

1st idea really isnt doable at all with miniatures, or at least not without some heavy conversions and couldnt do that within the timeframe. Too bad I cant sculpt worth a darn.

2nd idea requires minis that I dont have and probably would not be able to get in a timely manner. Thats what you get whn you are a gamer first, and then get a theme that doesnt really fit any of your gaming minis, and a wife that doesnt really want you to go buying any new minis.

Heck. There is my red... Maybe I will just shrink a photo of my wife and hang it on an imaginary wall.. Thats all the red I need... LOL...

Can anyone sculpt up a couple of minis real quick like for me?

I need one of me sitting in front of my computer and what my expression would be while looking online at my bank account.

The second mini would be my wife and what she would look like if she were standing behind me looking over my shoulder....

What he said (I've had this happen before when superglue dripped onto the paper towel I wipe my brushes on). All is not lost.

Take your favorite brush conditioner (I use Mona Lisa "Pink Soap" for this) and leave it in the brush for a couple of days before rinsing. It will undue any damage caused by the superglue and acetone.

And for some reason, this ONLY happens to new brushes.

I was thinking about the infrared thing too, but the best I came-up with was glowing red binoculars. I don't think that's going to cut it. I started with 20+ ideas, and currently have it down to 6 (and only one of them involves more than one miniature). Hopefully I will start painting soon. :)

I've settled on an idea, prepped some, sculpted some and am mid-prime. I haven't bought a new can of my spray primer for a few years until recently as I more often brush prime, and so far it seems thin, almost runny, so I'm waiting to see if the priming has actually worked...

Had a great weekend working over mine entry, if things go well, I might be able to post it next weekend.
It is the first time I am fully happy and enjoying how the things are coming, maybe because I am back to my favorite painting style/genre.

And I just realized, this is the first time I am painting a Reaper miniature in my life...

Well, I have gone thru a few different ideas that I really liked, but then over the weekend, I had an edict handed down by she who must be obeyed. After looking at the status of my bank account (with only $25 in it) "Thou shalt not purchase any new miniatures for this contest, but have to work with the miniatures you own..."

So, after some moaning and groaning, I gave in to the powers that be, and had to trash my ideas, and fall back on a make do plan since none of the ideas that I had involved minis that I own.

So, I will go ahead and share a couple of the ideas that I had which I will not be working on..

1. Playing off of Alice in Wonderland "painting the roses red", I was going to have a team of sci fi laser rifle guys, but instead of shooting lasers, they would basically be highpowered paint spray guns. as gonna build a little ladder scaffold system up to fake flower and have them painting away, with a couple of sergeant type characters in the back to check up on them.

2. Same as above but using dwarf spearmen with their spears changed into big paint brushes.

3. And idea about the red light district... there is a miniature from either Hasslefree or Heresy, cant remember right now where is a gentleman kinda in shock and confusion scratching his head.. was gonna get him and have him looking in the window where a pole dancer or the like was gonna be there enticing him.

I had some others but those were my favorite at the time.. but alas, none of those will get done by me cause I dont have any of the minis necessary do any of those...

So, I looked thru my minis I do have, and trying for the make do plan on this one. I found something thatI think will turn out ok if I can pull it off. It will have me stretching in two areas that I have never really tried before so win or lose will be good for me. Gonna have to do a bit of actual sculpting with my greenstuff and a good deal of freehand work. So, the challenge is on for me.

I spent a couple of hours prepping last night, should be able to prime a good portion tonight and work on that sculpting.

Good luck to everyone else in their ideas this round. Hopefully, you wont have as many restrictions as I do.

Heres a question.. are we all getting to hung up on the "Seeing" part of "Seeing Red" as the instructions are...

Just a thought..its bugging the hell out of me to.. and Id hate a misinterpretation of the title screw everyone up..

Oh well Ill be "seeing" what I can do too :P

Depends really. Look at some of the interpretations of 'Paint It Black'. Some took the traditional route, others went off the wall (and it paid out for them). Just comes down to the job completed and how the judge(s) interprets it.

I have to admit its themes like these that I find the most interesting because, I for one, don't have a clue what I would do myself if I was to paint this theme.

It is a little tricky. My original idea was to do a red eyed tree fron wher the only red was they eyes so they would really draw the eye. I have had a MSB warrior frog for awhile, and I just love the sculpt, but the eyes just weren't big enough to pull off the effect needed to was going for. So I started sorting through my other minis, and while I could have just painted them red schemed, none really felt particularly suited to the theme.

