I've placed this here as a bit of a teaser for those of you looking forward to the next Wyrd Painting Contest, The Rotten Harvest!

This one will run from September 15th through October 31st and at the moment ya'll are more than free to guess at the theme and content of the contest. Halloween is the word for the day. Stay tuned for more!

Love the title of the next contest Nathan. I got a cool Idea for my entry. Hopefully I can pull it off as it is a bit adventrous for me. Hopefullly it will not  in my face. :)

Hi Drake,

Yeah, my wife actually came up with the name this time around and am I certainly glad she did, otherwise ya'll would of been stuck with something like 'The Poisoned Pumpkin Patch' or something else gaudy and too damn long to put on a banner properly.

:)

I'm looking forward to everyones participation as I think this is going to be one of the more 'fun' contests being that it is around Halloween and peoples creativity seems to jump a notch when the candy corn sugar rush kicks in!

Not to be griping... but are you going to do something so there's no category with ten thousand and one entries while all the others have only a few? How about what Frothers did with their sculpting contest and decide categories after the entries are in? Just an idea...

Looking forward to this Nathan. Hoping I'll be hom enough over the next month to work something out....

Cheers,

Well, I'm in again! Great excuse to finish off a large project that got pushed aside years ago. I certainly hope it fits the theme ( but at least it will get finished!)

I think the contests will grow and change and there are going to be the inevitable hiccups that have to be surmounted. That being said, I'm always up for suggestions and open conversation, but in the end I'll have to make the decision that I feel works best for the contest.

Now, to answer your question, yes, I could probably do that, but there isn't much I can do when I get forty fantasy entries and only six sci-fi entries. For me, I personally see it as less work if I spell everything out in the beginning so there is no one gong 'but .. but .. hey!' at the end of the contest. How would you have liked to have seen the categories for the last contest, I'm curious how you would have done it differently.

Also, I know Grumb (hey up there Scott) had a minor upset over the fact that several of the miniatures were in one or more categories (primarily - whatever category they were originally from and the Deadly Duel category for the last contest). I personally didn't have a problem with that, but I'm curious how others see it.

The floor is open for comment, good or bad, so feel free to fire off as I will be going forward with the Rotten Harvest contest here very soon and I usually like to spell everything out for my would be sponsors so that they know exactly what is going on as well (would hate to bite the hand that feeds you know).

The theme of each Wyrd Painting Contest will often determine the categories in which the miniatures can be submitted for. As 'The Rotten Harvest' contest is being held over the fall and Halloween holiday it is only natural for it to have a 'spook' factor.

WITCHES AND WARLOCKS: Spellcasters of all sorts, from high fantasy, modern day dabbler to the far sci-fi future. If they carry a wand, cast a spell or even have a hint of mysticism to them, this is the category for them.

NOT QUITE DEAD YET: Still stumbling around after all the major organ functions have shut down? Have a beef with the living? This category is for the Undead, or as they like to be called 'Living Impaired'.

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT: Creatures, critters, monsters and other things that have a tendency towards anti-social behavior and prowl the night looking for victims. Caution, here be Monsters!

THE TRICK OR THE TREAT: This is our catch-all category as there are some miniatures that are just right for the theme but just don't seem to fall into any other category. Zombie Hunters, pumpkin characters and I'm sure several miniatures I never would have even contemplated.

THE HARROWING HARVEST: A diorama with two or more miniatures locked in combat, or something as equally disturbing. Much like our last contests 'Deadly Duel'.

Reguardless of theme, every Wyrd Painting Contest will have the following two categories which contestants can only be voted to.

BEST OF SHOW: This is the miniature that steps heads above and has that extra spark that just catapults it above others. The top three that are voted for this category will be place herein.

BEST BASE/DIORAMA : Basing a miniature has become just as important as painting a miniature these days. Like the Best of Show, this is a miniature that is complimented by its base and stands out amongst its peers. The top three that are voted for this category will be place herein.

HeLLooooo!

I love spooky freaky stuff and am picking out a miniature right now for the contest, or maybe I'll raid the goodie pile at the store.

Looks like you had a nice turn out for the last contest Mr. Wyrd, how many do you expect will join this one? I'm not great at painting, but from the looks of some of the Total Testosterone entries it looks like I don't have to be a painting goddess. Is this ok?

