can i just say something.....even though we are all making fun of each other....we are having fun doing it......heck i will be the first to say i am no where near the abilities of most of these painters....but thanks for having fun with me and keeping everything cool here. this is why i tend to like this forum a bit more than others... rock on all.

and yes this was a shameless attempt to garner support from the judges.

That would make it an even 60. A good, round, number...

yeah but we really need 64.. 64 makes 32 pairs then 16, then 8 then 4,2 and 1

60 makes it 30 pairs , then 15, then 7.5????? it dont work..

we need 4 more and then cap it at 64.. so who do we get in the next hour.

There are rules for that already in place called 'Hey, gimme another chance'. Detailed out in the rules early on on the chance that something like this does happen.

Ok, what happens now since we have an odd number?

EldinTux
09-29-2007, 01:02 PM
That's easy. As the most talented painter here (even if I am the most underrated too) I should be given a 'by' to the next round. And as there are 61 painters in the comp, another 30 will go through leaving us with another odd number. In this case I get a 'by' again so that we end up with 16 for the next round. Simple see.

steelcult
09-29-2007, 01:42 PM
Hmm - seems simple enough -

Well, if there's a good chance of having some DNFs in the first round, one could require the odd man out to paint a miniature, and pair him up with someone who's opponent DNF at random. (So he would still have to work really hard in a vain attempt to match my skills, due to the large chance of being re-paired with me when my original poor schmuck of an opponent just gives up after seeing the pairings.) If there were several DNFs, you could randomly pair up their opponents. If there is no DNF, the odd man out gets a bye, assuming he actually painted a miniature (otherwise he counts as DNF).

Then in future rounds, when people are less likely to DNF, the gimme another chance rule could be used to ensure everyone has an opponent.

LavronYor
09-30-2007, 03:08 AM
I agree that we should pair the opponents of DNF's up with someone. A person should have to beat at least one other painter to get into the next round. But hey, what do I know.

Vike, how's about a little hint on the theme? just PM me :-)

" Talk to the hand"

supervike
09-30-2007, 11:42 AM
I don't totally disagree with you LavronYer.

But, and here is my thoughts on the matter, DNF is part of the game. Is it fun or desirable? Not at all...but being an Iron Painter means you can suffer through those weeks where 'real life' calls. There is no shame in DNF, but also you can't call yourself IRON if you don't get it done.

BUT that being said. I had been working on different combinations of 'three-ways' and such, but as someone far smarter than me (was that Thryth?) pointed out, it will not save us any rounds by doing so.

We will go with 30 one-on-one challenges. One random person is designated 'WYRD CARD'...They are required to paint a themed mini as well, but (and thank you Althai for this idea) they will be matched (randomly)against the remaining painter in a DNF match.

If there are no DNFers, the WYRD CARD essentially gets a bye, and automatically moves to round 2. I will supply the 'victors award' to that person in such an occasion.

No other DNF survivors will be paired up....so, in other words....if your opponent did not finish, and you are not randomly selected to face the single WYRD CARD, you get a pass to the next round. Hopefully, your DNF opponent is gracious enough to send off the victor's prize, but if not, I will take care of you!

Make sense? Any questions, don't hesitate. REMEMBER, the IRon Painter is still in it's relative infancy...there will be bumps in the road, but if I can pledge to one thing, it will be to make things as fair as I can. Fairness is VERY important to me.

As for the theme....would it be too much to believe I haven't even started coming up with themes yet?

Duende

Nice list, a few of them would require a whole lot of work in a two week period.. really be an oppertunity for some to show what they are worth..

Has anyone ever compiled a list,of previous themes? and have any ever been used more tha once?

supervike

No themes have been repeated in the 3 previous incarnations.

And, only a fraction of the themes I had have been used. I usually had a list of 15-20 to randomly choose from.

while fun, I really want to vote against OOP mini and 54mm .. in my case : I really cant afford (Im definitely not exagerating when I say that.) to buy anything besides what I own and what I get.(and I dont own anything thats OOP, unless Limited edition miniatures wich are no longer available count :))
see something like a fat-demon theme, I can convert etc. and be creative with that if I dont have it, (I love creative solutions anyway ;))
however not considering my own situation only...
its enough to paint something in the short time rounds, its another thing to wait for a miniature to arrive because you dont have it.
disqualifying people beforehand on their resources isnt really a matter of IRON or not isnt it :p

supervike
09-30-2007, 06:08 PM
Not to worry Melvin!

Most, if not all of the themes I use do not focus on 'specific' miniature choices.
Plus there is always enough 'wiggle' room with the themes to make them fit with what you have on hand (vincegamer is the king of theme interpretation!!)

Ritual
09-30-2007, 06:12 PM
Themes that only is about picking a certain mini is not what I think this competition is about (and OOP minis is one such thing). The idea behind the themes is to challenge the contestants' technique and imagination, not to promote those with the biggest stockpile of unpainted lead.

Amateur - Mine started in the late 70's and now takes up a good chunk of the storage in my painting room.

Course, a buddy of mine has an entire storage shed that is nothing but unpainted lead, but he used to work for Heritage.

I kind of like the theme of little guys, or familiars or animals or something along those lines.

SV (or someone) joked about drybrushing as a theme earlier, but it is a legitimate technique and could be considered for a theme.

One in honour of vincegamer, who has painted many odd items, including a candy (http://www.coolminiornot.com/58520) - the mini non-mini - a board game piece, face of a coin, something that's small and applicable to our techniques, but not a standard mini.
