Not sure what the Iron Painter is? In a nutshell. Painters randomly matched, theme randomly chosen, 2 weeks to paint, panel of Judges score, winners move on, losers cry themselves to sleep. Repeat until there can only be 1!

As far as the Banner goes, yeah that is Illustrange's fine work. We've had it for a while, just waiting for the right time to present it. I really dig the art, adds just the perfect attitude to the contest. We can thank Nathan for getting that arranged!

or wether my paint isnt dryed up at all (I have about 8 bottles vallejo, bought 2 years ago :))
but then again it would be a nice motivation to get some painting done.

edit: before people think *what only 8 bottles !?* I had a grand collection of citadel paints (the older fliptop ones)
but when I looked at them they seemed to have turned into evil goo monsters, everyone of them.

(But yea seriously, 2nd year of study. You try applying the Fibonacci sequence to a modular grid deconstructed on a hierarchy. Not easy.)

Hello! The painting slump I'm in right now has gone on far too long. I need to do something to try and get myself on track. This is probably the most psychotic way possible to try and turn it around, but OK, put me down as an entrant. Ok Could someone care to explain the ground rules as simple as possible.. from what I can gather we are randomly matched with another person..we pick a figure and have 2 weeks to paint it and enter. Were judged by a panel of judges and the winner move on this theirs only one. Sort of a king of the hill sort of thing.

So do we pick are own figures? or are they picked for us? Open to any manufacturer or just Wyrd miniatures. Are we just limited to a single 28mm figure or is skys the limit sort of thing? As long as we can compete in 2 weeks.

As for the amount of people.. you could run it like a NCAA bracket.. 4 divisions and every one meets in the middle. Cuts the time in half easy.

It's not necessary, it's kinda on the honor system that people will begin with a unpainted mini, but there will be a Iron Painter WIP section in the Galleries to show your work as it progresses, but putting pics in there is not mandatory. Only the final pic of the finished job is needed.

First and foremost, welcome everyone, particularly the new folks and the lurkers that we've managed to pull out of the aether with the running of the next installment of Iron Painter.

The rules are posted in a link on the front page in a link which I've been updating and tweaking over the last day or so in order to incorporate it a bit more as well as to cover folks questions about a few things. Matty, Bryan and Michelle above more or less got it pointed out but here is the direct link if you want/need it.

A few things to point out for folks new to the site or the IP.

You can use any miniature from any company that you wish (how many other manufactures can say that).
The theme is going to be the real killer. It is completely random and it IS going to push a lot of painters to do something that they might not have done before or don't care to do. Have fun with it, and keep in mind, that interpretation is just as important as execution. We've had master class painters knocked out of the running by amateurs because they didn't follow the theme or were very hesitant in it. Also, looking at theme from an entirely different point of view is also likely to get you points with the judges for shear ingenuity (Vincegamer is, to date, the master of this, take a look in the galleries and you'll see).
Smack talk! Keep in mind that this is pretty much the only place on the forums where this is truly encouraged, but in a FRIENDLY manner. Take a look at some of the previous threads for IP and you'll see people jabbing and swiping at each other the whole time, or getting hit from outfield from someone just 'watching'. Its all fun, don't get your knickers in a bunch you pansies (see, classic example in my own sophomoric manner).
Judges. Oooh, you are either going to love us or hate us. All three of them have different tastes, likes and skills and though we might all fall in line on one piece and have scores that are very similar, the next piece might be entirely loved by one and tore apart by another. They do try to be fair and leave comments for everyone (though with a group this size it might be a touch difficult at first).I think that should cover most of the questions and issues that have arisen on some of the past IP's. Overall, its meant to be a lot of good fun, push your limits and perhaps your comfort boundaries on painting and see what you are made of!

Oh, and since it has been asked privately and as well as in the shoutbox above, feel free to post or use the banner for the Iron Painter if you wish, we don't mind and frankly, the more the merry.

Everyone is painting against their group this first round, and the top 4 painters in each group move on to form the final 16, which would of course last 4 rounds to crown our winner! Just a thought.

Anyway, looks fun...and scoring should take forever, but hey, I signed up for that punishment! :D

oh, and Jeff, Nathan didn't answer, but it can be any size mini, we've even had dioramas and large display base, basically anything in the mini realm you can get done in 2 weeks!

Well, I had a nice long post written and subsequentlyl lost it.


Nutshell. After all the competitors are in, I will most likely divy painters up into larger pools....For the first round anyhow. So we may see some three and four way competitions, But, not to worry it will still be done as fairly as possible.

Great prizes too...some random, some for round winners, and a fairly decent grand prize (to be announced later!!) Anyone want to help with prizes, just let me know, Wyrd has already bellied up to the bar was some generous Gift Certificates.

I'm just really jazzed about the responses here. Anything we can do to pull out some lurkers is good too. I realize I am bias, but the IRON PAINTER is IMHO the most interesting, unique, and quite frankly grueling competition on the web. Most of that is to do with the enthusiasm the contestants, judges, observers, and smack talkers. Thanks all!

How does the first-round, 3/4-way competitions help? Just trying to eliminate one round from the competition? 33-64 participants make the same number of rounds with 1-on-1 competitions through the whole contest.

Well, there may be a lot of entrants, but since the number of rounds for an n-entrant competition is only on the order of log(n), it shouldn't be a big deal. For instance, a competition with 4000 entrants would only take twice as many rounds as a competition with 60 entrants, which only takes twice as many rounds as a competition with 8 entrants. And as Thryth already mentioned, pools of 3-4 only reduces the number of rounds by 1, so it seems kind of silly (not to mention disappointing! I want my 50% chance to advance!)

Besides, if more people who advance, we get more nicely painted miniatures to ogle, and more people get to paint several entries.

As for small groups and such, I think it would be better at the end of round one painting to randomly pair up contestants who had no shows for opponents and then you will most likely have 16 winners advancing on to round two. That's just my opinion, which after all, should count for everything.

Thanks for the well wishes. I consider myself very lucky to have the assistance of my aunt, in-laws and a pretty well behaved boy. Except for bathing the boy and some other chores, I am still able to paint a couple of hours a day and more on a weekend when the boy goes to stay with my in laws.

If I am lucky enough to have another girl that is just as easy to handle as my 1st, then I don't see why I can't continue to paint. Obviously it would be more hectic during the next 6-7 months or so having to wake up every 3 hrs for feeding, which is why I chose not to take part this time.

I know you're just kidding, but just a clarification. Judges have NOTHING to do with matchup draws or theme selections. They only (and I say only lightly, since its a ton of work) score the miniatures as they see fit....they don't even know the other judges scoring until I post it all.
