Hinton, in your photo program, see if there is an option for brightness or autocorrect. I think GIMP has that, and it is a free program.

Hinton, in your photo program, see if there is an option for brightness or autocorrect. I think GIMP has that, and it is a free program.

I have GIMP and I have tried that. Problem is, it kills the color when I do it and makes things worse. It's just that I have a crappy camera and I really have no knowledge of photography or camera settings or any of that. I've tried dozens of different settings, but nothing ever seems to come out right.

I think my camera might be auto-adjusting and it's flattening the picture in the process. You know, dulling the highlights, brightening the shadows, etc.

I'll start saving up to get a decent camera, although it'll take a while for that to happen.

Thanks for the input, though.

You might try photographing it outside, not in direct sunlight, then try a blue filter or the natural light filter. Or when you are done, just bring up the red concentration.

Yeah, about miniature photography, it may not be a matter of the camera you are using but just of getting enough light on your subject. You have to remember that while digital cameras are pretty versatile, they're not designed with mini photography in mind, and work better with more light coming off something larger.

I've had my best results from getting multiple bright lights pointing at the mini, and then covering them with kleenex to try and diffuse the light a bit. Professional mini painters will sometimes go so far as to build a diffusion box for photographing miniatures for better results. The goal is to flood your subject with light without creating harsh shadows.

Hmmm, 61 entrants and only 18 posts so far. Either everyone is waiting until the last minute, or we're going to have a lot of DNFers.

my old camera wouldn't stop auto correcting the lighting on minis, no matter what I did, so adding more lights usually just made everything darker.. stupid thing!

I did find that diffusing the light (putting tissues over the lamps) helped a great deal - the less harsh light made my camera less likely to darken the picture for me. Also, I found in the manual that it did have a setting to adjust how light/dark to make the picture (I think it's called EV?) and upping that number to like .7 usually helped some too.

Eventually I got a new camera, though. Best 300ish dollars I spent.

WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO! I finished mine.
Real life really waltzed through my last two weeks and I had no time at all (or energy or focus) to paint. But things have cleared up and yesterday and today I had two free days. I sat down and painted like a true insane Newsmonkey and behold...my entry is finished! I was very close to throwing in the towel...but then I remembered the REAL IP philosophy [enter Rocky music and training scenes] and sat down and went for it. And now she's finished...and it is a Wyrd entry.

Sounds like the same motions I went through Malebolgia. Good to know you pulled through as well.

Dont give up Hinton, I went through a stage where I was told I needed to highlight more and I had brought a lot of them up to white! I had someone explain it to me though and now it seems ok. There are a few reasons why it may not look highlighted enough and here are some I had.

My lighting sucked (still does) and it was too harsh for the photos (now I dont get enough lighting but that will soon be rectified with the delivery of my new light tent hopefully).

My camera was "blending" the colours, so that if I highlighted green to nearly white, it would mush it together and like you say, lighten the shadow and dull the highlight. Just slightly, but enough so that it didnt look highlighted. Thirdly, and this one helped me a lot, Start with a much darker colour than your used to. So if your going green, start DARK green, really dark. build it up from there. Also, and I dont know if you already do this or not, a guy from my ebay group told me, nigel, when highlighting, try not to highlight up to white, but a lighter colour. There is a reason for this and ill explain in a mo. For example if I was highlighting green I would go a mix between dark angels green and black, through camo green and from there start to mix in yellow. Maybe orange first, depending on what finish your going for, but finish the final edge highlighting with a mix of about 50 50 yellow and white. It makes all the difference, believe me. So rather than going straight white, use yellow, or ice blue for dark blue, or orange for browns etc and add the white to it as appropriate. Works for me. Reason its best not to highlight up to white all the time is that it tends to become "chalky" and gives a chalky appearance to the mini. (cheers for this one Nige!) This in effect means you lose the highlighted effect cos all the colours you highlighted have been up to white.

Just dont give up posting pics!