I'm joining! Who esle is!?!?!?

Oh, I'll enter. In every categorie, if I manage to get them all finished. I have 5 ideas going, 3 of them dioramas of sorts. That's a lot of work, but I find deadlines very encouraging for my working- spirit

<checks the rules> Whew. Newp don't have to be a painting goddess, thankfully. That'd rule out most people out there, including me! As long as you are having fun painting, it doesn't matter what your painting level is. :)

I'm working on mine right now! One entry only, as I refuse to delude myself any more that I'm up for 2 or 3...

Quality, not quantity! Maybe not even that...

Sakura
09-04-2005, 02:11 PM
Quality is a good thing. It's just that I can paint rather fast, and still have good results, it doesn't get better just because I'm slower. At least this way I get some stuff finished, since I tend to leave my minis half-painted.

I'm definately in. I've got one entry thought out so far; just have to get my hands on the mini and see it if works out in practice.

Last contest I was way too ambitious and didn't finish the mini I had intended to enter. This time I'll start simple and see how much time is left when I finish that one.

I'm really looking forward to this one. The themed categories really get you thinking on multiple tracks for maximum creativity. :)

See the smart painter will start to realize that their might have a better shot at the big (non-schmuck) prizes if they do sci fi! So as long as "smart painter" doesn't proove to be an oxymoron, it should even out some in time maybe?

Yeah, I think in the long run (and I expect to see it in the Diorama category for this contest) that the categories that see less action will be mauled as people realize they have a better chance at a larger prize package.

As you said though, as these contests progress, I think it will even out as people realise this and try to make a go for as many categories as they can get away with. Of course, things will change here and there (such as the difference between this contest and the last) but mainly only around the holiday themed contests.

Fantastic Spoon.

Myself, I'm rather pleased with myself today. Finished one 'old school' miniature up today for the Rotten Harvest and I'm rather chuffed with how it turned out. Not a 'great' job, but it was a damn sight of fun as the miniature had a load of character.

Started up on the second one as well today and got the base paint on the display base. Can't wait to see how its going to turn out.

Yeah I thought about doing the diorama category for this reason. Even started that one but am off to a rough start and it might be a bit to ambitious for me to paint well and in time so it got put aside. But besides the some what bigger base (I don't think is big enough to count as diorama) of the one I already entered, time probably prevents me entering the diorama category.

As for trying to get figs in as many categories as possible ;) Well I can try that one... got 2 categories covered now already, should be able to get atleast a 3th one done I hope :D

I put aside a rather big diorama I was doing years ago that had a Halloween theme. All the parts were gathered together, and a model basecoated, and thats as far as it went. For 4 years!

Now, I'm inspired to finally finish it, esp. when the wife reminded me that I had it instead of dropping more $$ on minis!

ChickinChainmail
09-28-2005, 06:24 AM
I'm planning on 3, but will see how it goes. I saw some figures and had an idea for a diorama/duel, but it will depend on how much time I have before Oct 31. I have a wargame con this weekend so there goes 25% of my painting time.

I'd like to get them done, just so I can do the diorama, but at least should be able to get one or two in.

All three are basecoated, and I've started to put the paint on two of them. The hard part is then leaving enough time for the basing.

Sakura

Sounds like the story of my wife. She's born halfway between santa (dec.6) and christmas.....which made it even more difficult. Just a few days past a celebration day, and a few days prior to the next=tough luck for the gifts. She was not amused. Not at all.

I intend to finish my first (and hopefully not only) entry today. I've only got the base and some small touch-ups left on it. I have my second entry assembled and only need to greenstuff some gaps in the joints before starting painting it. Hopefully I should manage to finish that one as well.

I'll have another two minis that would make good entries, but I don't expect to be able to do any of those. Can't be too optimistic... :D

Welcome to the board artshiraz.

On the subject of birthdays, there has been a bit of the jip around here as well as I was born on December 2nd and most everyone (except my parents) managed to still combine my gifts.

My oldest daughter was born on December 24th, a few hours shy of the 25th actually. We made a point of telling everyone, that if you are going to combine her presents, don't bother giving them at all as it is unfair to her. It is a bit overwhelming for her we've noticed and have discussed holding her birthday parties in July or something for all the kids/etc because it is quite taxing at the same time.