Then, just as I was nearing the end of my "pile o' minis" and was starting to despair of not having a good idea I stumbled upon my Wyrd Imp set. They fit perfect. I'm going to do a little vignette with all 3 each in a different shade of red. So thats my plan. I built them this weekend (no easy feat), and will start painting this week.

Well the only off the walls really was the goobo painting "IT" black..the rest were just black figures or black cloths.

it's a real tough cookie to get theme right but I have a few thoughts one with no red used at all....but relies on judges knowing what I am showing which means some very careful planning ..... I can see all of us seeing red through blood shot eyes at the end of this one...

After much head-scratching and playing with puns based on the word red, I finally settled on a literal interpretation of the theme. This will be a massive undertaking though. Hopefully I can pull it off in 2 weeks. I can't pull any punches this round, not up against Brushmistress. She'll pummel me if I don't give it all I've got.

I have to admit that I'm not a fan of the colour ones. Paint it Black was the round I DNFed on last IP. (Not because of the theme, because of wanting to enjoy the vacation I was paying for instead of hunching in a hotel room painting. :->) My idea for that one was to try and paint a bunch of surfaces other stuff we call 'black' but which aren't really, so to paint for the black round using no black paint for a base coat.

This one I had three ideas for. The first was the thought that the judges will be eagerly anticipating some blood-thirsty interpretations of the theme, which is not really my style. The second was what I thought the most obvious meaning of the exact wording of the theme, but I'm not sure it is now that everyone's going on about night vision goggles and other stuff I never thought of. The last is something I also thought was really obvious but no one's mentioned yet, so I'm going to keep it under my hat a little while long. I'm trying to combine ideas two and three.

I think I've got the mini I'm using down - going to introduce some Sci Fi this round with some Infinity Yu Jing.

Although, my biggest barrier to completion right now may be all the stupidly good console games out/coming out. Guitar Hero III has been eating into my time - then there's Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect (looks so good I've taken a couple days off work to play it), and Super Mario Galaxy. It's a crazy month for video games.

Don't you just LOVE/HATE it when that happens? I had something similar happen. I am still going with my final idea that I resigned myself to a couple days ago after the edict handed down from my wife. But, as I was finalizing the basing setup last night just before priming, a couple more things popped in and decided to occupy my visage of what the piece should ultimately look like...

The idea is starting to get really cool and I am really liking it.... BUT... the more cool the idea is getting, the more work is being added and the days are less and less... so my current status is AAAAAUUUUUUUGGGGHHHH

So, I am currently guessing that I will have to paint roughly 3-4 hours every day to get the thing finished in time. Partly due to the fact that I am a very slow painter. Now, lets just hope I can get the physical objects to look like what my brain's idea of them is thinking.

Which frog do you have? the one clinging to the bamboo? I love that sculpt. I have not bought it yet, but have just been waiting for the right excuse to do so. And funny enough that was the first mini I thought of related to this contest, but couldnt figure out how to get it to work right. And then came the non purchase edict from the wife and made it a moot point anyway..

I've never had any problems with Fantization service. I admittedly do not keep particular track of how long things take to arrive, but it's never been a length of time to start me being worried. On one occasion I ordered some paint, and when they pulled it from the shelf they noticed all the bottles had gone chunky. He called me on the phone to ask if I wanted to switch to another product or wait until they could try to get it in from another supplier or what, he was really thoughtful about offering me a lot of options.

I certainly wouldn't mind if they'd offer a bit more in the way of discounts, and that's just one of several reasons I also really miss FozzBozz. I've got no problem at all with the Warstore, but when it comes to Reaper and PP and so on, I'd just as soon run out to my neighbourhood store, which is very well stocked. What I want to be able to do online is order from the myriad of small producers. I just hate paying shipping, and won't do it if I only want one or three minis. I'll either order from someone who has a variety of stuff I want or just not order at all and wait for GenCon, or wait until there's a bunch of stuff I want from the same manufacturer, which depending on their product focus and speed of production, may never happen.

I was being a little coy at first, but now the lack of WIP on my end is more down to the fact that there hasn't been as much W as there should have been by now. And I broke the swivel on my main lamp. It doesn't make much of a difference for painting, but makes getting decent lighting on my photography set up very difficult I've discovered. I've got a replacement being shipped, I'm hoping it'll arrive in time for the deadline so I don't have to waste time fiddling with the broken one.

