It's my first OSL too and honestly, I think it's mediocre at best. :(
Don't feel bad about your piece. If you've ever seen any of my models, you could note that OSL has never successfully made an appearance. I'm trying to deal with a too big diorama that's making me chain smoke & drink to much! :smokin:Of course one could argue that I did that before IP4. Maybe that's why my work rate is so slow...

I'm keeping the OSL pretty soubtle, this is a piece for my Rackham dwarf army after all and I want to be able to use him.

B.Mistress! I think I almost met you! I was at the Baltimore GD when that Slannishi Keeper of Secrets was entered. It was so cool I took a bunch of pictures of it that I no longer have. :( I just now saw it again when I looked through your CMON gallery. Gee, I wonder how far away from me you live anyway?
Also, nice IP WIP... I think I'm safer sticking to the jello wrestling match idea... ;)
Right now it's "The Broken Crown" By Michelle West.
Ali, let me know what you think of that book. I just picked it up myself at a used book store because it sounded interesting and I liked the cover art (yeah, great reason) and that the author's name is the same as mine also influenced it too probably... ;) I'm still finishing "Crown of Stars" by Kate Elliot.

trying out or working on techniques for the first time
Main reason I signed on this installment, I think I even convinced a few friends to join next time around.
The figures that I bought because I though they were cool are being painted, its a great motivation to think outside the box.

I've read it (and the whole series) before and I think it's great. Very enjoyable! I've also read the two books that are kindof a prequel (the hunter's whatchamacallit ones) and think they were really fun reading as well. I think of the whole series, the one with "shield" in the title left me feeling the most confused, but maybe a second reading will make it clearer. It's been a couple years since I've read it, and am finding it just as enjoyable the 2nd time through.
I think I first picked it up at a used bookstore because I thought the cover was attractive. Unless someone has recommended a particular author to me, or I've read a review someplace, I usually choose books by browsing through the fantasy/sci-fi section and getting whatever "jumps out" at me - at least to start, because I still read the back and the first page or two before I buy something..

I'm pretty much done, but it might take me the next three days to try to get a decent photograph of the thing and figure out if there's anything that needs refining. I rushed to get it done to enter in Reaper's Hallowe'en contest, and also because we're having a visitor this weekend and that'll eat time with housecleaning as well as entertaining. It's weird to be done early. Must be cool to be Jubilee and feel like this all the time. ;->

We have 'return to standard time' this weekend here in the states (not all states play along though). So, on Saturday night, we set the clocks BACK one hour.

11-04-2007, 07:32 PM
Well, figured out how to swap pictures since it was still before the deadline. So, new set of pics in there with some detail pics.
My competition is high, as is everyone's. Some awesome stuff in this round for sure. Have no idea how things will go in the judging, but I can say that I am very happy with how mine came out. 3 nights of painting til 4 in the morning to get things finished up paid off I think. Only a couple of minor things that I would do different if I did over again. Like instead of being a bottomless pit hole type thing down the well, I would have gone with some sort of rippling water reflection pool, but thats for another day, that I might go back and add to this one later.
Like most people I had a bugger of a time getting good pics in the beginning. I finally got some decent ones as long as I was staying far out, when I zoomed in, my camera kept focusing on the wrong things.
One thing that I would find interesting.. I think everyone should post pictures of there actual photo taking set up that they finally went with for this round. I will post some of those of mine later tonight.
Dragonforge
11-04-2007, 08:37 PM
As for my photo set up I used one bulb from overhead, but I taped a piece of tracing paper over the bulb to help diffuse the light. To kill the hot spot from the bulb I put a piece of duct tape in the center of the paper. About a 2 inch square. Worked nicely.
My back ground was a sheet of "Fun Foam" sold in Michaels..its dead flat in color and about $1.00 a sheet for a 11x 17 sheet.
Bexley
11-04-2007, 08:57 PM
I didn't actually have much of a problem. I had to reshoot two, as they were too close to the camera and so only part of the piece was in focus, but otherwise they turned out okay. I did the same as Dragonforge for lighting, except I used three lights and didn't use duct tape. I also kept the lights much farther back than I normally would, and then upped the exposure on the camera.
Jubilee
11-04-2007, 11:42 PM
I had my two side lights to either side of my light box and a goose-neck lamp placed in front of/below (vaugely where the light was supposed to be coming from) with some white vellum over it to diffuse. I didn't turn on the overhead light because the sheen on the wings was enough of a problem without an overhead light making it worse. And I used a black backdrop instead of the gray. :)
Yeah my backdrop was the little portable photo booth with white mylarish sides. The lights go above and to the sides, (and yes jeff I tried some spots to cut the glare) but I think what I really need is something with more of a flat black instead of the slightly shiny black stuff that was all I could find. I'll try taking some more pictures later in the week see if i cant improve on it, maybe poke Sue for some help. A good part of the problem was trying to get the light from the windows to look brighter then the light on the floor. Between the glare issues with the light on the floor (I glazed that back so many times there should have been no friggin white spots darn it) and the fact that the windows are, well... translucent the photagraphywas a loosing battle that I at least managed to come out from with something decent.