To get back on track, I've finished one, have one in EXTREME WIP which I'm really not happy about because of the colors I'm having trouble with. We'll see how it goes.

Hi Artshiraz!

Got 3 entries in, 1 is a bit of fun, another is a bit of a departure from my usual and the other one is one of my favourite minis that I've done to date....

Looking forward to seing what everyone comes up with and getting some good honest feedback on my painting..

My daughter would be happy to share her birthday with your daughter if she'd like to relocate it to a day away from gift-giving holidays. Her birthday is July 13th. Well away from Christmas!

This is a friendly reminder that contest entries for the Wyrd Painting Contest MUST be *anonymous*. Two posts have been removed (one by Nathan and one by me) in the hopes of keeping the contest fair. Please do not post what miniatures you plan to enter as the rules will not allow it's entry into the contest if you do. The enthusiasm and willingness to share is appreciated but the rules have to be followed to keep the contest both fun and fair for all. After the judging is done specifics are not only wonderful to post but greatly encouraged. So please save the specifics for after the judging. :)

Whew - that was a lot more work than I was expecting, its time for me to get a full time henchman (or woman) and see about making my life a bit easier. Believe it or not, this forum and software has made things much easier, just I had a load of editing to do with photographs, comments and the like which took up most of my time over the last couple of days.

Apologies for the delay, but I think I'll write that into the contest 'rules' next time around in order to give myself a couple of days to get things edited without everyone screaming at me.

:D

Now, in order to view the contest entries you must go to the Rotten Harvest contest gallery where there are five sub galleries which have the appropriate contest entries. This time around, leaving comments is much easier as you can do so immediately as you are viewing each entry - no more e-mails, copy and pasting text - all right there in front of you.

Please, if you have the time or the inclination, leave a comment for the entries but be constructive with any critique. If you don't like something, let them know why, and how you think they can improve upon it, but do it in a polite and constructive way, not just shooting from the hip saying 'this sucks!'. At the same time, if you like something, feel free to let them know as well. I've found with the last couple of contests that entrants really enjoy the comments and thus I encourage it.

To encourage comments and critique on the entries, five random individuals will be chosen to receive a participation prize. In order to be eligible for this, you must leave a comment on ATLEAST HALF of the entries in the gallery. Contest entrants are eligible for this as well.

Comments left in the gallery will NOT be annonymous.

Now, for the actual VOTING, it will be done here in the forums under a thread for each category. I had planned a separate software for the voting but found it incompatible with what I was planning, thus we are resorting to the old fashioned POLL. Once again, this makes things easier on me for the simple fact I no longer have to count each vote and recount again as the polls will keep up with this automatically and when it is time to announce the contest, no dithering from me as I rush trying to figure everything out.

Voting in the polls will be anonymous, only the final statistics will be published at the end of the contest voting.

Polls will be open until FRIDAY, November the 11th. Winners will be announced the following day.

Feel free to discuss the entries, discuss your votes, whatever. For those of you that entered the contest, DO NOT comment on your own entries UNTIL the voting is over. This isn't a popularity contest so I do not want anyone drumming up votes for their own pieces. Now some painters are recognizable from the get go with their style, that's understandable and accepted, just the painters themselves, I wish to keep their thoughts to themselves on their OWN entries.

Enjoy, and thank you once again for everyone that has participated as well as the sponsors of this event!

That's all good Jim, this is new for everyone so I expect some hiccups and some misunderstandings initially but things should smooth out from here on out. If anyone has ANY questions, feel free to ask. You have seven days for voting, so I'm sure I can answer any and all questions in that time.

Should there be any problems, mix ups, whatever, let me know. I'm human and I will make mistakes, just hopefully I've caught them all this time around. If not, let me know and I'll try and get them updated quick as possible.

In order to leave comments in the gallery just do 'quick reply' and write out whatever you want and hit enter. This will post your comment to the gallery for everyone to read. It will NOT be annonymous, mainly as I feel that everyone should own up to comments. Last time around, there were some rather spiteful comments from some individuals and I feel that if you want to be an ass, you can do it publically instead of me having to play the editor.

