Iron Painter 4..the Kickoff

Remember that this contest is an ongoing, evolving thing. I reserve the right to change up the rules to keep things fair. Being fair is very important to me.....

A new addition to the rules is the WYRD CARD. One randomly selected painter still needs to paint this round, but will not be matched up. In the event of pairings being disrupted by DID NOT FINISHers (DNF)...The Wyrd Card will be randomly matched with the painter who did finish. If there are no DNFers, the WYRD CARD essentially gets a bye, and moves forward to round 2. (provided they do actually paint!)

We also have lots and lots of new faces!!...Hopefully, many of you will be around long enough for me to mock....er, I mean get to know!

But, this is just the 'small talk'...should we get on with it?

The Dead of Winter

It just rains even more in the winter here.. hardly ever get snow (none last winter!). But at least on the rare occasions when we do get snow, everything shuts down and we get a day off at home!! ;)

OK, nothing too ambitious to start off with I think. Best to try and finish one decent model than fail completely in constructing an entire diorama for round one (even though I have a groovy idea for one).

Crazy stuff can start if... I mean when I get to the later rounds!

Nope not a blades fan. Only just moved to Sheffield, I live in Hillsborough but not a Wednesday fan either!

I was hoping for the theme "Something you've never done before" in which case I was going to finish a mini in two weeks :)

Should be an interesting match up, think you have the edge on me but I'm entering this to improve so we shall see.

Now to think of what to paint!

Sorry, was a bit pressed for time this morning, but wanted to mention a few things right off the bat!

Couple of things grabbed me in the matchups....

Paintminion vs. Demonherald!! whoa, thats a great one.

A few folks, like Hiliter and R.Crescentino have their work cut out for them...they drew returning IP champions Wren and Skya!! YIKES! Better bring the 'a' game.

The OrkyDave and Duende matchup should be a good one. Duende, fresh off her stint as a judge, faces seasoned IP'er OrkyDave....But Duende is no new comer herself!!

A word on the SMACK....if you please. It has become grand tradition to SMACK talk during the contest...in fact it is something we have encouraged. Obviously, it's all in good fun, means nothing, and shouldn't be taken as anything more than that. Except for the part about Dr.EvilMonkie, who chose not to participate, but he is still a weenie!!!

Callumrice and Beelzebrush!! Another matchup of past participants....both went into the deeper rounds too, if I'm not mistaken.

DragonForge has already started with the smack, but can an unknown Hash bring the goods?

r2-j1 vs. Hinton? Another matchup of folks that have been around. Who reigns supreme here?

Well, in contrast to Anders, I grew up on the beaches in California where Winter means Sunny and cool rather than sunny and warm. So if you go TOO wintery I'll likely just get confused.

Thinking it won't be the most 'original' of ideas for this round, but past experience has taught me to go with my gut instinct with the themes and stick to my guns.

I've figured out what my project will be . So I cleaned up the mini and primed it last night. My primed mini alone is more then enough to beat Hinton. But I guess I'll actually paint it proper too, just to hear the judges sing my praises.

I've come up with something fun for mine, but I can't find a model to use as the base for it. So I pulled out the GS and Brass rod and started the frame work...

Got all my bits and the model cleaned up last night and will put it together today. Tomorrow I will start painting...and I'll get my Dragon done, my Reaper Commission, AND my IP entry done in two weeks, cuz October 12-14 is the MMSI Chicago show!

And winter, dead of winter, describes my childhood in Wisconsin with snow so deep we tunneled through it to get to the cows. I've heard the ice cracking sharp and brittle on the lake every winter. I got my drivers license driving in a blizzard. I'm not afraid of winter. I may paint this wearing a scarf and hat and have my boots on though...

As for the dead...well, yeah, them I'm afraid of. If you don't pay attention to them and give them proper respect, they go and...rip your arms off...

Won't the boots get in the way as looking at your previous works you clearly paint with your feet:laugh:

No golden demon winner here... and no Altoid either. In fact, I've never even painted a mini specifically for a painting contest before... which will make it all the more embarrassing when you lose.

The skin is giving me trouble, it being such a TINY miniature and all.

To be honest, I think from past IP's it wasn't so much the 2 weeks of the painting that stressed folks, it was the week after, waiting for the judges to score and for the 'announcement' to be made.



Which brings me to another point. Smack Talk is fine when aimed at other contestants, observers, hell even judges. But, the highly important role of Contest Moderator should be immune from all smack-talkiness. Some of the more seasoned IPers will try to bring up that 'math' thing, but they are out of line, and really don't know what they are talking about, and it's very possible they are involved in some sort of lurid conspiracy. Progressing well. I have the base just about finished (couple of touch-ups and it should be "mini-ready").

