Right to it.
Drum roll please!!
Winners in red:
Stupid Cow 66.5 vs Cdukino 70.5
vincegaMer 66 vs. Tab Studio 65
WHAT A GREAT SEMI FINAL!!!!
Fantastic entries, all four of them.
Some observations:
cdukino and Tab Studio tied for 'best in theme' each with 19
cdukino dominated the technique and overal aesthetic with 17.5 and 34, respectfully.
Stupid Cow would have beaten any other competitor
Tab Studio, referred to as the Juggernaut, lost out by 1 measly point!! Tough break there!
vincegaMer did his usually solid best, and skates right into the finals!!
So the Iron Painter 3 FINAL matchup is set!
vincegaMer vs. Cdukino
Official ballots will follow so you can double check my math. I'm pretty sure about it though!!!
Thanks to all the contestants, especially to Stupid Cow and Tab Studio for putting up such a great fight.
Thanks to all the judges! Although there are less entries to go through, it certainly doesn't get any easier, does it???

Good basing is about adding to the mini's story, giving it a sense of solidly being in a place or setting. Whether this is by adding to the mood with creepy lighting, or creating a setting that makes you feel like you've taken a snapshot of a particular moment, the sense of believability can truely add or detract from the overall presentation of the mini. Basing ver much helps define the overall composition of the pice. I find it very very cool that this round I felt compelled to give 5's across the board on theme.

First impression is great. The base concept is perfect, fits the mini and gives a real sense of place and story. I feel like I'm missing something though. The fact that I cant decide if it's sand or snow is rather bugging me. It's definately the color of snow, but it appears to be drifting in that way sand does and none of it is sticking anything else. If it's sand I'd suggest making the color a bit beiger, closer to the color of his outfit. If it's snow I'd suggest maging it stick to the ridges of things some more, the way wet snow does when it's blown against things. Either way, if you're going to continue working on this piece I'd recommend making the drifts that roll up against the truck a higher, giving more of an impression of wind that would really add to the impression of what the environment is like.
All in all really nice work on the painting, both of the figure and the base pieces. A really impressive piece.
Mmmm looking back at the comments (I dont read them till I've made mine, I see it's suppsed to be sand. Feel free to ignore the comments on snow I've added here.

The basework is impressive, just the fact that you carved it yourself blows my mind. Overall though it's just not working for me. I think mostly it's the green light you used. The figure on top of the stairs almost looks like one of the gargoyles, and the figure on the bottom sticks out because so much red really pops out against the green of the rest of the piece. The gargoyles cracking out of the walls really work though.
So, while writing this I decided to take your pics and put them through photoshop converting them to black and white, which I got two things out of: 1) the reason the green is bugging me so much as lighting on the miniature is that it is actually adding very little value difference, I think this is why my eyes are seeing it as paint and not as light, and 2) I really love the piece compositionally as a whole. It makes a great scene from a black and white movie. :)

OK, this little guy rocks. I love the base you've given him, it is so exactly where he belongs. The overall painting is awesome. The only thing about it that doesnt feel quite up to par is his clothing. I mean his face and hair practically glow with luminecant color and the base has all these wonderful rust effects and color transitions. In comparison the clothing looks kinda out of place and rather flat. The nmm on his spider legs is great, and the copper wire stuff looks really good from the right side, but a bit splotchy from the other directions. Once again though, you have pulled out a piece that is definately my favorite of the round.

Sweet little piece. Technically it's solid, the fresco is absolutely awesome and you've really brought out the expression on the monk's face. Gotta love a monk with *that* look in his eye. The soft almost idylic, not quite cartoony atmosphere is really starting to become a staple of your style that I very much enjoy.

This has to be the worst thing to judge this time around! We're down to the cream of the crop and each entry is amazing in it's own right. I'll be adding my comments later to the gallery, but I've got my scores here (I tried to be a little more critical than in previous rounds):

You know being a judge and all, I know some folks have to fall by the wayside, but this is one time in particular where I wish everyone could just continue on through with the great pieces they've done.
Very well done, all of you.

whoohooo... pawned you... sticks out tongue to Stupid Cow ... I'm having beef tonight...
All kidding aside I thought all the entries were great. The fact all scores were so high only reflects that. Sure would have been a hard round to judge.
All bases looked great, which includes the one of my pretty tough competition. Great to see so much on such a confined space of a regular base. Worked out great and I really liked what you have done.
Tab's was brilliant too. Especially in the building department. Still can't believe you cut that whole thing out... it's crazy but it looked great. The painting stayed behind quality wise to the sculpting but was still very admospheric and I enjoyed seeing it being build and the result. Tracy, you might just have tempted me into doing a much bigger base one day too. heck if you can do one this well in merely 2weeks I should be able to do one someday without deadline right?
Vince base... loved the thing. Relaly mad max, apocalyptic looking. Like he others the only thing I did not like so much was the sand/snow... but the car was great as was the figure standing on it. Lovely weathering as well
Wow that is close, and one spectacular showing on the theme scores from all the entrants!

