So as I was running around yesterday to buy all the random odd things that have become holiday traditions for my family (certain types of pickles, olives, chocolate that no holiday is complete without), I was wondering what other non-mainstream traditions peoples families might have come up with for the holiday season.

Some in mine are:
-Every holiday includes a bowl of Large black olives (big enough for kids to stick on their fingers)
-Also a bowl of pickles cut lengthwise into quarters
-On thanksgiving, you can not have pie for desert until you have walked around the block at least once.
- On Christmas, my sister always will get me one small gift with absolutely NO purpose, for example, last christmas I got a large bag (100 I think) of the little baker hats you put on the end of chicken legs when you cook them...
- Every christmas my dad puts a little plastic worm into his sisters salad to freak her out...and it works every year

That's just a few that came to mind, but it's the things that make holidays special :)

I have just one real tradition, if you want to call it that.....I make some "me time" so I can enjoy the season without to much stress.

Our old XMas traditions:

Tacos for XMas eve.

Meat Fondu for XMas dinner.

At least one extra spicy butter sauce for the meat fondu.

We always used to get some toy that we can all turn into weapons and attack each other on XMas day.

More recently, we don't celebrate on XMas day anymore.

The last time my family celebrated Xmas was on Easter Sunday 2 years ago. Seriously, we had a tree and everything.

(That's when my Nephew came back from Iraq. The rest of us weren't interested in celebrating without him.)

We go all out here for the holidays for the most part. Halloween - we've got a great big haunted place. Thanksgiving - ham, turkey, parade on tv and the required nap everyone seems to fall into soon after stuffing ourselves crazy.

Christmas has grown rather big for us since we have three children and they like the hell out of decorations. Doesn't help that I moved into a nicer neighborhood here two years ago and the whole 'competition' thing kicked in pretty heavily for me and a few other people, so that now four of the houses literally look like the Griswalds Christmas Movie. We even rented a lift (cherry picker) so that we could get to the roofs last year and everyone swarmed the houses and got everything put up. Think I'll go a bit lighter on it this year though .. heh.

Wife spent the better part of two weeks making wreaths and garland the year before last - we have about 300 feet of garland we run around the windows, garage, door and wherever else I'm told to put it. Twelve wreaths, ten for outside, two for inside. Four inflatables, well was three up until yesterday until my father stopped by with this honkin' big arsed snow glob thing with two snowmen inside it and styrofoam snow being blown around inside of it (rather neat).

Three Christmas Tree's, one for the bay window (have to show off apparently - sigh), one for the foyer and one for the living room. I'm trying to beg off one of the tree's this year. Lighted bush nets for everything out front, along with the Maple that gets fully lit up. The kids have asked if they can decorate their giant arsed Rainbow Playset out back this year, in a moment of distraction I say 'yeah' and then realized what I said after everyone started whoopin' and hollerin'.

As for what my electrical bill is for the month of December - I've learned not to look or ask - that's the month where I beg off doing the bills and let the wife handle it.

Christmas Day this year I think we're going to have a house of fifteen to entertain and feed. Personally, I'm looking forward to hiding in bed all day.

Talk about overkill! I bet the kids love every second of it though.

Just some small lights on the balcony and maybe something nice smelling in the apartment. Usually doe cornish hens for the meal as its simple and yummy with stuffing.