@Skya I'll see if I can post anything tonight (I'm sure that you'll be amused because...)

I was really hoping that the miniature I ordered for this contest would be here by this weekend, but that did not happen. This means that, at best, I will not be able to start on the miniature until Tuesday, but that is problematic as we are hosting Thanksgiving (and I actually pull my own weight in the kitchen for the event), which means limited time this coming week, so...

Not looking good, but I will try my best to not DNF.

I'm not quite as slumpy as some of the group (sorry to hear about the failed experiments and other frustrations people have been experiencing :-<), but there's a big part of me that just wants to be a lump in front of the TV or play some games or whatnot. I gained some extra time over the past couple of days while hubby was on a business trip which I'll lose in the next couple of days to appointments and Thanksgiving dinner, so I'm coming out pretty much even time-wise. I'm very grateful my new lamp has arrived already, I didn't even think about losing so many standard business days this week to the holiday when I ordered it. I'll try and get a WIP up later today.

Getting back in the groove. Decided I need to do Cyclops first so I could figure out stylistically what I'm going for before trying to beat the reds into submission and get them to do anything specific. So the blues are done, I'm about to start the blacks and then I'll go to the golds. Unfortunately my eyes are wonking out on me. I'll be fine focusing for about an hour, hour and a half and then I just wont be able to focus and I'll have to take a half hour break. I put my glasses back on and it take ten minutes for the world to stop warbling, not exactly conducive towards good painting. Hopefully it will turn out ok and I wont end up with me having been painting something that looks entirely different to everyone else.

I dug it out fo the trrash. I think I will take pictures romorrow.sucky thing is, aside from the @$%@# filigree, it was turning out as one of my best minis yet. The reds were spectacular, despite hwp hard a color it can be to paint. As mush as I want to nevr see the stupid thing again, I think I'd be better off finishing the thinmg off instead of quitting.

I'll posyt em and ask for tips on the filgree. Maybe I just need to set it aside for a few months- i think that the figure was just beyond my cirrent abilities. even paitnign teh trim slowly, it wasn't turning out taht great.

Sorry for the typos, still a litlle bizzed fom the consoolation booxing. :)

Sounds (reads?) like you got pretty consoled! I'm sorry that the filigree wore you down to that extent, but I'm happy to hear about the salvaging. I think the idea of putting it aside for a time and coming back to it is a good one.

Bexley
11-25-2007, 11:51 PM
I wanted an greenish-ivory color, to contarst with the reds. I painted ALL of teh filigree black first, with the intention of painting just the top edge ivory, so that it would be neatly defined by a black between the ivory and red. Paintinmg it balck went smoothly- it took way longer than I had anticipated, but it looedk really good. But if I thinne dthe ovory enough to flow well, it tended to run off the filghree and then all along the dge of it by capillary action. But if I kept the paint thick enough to the prevent that, it went on all globby and ugly. Maybe I should have painted it ivory first and then super carefully lined it, but that seemes like the wrong approach, and probably even more time consuming than the one I chose.

I don't know. This'll make mor esense with pictures and sobriety/.

Wren
11-26-2007, 01:14 AM
Your approach sounds good to me, I think painting ivory and lining filigree would be a nightmare I'd not soon volunteer for! I find different brands of paints or even different colours within a brand can have radically different 'feel's or requirements for thinning enough to achieve flow - maybe do a test with a couple of other colours/brands? Another way which might be too time-consuming to bother with is to first go over the top edge with white or another lightish paint you find covers well without going runny and then do the ivory over that?

Squig

Bexley
11-26-2007, 05:13 AM
Well, the problem isn't with coverage- even thinned it covered just fine (yay P3). Where the filigree was more pronounced it went on okay. It was just where the filigree was particularly fine or barely raised off the surface. You know when you paint a wash into a corner, and the paint flows all along the corner on its own by capillary action? On the finer bits, if I went off the top of the filigree even just a hair, the paint would do that, and run all up along and around the filigree. The only way I could seem to avoid it was to keep the paint thick, but then it went on really rough and bumpy (which is why you normally thin the paint.) It still covered fine, it was just, well, painting fine lines with really thick paint.