Just kidding, of course but they really did bug out.
Wow.
I'm stunned really.

Congratulations to Cindy and Vince on advancing and good luck in the next round.
Kudos to SC and Tracy on putting up a heck of a fight. All of the entries were amazing and I certainly didn't envy the judges in this round.
Enjoy your "Manly" prize, vince!

Wow, I have to agree that everyone should be congratulated this round. Now to say an extra congrats to vince and cindy. And a job very well done to tracy and the mysterious stupidcow aka canopicdoll ( I couldn't find your real name, and I did search, I did see where Singapore is, and that he lives near Woodbridge Hospital ) Anyway, very nice job all and good luck vince and cindy..
So, do they get the new theme tomorrow?
BTW, vince, it is nice to know that I was once again only beaten by a finalist.....
That's what all my exes used to tell me :)
Hm, so why are they all exes then? ;->
Congrats on all your manliness! Though you know I've still gotta root for Cindy and the distaff side of things on principle. ;->

How on earth did you find out where I lived? The detail you have about me is freaking me out. :afraid: Woodbridge hospital is a mental hospital if you do not already know but its just a coincidence that I live near there. :tongue1:
Back to topic, congrats to the winers this rd. Cindy you were a tough opponent and I have no regrets being beaten by you this rd. I did my best but wasn't good enough. I'll pm you in a bit for your prize.
Vincegamer, all the best in the final rd and hope you make it to the top and do us men some proud.

Sorry, it felt awkward to congratulate you as Stupidcow, so I went looking for your real name and got a little geography lesson. Mine is too easy to find, however google earth has my house as two houses away from my real house.
And, even though I have mentioned the origin of my pen name, I would be surprised if anyone could find it again.
I AM NOT A STALKER...... no really....
and congrats again ( your name here ) :-)
besides, if we both keep doing the iron painter thing, I am bound to send you a mini sooner or later.....

I forget that the internet is a powerful tool. I won't be surprised it'll be able to pin point where I do my toilet business even hehe.
I think the IP is great in a sense that it can be full of surprises. Even when I finished strong in rd 1, I would have been out in rd 2 or 3 if my opponent were any off those that made it to rd 4. We lost quite a few strong contenders like Ericj, Wren, Beelzebrush just to name a few who had a very good chance of making it to the finals even.
I might give IP4 a miss though. I need to heal my butt abit after all that kicking by the Iron ladies.
P.S. Added my name to my blog. Missed out that point when creating.

I got the mini ready but I'm currently serving my yearly military service till 15 this month, which leaves me with little time to settle work and family issues. I'll have to say sorry for the delay but it'll be sent for sure.

Tracy,
No hurry. Like I said, there's still a week before this round ends, then there's the time it will take for Cindy to send me a mini all the way from Europe before I photo and post all my winnings. Please save the postage, and I'm really looking forward to getting that dwarf back.

How does that work out, the yearly military service? Blanket thing where everyone does a stint in the military or is it a voluntary thing where you are doing the weekend warrior bit?

Here's how it works in Singapore. Every male upon reaching 18 is required by law to serve national service for 2 years, be it in the police force, civil defense or military. Unless you have some medical records which prohibits your scope of duty then you are excused. Most people will defer them till they finish their high school / Uni education before serving.
After 2 years full time, you will once again become a civilian but every year, you are required to go back to your unit for further training or any other duties for another 10 consecutive number of in camps. I'm part of the 84mm RR crew and during peace times like now I'm a RP guarding a military airport. This is my 6th in camp btw.

Cool.
And this is something I've been bellyaching about here in the US. I'm of the opinion that everyone (male or female) should do a two to four year stint in the military myself. Be a lot less dumbasses out there I suspect, or atleast some that have had some form of discipline.
That's another topic though I suppose.