come on, it'll be fun commenting while drunk.
:vb_devil:
I don't think the painting world could handle it. I'm sober this morning, but as it's my birthday again today (the 6th) I must celebrate again! But I'll make some comments before I continue the birthday traditions...

combine it with the quality on show and it makes one of the best online painting comps out there...

So we looking at a Friday results again with new pairings and themes?

11-06-2007, 01:53 PM
I'm going to try to do much of my voting/commenting this afternoon, but since I'm going to comment on them all this round, it may take a few days :)
I've had a couple looks so far at them all to try to get my scale set in my mind for judging and am more than impressed. This round in particularly is some of the best painting I've seen in a comp since the days of Chick Challenge!

Yup, that seems to work out best, to have the announcement of the winners as soon as I can on Thursday, and ultimately the Friday announcement be the pairings and the themes! My job as the moderator gets increasingly easier each round. The painters and poor judges have all the hard work.

Tell me about it.. add that into my regular work schedule from dawn to dusk..all the work I do is miniature related.. Gah!

I celebrate every 3 days in November, except the 15th, which is my brother's birthday. It comes from, among other things, a horrible year of relatives not remembering what day my birthday was and I received cards every 3 days from someone or other. It's a bizarre tradition, but I like it and so it stays tradition. ;-)

Once the losers are out, all that is left is IRON! and that will never collapse...... unless they get rusty...

We aluminum foil balls don't rust, we just get more crumply.

not to mention incredibly fabulous miniature painters. and did i mention how wyrd miniatures mini line is better than anything anyone else has ever created..... in fact it definitely better than cherry flavored pez....and nathan and eric and anders are all incredibly gifted at voting high scores for people who have the name uberdark and darklord with perfect scores.
i think i covered it all dl.

Ok! I've submitted my votes to supervike! I also wrote comments on all entries, but to save me some time I wrote them together with the votes so you'll have to wait until Jim shows the individual votes before you can read them. It would have taken me much longer if I was to enter each comment the regular way.
It was difficult and there were many good entries. In fact, there were mostly good entries. I'm very impressed by how ambitious people are with their entries.
Hmmm, does this mean that it is Nathan everyone is waiting for again? :poke: :p:

They aren't lazy, they are carefully weighing their options and determining how to impart their wisdom in the least painful way while protecting themselves from the possibility of potential lawsuit from their constituents.

Short psychotic killers .. actually several of them, skull like nipple rings and wide birthing hips, insane hairdo and long nails and a very big shoulder of ice.
That should hold you for a couple of weeks.

Hey, I got this idea for IP 5, that would be a true revolution. How about gambling?
Betting painter's odds before and after they post the pics? Bet IP4 Winner right now!
Also, to make it even more fun, maybe introduce the "elimination tree system" so that you can see whom will you be potentially facing in round 1, 2, 3 and so on...
Ok, just a thought while we are waiting!