Do half-minis (i.e. torso or legs) count as a mini? If so, I'll be using about 75 minis in an elaborate winter battle scene that covers an entire table with snow and blood and limbs aplently.

Or maybe I'm only using one mini on a 25mm base.

Maybe I'll DNF because my opponent is so much better than I am.

To be honest, I think from past IP's it wasn't so much the 2 weeks of the painting that stressed folks, it was the week after, waiting for the judges to score and for the 'announcement' to be made.



Which brings me to another point. Smack Talk is fine when aimed at other contestants, observers, hell even judges. But, the highly important role of Contest Moderator should be immune from all smack-talkiness. Some of the more seasoned IPers will try to bring up that 'math' thing, but they are out of line, and really don't know what they are talking about, and it's very possible they are involved in some sort of lurid conspiracy. Well, I got my idea yesterday, did a few sketches today on color schemes, and found one i think i will like. Now, just to try and make the paintjob match my idea. Will be able to go pick them up on Saturday.

Should be a fun test considering how fast the turn around at that point will have to be. At least the wife and kids are out of town for the weekend, so it means I might actually get to make more progress than I usually do.

As for taking pictures with out a tripod.. just rest your camera on a small box . It should be enough to stabilize it to take a picture..and well knowing your abilities a little bit of blur might improve it ! :ahhhhh:

But I will not be able to continue to round 2 even if by some strange quirk of fate I somehow managed to scrape through with an unthemed entry.

A good bit more has happened since my wip 5 or 6 hours ago. There is now a tree and some resin, also more gravel. Its just about ready to paint now, whilst I wait on the resin drying for another coat. Multi tasking is the key now, I just dont have time for things to dry! After i plastered the base with green stuff I had no time to let it dry before covering it with pva and gravel. I had no time to let that dry before covering it with roughcoat! Kinda had to let that dry before basing the model though but whilst waiting, undercoated and prepped the model. Telling you guys, Irons in my blood!

Well both my figures have paint on them. Changed the dwarf twice & the base is finished. I'll spend the week end marking some books for school then I'll finish the model in the wee hours of Monday. Coz I know I have to give my opponent a chance.

I managed to sneak in another 90 minutes last night. All that remains to do on the main piece is the staff and some minor details, seal, and then highlight the metals. Then she just needs to be mounted to the base and scenic details added. I hope steelcult is on track to finish! ;)

Seriously, don't feel too bad though, I DNF'ed out of the only other IP I was in (the first one) because of RL problems. Hope things improve for you and we see you in the next IP!

Finished the Mini yesterday. Had to drive down to my folks yesterday for various reasons and have been taking advantage of my mum's digital SLR today for the pics. Had a bloody nightmare!

Different backgrounds, different lights etc... guess you can't polish a turd :P

Cutting a mostly white image out of a white background has tested my patience to it's utmost extent!

My apologies for not being around much to join in the smack-talking and general silliness that helps make IP what it is. I'm crunched, but I'm not out yet, and have uploaded something to the WIP forum (http://wyrd-games.net/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=1730&cat=534). I'm not so great at the smack, but I'll toss in a little -

Hiliter, I'm sure you must be quaking in your boots at the thought of going up against an IP champ in round 1. Quake more, because I am an IP champ from the Great White North, I've got winter in my bones! Sure, you may think you have a chance because I wasn't even able to start working on this until the 7th or so, and I've still got some other distractions. Or because I've chosen to do some stuff that takes curing time and time I don't have much of. But you should probably just face the reality that your defeat is written in the snow.

Well, my entry is up. Guess maybe I should smack talk my opponent, but I'm just not up for it. I'm not happy with how it turned out and I'm really not happy that the photos aren't worth a damn.

Ever since I got into the hobby about a year ago, the one comment that I have always gotten is that my highlights need to be brought up, which is something that I've kept trying to do. This time, I took the highlights up to pure white. I showed the picture to someone and what was their first comment? "You need to bring the highlights up."

WTF?!?!? How can I go brighter than pure white?? :banghead:

That means that it's not my painting; it's my freaking camera! :cussing:

Since my camera is such a cheap POS, I guess I just can't get decent pictures. That being the case, I'm just not going to post any pictures anymore. That means no more contests, but it's fine. Maybe I'll save up for a decent frickin' camera that can actually take a frickin' picture without killing the highlights/shading.