Yeppers! That's me! Well, at least I thought it was amazing...

And come on over here and say that, Mr. Dragon Forge(t)! I not only finished my Iron painter piece, but finished Anwyn and a huge dragon for the MMSI show and I got a silver medal! (doing the happy painter dance).

And sure, kneel, my Minions! Bring on the judges! Let's all party now!

Hi Hinton

I've just rigged up a 'light box' to try & improve my photography. I have a cheap, crappy point & push digi camera which does have a macro setting & some white balance (although it lists it as different lighting from daylight through overcast & flourencent lighting to light bulbs).

Here is a picture of my set up.
http://www.eldintux.co.uk/images/photoalbum/9/light_box.jpg
The frame is just some cheap 1" by 1/2" beading. A back board was attached (MDF) then plain white A4 paper was put over the frame. A desk lamp with a daylight bulb is used to shine light into the box through one of the sides.

I'm not saying my pictures are fantastic but they are a definite improvement.

Next step is to get another one or two lamps, one for the other side & the other for the top. The paper diffuses the light so reduces shadow.

I then use Gimp to auto adjust the colour balance.

Hope this helps

Hinton
10-14-2007, 10:08 PM
It is high, but I really was expecting about half of the entrants being a DNF. I'm not saying anything against anyone, just figured the more entrants there were, then the more DNFs there would be. I'm sure the judges aren't too heartbroken about it; 18 fewer for them to judge.

(P.S. Where do I send my mini or cash?)

Ugh. I don't know about iron, but I had plenty of congeners in me while I painted. I was drinking gin, too, which usually doesn't give me the head-poundies the next day. It didn't help that I was super sick on two of the days I'd set aside for painitng. All in all, though, I'm pretty happy with my entry. A very nice selection of miniatures up for this theme - thanks to all of you who took the time and for you DNF'ers out there, life happens, but show us a bit of Iron by putting up what you do/did have in the WIP so we can see what you were working on.

Well done all, going to hate seeing some of you not carry on to the next theme as there are a few of you paired up that are, to me, equally good, but I'll just have to get sadistic and watch some of you putz's fall to the wayside.

Yeah I did the same thing, but it was because I was uploading in the middle of the night after an insane day at the MMSI show and I hadnt gotten any sleep all weekend. I figure I'll just go back in and add the info I would have done in the comments.

I'm really enjoying wading through the entries though. I'd wanted to do a WW2 guy frozen in with someone leaning over him and it's good to see that the emotional impact of the scene I wanted to do came across in a couple of the other pieces people did. I can only blame myself, I had about 5 days out of the 14 to paint for this round, what with going out to Seattle, and coming back with too many things to get done before the MMSI show. It was worth it though. I'm happy with my piece I did end up with, and the show this weekend was amazing. I'm going to go and post some of the pieces I had up now.

I think if skrivanek was going to be classified as a DNF, the entry would have been removed. Speaking strictly for myself, I would rather lose to an entry that was a little bit late than advance because my opponent DNF'd.

JakubT should be bolded. He has the "Ghool King" entry.

Even though skrivanek was an hour or so late, I'd say be lenient and allow it *this time* since it's at least one less DNF (and more work for the judges, *nyah, nyah*). But let it be a warning for future rounds, Irons Painters are expected to be punctual!

:)

YoungWolf7

That's why I posted that I wasn't sure if it was being allowed or not. I also figured it would have been removed if it was DQ'ed.

So 4 complete pairings DNF.
8 other DNFs.
WYRD Card DNF.

44 (or 45) entries.
17 (or 18) DNFs.

Roughly a 72% participation rate. Pretty good for an online competition. :)

I think skrivanek's post will stand, although it was technically late. I couldn't figure out how to stop the uploads at a certain time, but that is neither here nor there. Ow. I'm very glad that I was able to finish, and that my opponent was as well. Having been whacked by another driver on my way to lunch a couple of weeks ago, I've spent a good portion of the last two weeks on Vicadin, and with limited 'sit upright' time, because of back and hip injuries (no broken bones, just bruises and pain. Oh, man, the pain). I'd love to continue participating, and leave it to the judges, but I suspect that 'get well' time (and more George RR Martin) is better. I also have to finish an army for Baltimore GT (in two weeks) and that'll need my remaining 'upright' time.