I would like to have had everything under 'one roof' so to speak when it comes to voting and commenting, but the software that I was looking into just didn't allow for it, looking at another one right now that I might actually hire a coder for PHP to whip up if these contests continue to be a popular venue. We'll see.

So yes, one vote (I was tempted to allow for multiples) and in their respective threads if you would. I don't mind people grandstanding about one miniature or another as long as its not the artist himself going 'vote this one, vote this one!'. Some artists are going to be recognized no matter what, but I would like to make this as fair as possible.

Still people can comment on all but their own though. Ah well maybe it's not that important anyway. I for one wouldn't bother with trying to find out who's who's before voting. Work enough voting and commenting without having to find that out first. And it really shouldn't matter anyway

Frustrated Father
11-03-2005, 05:59 PM
Well, that's true, but what it comes down to essentially is a bit of fun and enjoying the comments - if you want to hold off on commenting on a few extra until the last day of the contest, that is one way to do it. Or just commento on your own in a 'bland' fashion.

:D

Essentially though, by making the comments public right off the bat, it takes a LOT of work off me from having to moderate them one by one, or to assure everyone that yes indeed, your comments did go through, no, you aren't going to see it immediately, yes, I'm sure it is there ...

You get the idea. I started getting that with the entries for the gallery as well. I'm looking into seeing if I can have a 'thank you' page coded into the gallery in order to let people know that their pictures did make it.

What a great turnout Mr. Double F! I wasn't able to finish up myself due to real life intruding, but I am happy to see such a nice turnout!

Best of luck everyone! Off to vote.

Hey folks!

Dachande did a wonderful Necromancer that apparently didn't make it into the contest as there was either a tweak in the software or an error somewhere else. Anyhow, he didn't feel it was right to include it into the contest after I had already posted everything as he didn't want it to come off as being 'fishy', but I thought that he deserved to have the miniature seen, and commented upon.

Take a moment, view this lovely lady, and leave a comment if you would. Dachande's looking forward to the comments more than anything I believe.

That's a shame :( Sorry to hear that Dachande. You did a great job painting the skintones. I love the overall colors of this piece. The sword is probably my favorite part. It's got that cool, green tint to it, and let's not forget the freehand. I also like the dirty feel to it. I presume you did washes over it. The red has the old worn out look. Great job on this mini.

This is a cool mini! It's a shame it wasn't finished in time, I'm sure it would have done well in the competition. I really like the skin and the way it harmonises with the red cape. I REALLY like what you've done with the sword. Filing off that sculpted pattern on the blade and do freehand was a good choice. I don't like embossed engravings on swords blades since it generally looks out of scale. The sickly green tone on the sword looks great. What doesn't work as well for me is the bat, in particular the front side of the bat. I don't know if the photo is messing things up, but there seems to be some detail that is not defined properly and it makes the bat look a bit diffuse. Also, on the back of the cape the shadows look a bit blotchy in places. They seem to be made with washes and if so, maybe you should use less paint each time and do more layers instead. That gives you more control over where the paint goes and how it's going to look.

Still, a great looking mini Dachande! :thumb:

EDIT: I didn't read Nathan's post properly... :imsorry: This mini apparently WAS finished in time.

Overall, it's a great paint job and a shame it didn't make it on the deadline. To prove that in art matters opinions vary, I tend to like how the bat came out :P. I do think that some areas of the skin could use a bit more highlighting and the cape could use some washes/glazes to smoothen some of the blends.

In regards to the voting.

Don't get me wrong, I like the new voting system quite well, but I really liked the fact in the last contest (the Total Testosterone one) where you could vote for your TOP THREE in each category.

The reason I like it was because there were several times where two (or even 3) submissions were very close in my mind for top spot, but since I could only vote for one, the others seem to not get any sort of 'recognition'. I realized the new system has made it seem more cut and dry, but I'd like those painters to know which ones were close...

Me not smart when it comes to how this could be integrated into the new, less labor intensive, voting system. Regardless, still a great contest!!

Frustrated Father

It can be done, and I might integrate it on the next contest. In the mean time, if you like something, discuss it in the forums on those that have your attention but didn't get your vote should you wish.

