As a parent with children that get them all the time:
1. pinch your nose down low, not up high. And pinch it tight, not just hold your nose. You are trying to get it to stop and clot up some which is tough in the muous membrane area.
2. Use a cotton swab (an ear swab) and swab some vaseline in there. Dont do it too rough to re open the scab, but enough to lubricate. The main reason for nose bleeds is that the inside of your nose actually is too dry and cracking at the very thinnest regions of your skin, which normally when you have a cold you would think the opposite, but since you are taking medicines that are meant to dry up your nose they counter act your body. And with the added wearing from all the sneezing and rubbing it makes it much more liable to have bleed.

Thanks for the tips! I will try using some vaseline tomorrow. Sounds pretty logical to me.

Ritual, get some saline spray..sold in a bottle in most chemists/ pharmacy's. it helps moisten the membranes in your nose. If your taking cold meds its drying out your sinus. Short of that mix up some really salty water and bring it to a boil..pour some in a cup and breath in the warm vapors.

Also, make sure you have a humidifier in your house. It's amazing the amount of sinus infections/nose colds we cut down on, just by making sure the humidity level was good.
They are cheap and extremely effective.
You can boil a big vat of water on the stove, which does help, but makes your house very steamy....
You can even just put a big bowl of water on the table and leave it sit. Not quite as effective, but as the water evaporates, it moistens the air you breathe.

Thanks for the tips and well wishes everyone (except for uber... ;)). I'm feeling a little bit better today and so far I haven't had any problems with my nose. I did try putting some moisturising lotion in the nostril, so hopefully that will make things a bit better. Will do the judging later today after I have got a thing at work taken care of.

Plus depending on the lotion you get a lovely scent that stays with you for hours... :)
Glad to hear you are feeling somewhat better. Pretty darn quick recovery but it's amazing what a good nights sleep can do.

Poor Anders boo hoo, it won't wash with me! I want to see sick notes and real proof!
(Hehe, but i'v caught something aswell, so ended up leaving college, but spent all morning chasing up doctors for a bleeding sick note. I was sick INFRONT of the tutor, how much more proof do they need!?)

I can empty the trash can in the bathroom and photograph the pile of blood soaked tissue, if that's proof enough for you!
@slidedog
Yeah, but I've been recovering for several days. The peak was during the weekend and Monday.

Anders- Do you have a humidifier for your home? It could put some moisture back into the air and help keep your nose from drying out so quickly.
Vike - So can we expect the results up soon? It's Thursday and we're all dying here!

We have pretty humid air where I live as it is just by the sea. Makes it bloody cold this time of the year though... So, I don't think the humidity level is a problem. The lotion seems to work pretty well so far, though, as I haven't had any bleeding so far today.
And, Michelle, it's me holding everyone up here... Vike can't do anything until I've submitted my scores, which at this point, I have not!
Hope you continue to improve in how you're feeling Anders!

I was thinking of the Blazing Saddles version with bdages, but I did like UHF, silly stuff. and I had forgotten that that one really was a reference to Badgers!!!
Apparently the badges thing originates back in an old Humphrey Bogart western, "Treasure of the Sierra Madre"... who knew???
Thryth
11-29-2007, 04:27 PM
Actually, that was the only other reference that I did know (Treasure of Sierra Madre). :) I don't remember that in Blazing Saddles (another funny movie :) )
@Hinton Thanks. I thought that I might have been the only one.
