There are several fora where such a contest was hosted and I really like the idea. For people that don't know what it is all about:
*people sign up for the contest
*Each contestant -secretly- gets the name of a different contestant and a preferred miniature to be painted (which can be handy for gamers/collectors). You could think of a single miniature of $5-$10 or something in that category.
*You paint the miniature as desired and then send it to the organizer.
*The organizer sends the miniatures to the person who the miniatures were painted for.
*People get a package from an unknown painter, open the package, scream in joy and surprise and post several posts here on the forum (and probably guess whose paintjob it is)
*After all miniatures have been painted and sent, the organizer says who painted what for who and everybody is happy.

So, any painters interested in such a community thing?

You're a good painter, Wayne, from what I've seen. Don't put yourself down. :)

And isn't it really the thought that counts?

:D

doesn't the thought only count in horseshoes and handgrenades? :D

I think it would be fun to just do a painter ID contest. Everyone submits a photo of a completed mini (which has never been shown) to a central person who posts them all along with all the names of those participating. Then everyone guesses who painted what and the person with the most right gets to feel all smart...

just another idea that isn't quite so involved (I kind of like less involved ideas :))

The places I've seen it done, the painter is given the address of their recipient so there's only one mail charge/delay. Often the organizer will allow people to specify whether or not they'll ship internationally to themselves in case shipping costs are a concern to some.

I'd enjoy participating in something like that in theory, in practice I probably wouldn't be free to do so until late August. :-< Eric's idea sounds fun too.

well, if I don't get the go ahead for the paint class instructor, I would be interested in participating.

sounds fun, I think its a bit unfair on the organise rthough to be lumbered with a lot of postage costs, the majority of which are international too.

Erics idea sounds cool, it reminds me of a competition we do at work around christmas time too- everyone in the office brings in a picture of themselves as a baby/child and you have to guess who's picture is who's!

Aye Erics idea sounds good, I like feeling smart.

I thought being close only counted for those things? ;)

Good idea, BTW (the guess the miniature contest)