Therefore, I feel it best for me to concede my match to Jack, as it were, since it would be best both for me, and for all concerned in the contest. But let it be known that I did finish an entry..of that I'm proud, at least.

Now, I head back to Vicadin-land. I'll keep up with the contest and will give out some form of prize to my favorite entries in future rounds. I'll think of a name at some point, just not now. Now I must sleep. Again.

6. The LOSER (sorry so harsh) will be asked at that point to send to his or her victor, one miniature. If you would rather save the time or effort from sending a miniature from your collection, $5 dollars (American) through Paypal is also acceptable should you wish.

So if both in a match DNF'ed, do they send each other a mini or $5?

(just curious) :)

Well, Vytis, you've all the makings for a true IP! Gets clobbered, and still finishes....I'd hate to see you concede!

Just to clarify, if you were a DNFer and your opponent was not....PLEASE be responsible and pony up your fee(otherwise it comes out of my pocket!)

If you and your opponent both DNF, then obviously you don't need to do anything. BUT....
We have already had a DNFer come forward and still offer to send his 'fee' for part of the Pool Prize. His opponent was also a DNF. Much appreciated!! Thanks Goblyn13.

ALL entries will be scored, regardless of what the opponent did. In fact, I don't think the Judges even bother looking at the matchups, they just score each one appropriately...it's up to your friendly neighborhood moderator to figure that part out.

Going over the list:

There were 30 pairings and 1 WYRD card for a total of 61 people.

If everyone finished then we would have 31 people or 15 pairings and 1 card.

Even though there were a bunch of DNF people out there, there were only 4 where both players DNF,

Illustrange vs. goblyn13
Zly vs. Vanth
deguello vs. Weirdoboy
Lono vs. Huronbh

therefore 30 - 4 = 26 people left = 13 second round pairings

It's great when we all try to do the maths that don't really matter...poor vikey...and the judges at least here it's just looking at that list without having to mark everything....my original working out was on the laptop on a train so I missed some of the bold print...
heres how I reckoned it......

43 finished.....
8 0f those with DNF opponents.....go through.
leaving 35....17 pairs and 1 wild card.
17 beaten with iron sticks
so 26 go through...13 pairs......

not that any of it matters guess it's just easing curiosity while the judges do their bit...

if that's right maybe it explains it to those curious..if it's wrong..well that's why I don't run these things....

now if the wild card was DNF that throws the nice ven numbers out so is a nearly there called in from this round??? i.e after the DNF's and winners from pairs go through the highest scoring left sneaks in to make up numbers......Just thought I'd throw more confusing thoughts in the mix....

Since there was confusion about it, I will err on the side of caution and let it go. Sorry Sculpta if you disagree. In the future, I will attempt to get uploading cut off at the deadline time.

MODERATORS NOTE:

In an effort for fairness, I am having the judges look at this situation and give me their opinions. Sorry skrivanek if I have misled you. I will have a ruling soon.

Now since I don't personally know all the painters who signed up.. but just looking over the names, it seems to me not one of the DNF'ers were female. Just goes to show, us lady painters have more Iron.

Maybe you boys should just drop out now and go back to playing with your little soldiers rather than trying to paint them.

Damned skippy Duende! We're going to destroy the boys this year.

Duende/Brushmistress: All part of the plan- we're hoping for two chicks in the final round. Everyone knows girls can't playfight without it turning vicious. I heard that Wyrd is bringing Joey Styles to call the match.

2 Chick in the final - the men fall into 2 camps on that one. You either love the catscrap or hate it on grounds that women can't really do anything right, we just let them play every now and again.

OUCH! Yes dear I won't say anything like that again dear.