Maybe I just haven't developed the kind of brush control I need to do this one. I'll give it another go in a day or two, and if I'm still having trouble, I'll just come back to it in a few months.

I might also try skipping the blackline effect altogether, and just paint the trim entirely white. Maybe I can get away without it and it'll still look decent.

@ Bexley - I remember having the same problem with filigree some time ago. I think I solved it by painting the top colour first and then to get the outline I painted clean water with a drop of glaze medium around the edge. The paint can then be touched against the clean wet area and it spreads itself (by capillary action as you mentioned). I found the colour tucked itself nice and close to the filigree. It may take a couple of coats but I think it should work.

I might give that a try. I was looking at the studio master for the Red Lioness (which is actually sitting on my desk right now- how cool is that?) and it does have a fine black line between the filigree and the rest of the model. It looks as though it was painted by the method I attempted, but I can't be sure.

Seriously, though, I was so sleep deprived by that point that maybe coming at it with a full night's sleep will make a big difference. It probably didn't help that I was trying to rush it, too. I woke up at 7am, and thought, "well, all I have to do is the filigree and the sword and I'm done. Should wrap that up by 2pm easy, then finish off the base by 5pm and snap pictures." By 3pm, I had managed to just finish painting the initial black, and still needed to do the Thrall Flesh and highlighting.

I think I am just going to set a goal of painting one armor plate each evening. Then it won't be overwhelming, I won't get the urge to bail on it, and I can also work on DNF entries.

But first I'm going to paint some nice easy Space Marines, with big ol' thick easy-to-paint shoulder trim.

Congrats all - there are some very good entries.

An now, for a tale of Iron Painting:

I was all geared up to have the whole week and even a couple days off to work on my figure. I was slammed at work the first week and only had time to do the prep work and prime the mini (a Hac Tao for the Yu Jing faction in Infinity, for those who've asked).

Then painting-disaster struck - a last minute trip to California (I'm in Maryland) where I'd be leaving directly from work Tuesday to go to the airport. No chance of taking the mini and paints with me - there'd be no time.

So, I catch the redeye back Saturday night/Sunday morning, get in at 6:00 a.m. and drive to have breakfast with my aunt and uncle who were in town for Thanksgiving but leaving that day (I hadn't seen them at all). Get out of breakfast at 10ish and then settle in to paint. I am not a fast painter to begin with, so I was really feeling the crunch.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my mini, from a gaming standpoint - but it is not a show piece, I don't think. The background color was unfortunate, but I didn't have time to setup a grey background (which would have been ideal) - so it was either Red or Blue and I figured Red would be the lesser evil (and hell, it fit the theme - you can't help but see Red when you look at my mini!).

Now that I have time, I can also do the full idea I'd had, which was the lioness facing off against a Master of Carnage. I scrapped the MoC for time; now I can do the full scene as I'd originally intended.

If only I'd opted to scrap the Lioness and keep the Master... But since the theme was "red" it made more sense (at the time) to keep the Red Lioness. I might not have done as well in theme, but I'd have done a lot better than not finishing at all.

and its NATHAN!!!

But, just to let you all know...>I have to work NIGHTS this week (except for today) so the timing may be a little askew...I'll do my best to keep us all regular and on schedule...just an FYI.

Given that Nathans always the last one done we just might actually get an early judging this week. That'd rock.

Just projecting into the future after EricJ said his would be in tonight. Just pushing and prodding and being generally annoying...:wavey:

Sorry, can't do the judging tonight... I am suffering from a really bad cold since last week and I am still pretty weak from it. Today I also had to go to work, so now I'm feeling pretty knackered. But, I will do my judging tomorrow, that's a promise! Sorry to keep you on the edge.

Take your time, I was fighting a cold while I was working on this entry, it was a b*tch. Headaches, shakes, general yuck. Couldn't concentrate well. We're looking for considered scores not through the fog of a nasty head cold, get better soon.

We'll wait patiently... tap, tap, well OK we'll wait, maybe not so patiently but with understanding of your pain. Lots of fluids!!! ... uh, without alcohol...

The worst thing for me is constant nose bleeding! I've stood hunched over the sink with blood litterally pouring out of my nose five times allready tonight. :(

Youch that sucks. I get bloody noses a lot too, very dry climate here. Not a single bloody nose while I was in the dampness of Jamaica (no cracks!), but as soon as I got back to the winter dryness of Denver, they started the minute I blew my nose.
