I did this one for a local painting competition. I tried to go for a darker, more subdued red in keeping with his dark nature. Comments and critiques, please!

You're style is certainly improving and this is a top job here Jabber. Front of the miniature is very interesting, back less so, but nice all the same. Like the glowing blue that you've done on this one.

This is a very nice job, very crisp and clean. I like the scheme, even though it is basically running all the primary colors it still has a nice balanced harmonious look to it. I think the redrunes runes on the sash could use a little more defenition to make them a little more sharp. But over all it is very good.

Great color scheme and painting on a very weird miniature (the pose of the sword confuses me...). I also like the base a lot...the blue is very mysterious and intriguing.

Thanks for the comments and critiques, everyone. I really appreciate it!

@FF--yeah, I thought about doing some sort of freehand on the red part of the robe on the backside, but couldn't decide what to do and ran out of time anyway.

@Mick--thanks for the compliments--hopefully I'll continue to improve with the new EFS minis I got... :)

@R2--thanks also for the compliments. Any suggestions on how to get the red to stand out more? The pic doesn't show it well, but I took them up to yellow. Normally I would darkline runes like that, but what color do you use when you are covering black?

@Malebolgia--I agree with your thoughts on the mini. I was not excited about the mini, but it was the one selected for the contest. The especially frustrating part was it was billed a "mystery mini". I didn't know which mini I was to paint until I paid the $5 entry fee. I am glad you like the base. I was worried it would not come off well. Basically the concept was that this guy was a dark arts warrior-wizard type. He is in the process of an incantation, so his eyes are glowing, his sword (read:wand) runes are glowing, and the "thing" he is summoning from the swamp is causing bubbles and glowing. The blues seem somewhat scattered, but that was the idea--essentially 3 very local sources of lighting, although they are all being generated by the same spell. Make sense?

That does makes sense and works very well too!
But what a weird contest that you'll have to buy a figure you don't know! Okay, it does have its charms due to the surprise-factor, but if the miniature is ugly as hell (this one isn't that bad), it would be hard for me to paint it. I need a certain coolness to get motivated (hmmm...although making an ugly miniature look nice also motivates...:)). But then again, $5 isn't that much.

I like the local gamestore owner, but I suppose it could be a backhanded way to get rid of overstocked merchandise that IS ugly and isn't selling.

It might have been a mystery, but it is a pretty cool mini anyhow. What is it anyway?

As far as the red runes go I say try some sharp highlights along the edges . It should help define the shape and give them more depth.

Ahh, I see--perhaps a yellow or take it all the way to white? This guy is from Reaper's Warlord line. He is Arik, Inquisitor Advisor from the Overlord faction, #14127.

@Watwe--feel free to steal all you want--I'd be honored :D