Hold it!!

Now, I don't want to turn the IP into some sort of battle of the sexes.

Unless of course there is a chance for bras and panties to be ripped a bit, the two women huffing and puffing as they hold on in a brutal scrap....then maybe one plants a gentle kiss and a caress, the other is apprehensive, yet receptive.....

um...I'll be back in a little while, I've something to take care of...

On Thursday (or possibly Friday morn) I will have all the rankings, judging and fall out in a shiny new thread (called something like Round 4 RESULTS)

Then, I'll have another shortly following announcing new matchups and a new theme!

I'm usually the last to get my votes in, proven fact from the last three contests. I'll see if I can fit time in there to do comments as well.

Also, just goes to show, particularly for some of that are starting this up for the first time, that photography and the like is just as important a factor to take into consideration as is the painting and to leave time for that. Go early and then laugh at all the fools scampering to get caught up. Wait a bit and figure you'll have plenty of time on the last day and then you find yourself going 'WTF, my car broke down, the significant other wanted some nookie (who is going to pass that up) and somehow I managed not to finish. Crap!'

Mind you ... nookie is a good reason not to complete, particularly if you have two weeks filled with that. We might even give you a pass for that ..

EricJ
10-16-2007, 01:55 PM
I would give top marks if you could prove that the reason for not finishing was 2 solid weeks of nookie

And while I'd like to comment on each one while scoring, I just don't think I have the time, however, after the fact feel free to ask why I scored something one way or another, I'm happy to answer. As the field gets smaller, I will go back to commenting on every one as I score.

And nathan, would you just like me to CC you my scores... you know, so can copy/paste and be done fast ;)

After discussing this with all parties involved, and the judges, I've decided to let skrivanek's submission stand. It was technically late, I couldn't stop it from being uploaded, so gave the impression it was still ok.

I will, however, be more diligent in shutting down uploads at the deadline time (something I didn't know how to do then).

The contest is more about the spirit of fun than hard and fast rules. Had this been in the later rounds, I may have thought differently. I apologize if this rubs people the wrong way....

Im more into getting comments than winning anything (would be nice though) cos I like to know what people think about how im painting. Criticism is warmly received (is it ever??!) so dont be shy.

I think Ive commented on most if not all.

Sorry, I just figured it was a given, that folks were doing this. Please do. I encourage it completely. Being a community painting event is what the IP really stands for.

No, and for the record... I only looked at the pictures that were posted in the gallery! Photographing your entries is part of the competition, and consequently should be done before the deadline. Photos that were taken later should therefore not be considered when judging. That is my point of view, at least.

Yup, all votes are in (yes, I'm almost always the last to finish) and Jim has the stage now. I'm sure he'll do his thing here shortly and everyone will have their results today and be ready for the next theme come tomorrow.

Let me also say that all of us judges have pretty much agreed that we only go with the photo that is presented within the gallery as taking photographs and doing the composition on them is part of the process.

Some of ya'll have thrown up some pictures after the fact that are MUCH better than what you initially submitted and it would have gotten you better scores from all of us I'm sure, but that's part of the 'Iron' in IP. Do yourself a favor, leave some time for photography, set yourself up a decent photo station with a background, and if you don't have photoshop, go and get GIMP (Google it) as that'll help you out here. As you know by now, only one picture is accepted, not multiples.

We also don't look at the match ups between folks or do the whole favoritism thing though I've seen a few PM's from time to time from disgruntled folks. Anyone that has done this judging thing, much less taken the time to comment on all the entries, will know that this takes HOURS to accomplish and as a group we pretty much start at the beginning and work our way back through the entrants, making our marks and going from there.

As much as I want every last one of you to pass along, some of you aren't and that sucks the big one. Matter of fact, I actually 'do' know of one match up because it stuck with me when I first read it three weeks ago and I said 'oooh, that's going to be a rough one'. Either way though, I wish the best of luck to each of you and hope that you have enjoyed putting yourself through heck for painting sake.