The feedback is very good so far, I'm pleased that people are putting comments on where things could be improved - personally I find it very helpful.
When it's over I'll be asking individuals to expand on some of their comments and suggest what I could have done differently.

I concur with what has been said.
I admit I'm not to fond of her back. Somehow that big "dirty" spot doesn't do it for me.
The sword on the other hand... ahh the sword. What a magnificent piece. You did good. Sorry about that software glitch.

What a shame, she’s lovely....smooth sweet skin tones and the creature on her arm is nicely painted, I like the combination of green/ browns. The sword is outstanding also. The only thing I would comment on is the brown shadow area at her back, it looks rough compared to the rest of her skin.

I like the soft red of the robes, contrasts very nicely with her hair and skin. The sword is fantastic, very nice job. I like the imp from the back, but he seems a little less defined from the front. Great job overall, and I'm sorry to hear there was a SNAFU preventing it being in the contest.

Hey folks,

Contest packages have NOT gone out yet. I've been waiting for a couple of support packages to trundle in here but it looks like it might be a lost cause. Going to start getting packages together this weekend (its a Holiday this Thursday and I've got family in from Wednesday - Saturday) and they will be going out, along with a crap load of orders for the Wyrd Miniatures, early next week.

If you haven't gotten me your address, please do.

I have been lurking in the background for quite a while but have decided that I just had to comment on this figure and ask a question.

This is such a nice figure (scult and painting) who is the manufacturer and official name? I asked around and someone thought it was a Reaper miniature but I couldnt find it on their site.

Nice painting, especially the skin tones... I would love to see more of your work.

Welcome to the Wyrd Anarch.

Yup, that's a Reaper miniature, and she's supposed to be a Necromancer if I remember correctly. I did a quickie look and couldn't find her though, but I'm sure someone on here can point her out quickly enough. Dachande did do an excellent job on her I agree.

Sorry, I just had a serious 'flash back' when I saw this. When a buddy of mine were Seniors in High School we were in our Leadership class and we were talking about Women's Rights and had to come up with a list of them, etc. Jason and I laughed our asses off the night before as we came up with all sorts of 'rights' and when we were asked to present it the next day it was .... well lets say the teacher was sitting in a corner bitting his knuckle trying not to laugh, the girls were yelling at us, the guys were hooting and slapping their desks and we spent a goodly amount of time in 'sensitivity sessions' for that.

Would have done it all over again ....

You'll like this then, just a little something I found online:

MEN'S RULES

Learn to work the toilet seat. You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

Birthdays, Valentines, and Anniversaries are not quests to see if we can find the perfect present yet again!

Sometimes we are not thinking about you. Live with it.

Sunday = sports. It's like the full moon or the changing of the tides.
Let it be.

Don't cut your hair. Ever. Long hair is always more attractive than short hair. One of the big reasons guys fear getting married is that married women always cut their hair, and by then you're stuck with her.

Shopping is NOT a sport. And no, we are never going to think of it that way.

Crying is blackmail.

Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this one: Subtle hints do not work! Strong hints do not work! Obvious hints do not work! Just say it!

We don't remember dates. Mark birthdays and anniversaries on the calendar. Remind us frequently beforehand.

Most guys own three pairs of shoes - tops. What makes you think we'd be any good at choosing which pair, out of thirty, would look good with your dress?

Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it. That's what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

A headache that last for 17 months is a problem. See a doctor.

Check your oil! Please.

Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 days.

If you won't dress like the Victoria's Secret girls, don't expect us to act like soap opera guys.

If you think you're fat, you probably are. Don't ask us. We refuse to answer.

If something we said can be interpreted two ways, and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one.

You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done. Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

Whenever possible, please say whatever you have to say during commercials.

Christopher Columbus did not need directions, and neither do we.

The relationship is never going to be like it was the first two months we were going out. Get over it. And quit whining to your girlfriends.

ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.

If it itches, it will be scratched. We do that.

We are not mind readers and we never will be. Our lack of mind-reading ability is not proof of how little we care about you.

If we ask what is wrong and you say "nothing," we will act like nothing's wrong. We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, expect an answer you don't want to hear.

When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine. Really.

Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as navel lint, the shotgun formation, or monster trucks.

You have too many shoes.

It is neither in your best interest or ours to take the quiz together. No, it doesn't matter which quiz.
