Ok, this one was a bit different....to keep the contest coherent, all of you pass onto the next round, with the exception of Mosch, who graciously bowed out.

Here are the Overall scores

stupidcow 63.5
Orkydave 62
matty1001 55
thryth 62
Mosch 45
Tabstudios 72
vincegaMer 60

Feel free to compare yourselves to your last matchup, but since they are in effect, meaningless, I will just stick to showing individual scores.

Some quick notes..

High Score Total....Tabstudios with 72! Jubilee with 64.5, and stupidcow with 63.5

Best Score in THEME....Orkydave (thanks to an unprecedented, and never to be duplicated 'bonus' point) scores a perfect 20! Tabstudios with 18, Jubilee with 17.5

Best score in Technique...Tabstudios with 18.5, Stupidcow with 17

Best in 'overall'...Tabstudios with 35.5, Jubilee with 32, cdukino with 32

The matchups and theme will be announced as soon as I finish this up!

Here are the judges scores....feel free to check my math, in fact, I encourage it. Of course, since these scores are academic, I probabaly got it all right this time....

SKYA
Theme for this round was judged on the following basis:
1 - umm where?
2 - there's some black in there I suppose
3 - theres areas of black
4 - definate amounts of black that really give you a sense of texture and different tones, the whole thing gives the impression of black
5 - Amusingly cool interpretation of theme. Or the black is used in a way that really adds a sense of life to the mini that it wouldnt have if painted in a different color scheme

The hardest part about judging this this was deciding on any parameters for the theme since basically, if something in the submission was painted black, it pretty much hit the theme on the head. So I could only think to go by how well the black was presented... Did I automatically think.. "Now that's a black [whatever]!" Especially one entry in particular was excellently painted but the "blackness" of it just didn't hit me.

Scoring:

TAB Studio
Theme: 5
Technical: 5
Overall: 9.5
Nothing like a black dragon for a black theme! Wow, I'm amazed how well he's painted and based in only a two-week timespan. How long did it take you to assemble him? The base is great, your work keeps getting better and better.

orkydave
Theme: 6! (yeah, try and stop me, vike!)
Technical: 3
Overall: 7.5
Bonus point for theme interpretation! Talk about taking it ultra-literally! The gobbo colors are a little flat but the overall scene is great! Do those letters have magnets on the back? Very nice, I like the wood of the bucket as well.

cdukino
Theme: 5
Technical: 4.5
Overall: 9
It does look like painted black metal rather than black metal which you discussed before, but I like it. Looks like somebody took a Harley and gave it teeth and an attitude. Although I wouldn't have noticed the "scorched earth" effect in front of him until you pointed it out.

matty1001
Theme: 5
Technical: 3.5
Overall: 7
I don't agree with vike's comment that he thinks the theme was ignored, geez, I look at her and think "Ah, he painted a black woman" (How un-pc of me!). Technically, the red could use some more shadowing and the metals look a bit flat. I do like her base though. And just wondering, but are those white spot in her hair in the back shot a photo glare, dust motes, or did you miss a tiny spot or two?

Stupidcow
Theme: 3
Technical: 5
Overall: 8.5
This is the entry I mention above where the "blackness" of it just doesn't strike me first. When I first saw it, the colors that popped into my mind first were purple and blue. Excellently, marvelously painted but the only part that I would describe as black-black is his skirt (or whatever that is).

vincegamer
Theme: 5
Technical: 4
Overall: 8
Plenty of black things here to fit the theme. I can't imagine painting all those tiny monitors without losing part or all of my mind. I don't like that he doesn't look a part of the base, the monitor wall is just a seperate piece set behind him. But it's a great entry, as usual, something I never would have expected.

Thryth
Theme: 5
Technical: 4
Overall: 8
I like your take on the theme. Very nicely painted too, very smooth looking. But what Skya said earlier, a spreading darkness is a difficult effect to pull off, and in some of the angles, the highlighting makes it look more brownish than black. Also, doing something to empahsize the faces within the spell effect wouldn't have hurt either (I almost didn't notice them.)

Jubilee
Theme: 5
Technical: 4
Overall: 8
She matches my idea of what a drow should look like, BLACK-skinned, not purple, grey or brown. Nice work on her she look great, my only nit-pick would be that her hair lacks depth (it could be the photo though) and her bracelet looks dull (no "hotpoints", where the light is reflecting off of it). I like the green in the floor.

Mosch
Theme: 4
Technical: 2
Overall: 6
I'll admit to being a bit thick-witted as well since the idea os "black humor" didn't strike me at first either. I do like the parody of it though. Not much a selection however.. it must be the end of the day. :D But like Skya said, it's hard to see the minis themselves to judge their paintjobs farily.

Comment: Very nice skin! The bluish black turned out really nice and smooth and I like the combination with the nearly black brown cloth. The hair, as you say, looks too flat in the photo, but you mentioned it being overexposed. Great piece, alltogether. Maybe the base could have been a little bit more exciting, but it looks good at least.
Theme: 4
Technique: 4.5

cdukino:
Comment: I like the general look of this mini (although I'm not really fond of the sculpt) and I think the combination of black and beaten bronze armour look great. The black looks a bit rough though, IMO. The blendings seem a bit "shaky" - some places they're quite smooth and some places they are very crude (at least in the photos). The metallics and the bone jaws are the best things about this mini. The glow look a bit dull to really seem glowing, I think.
Theme: 3
Technique: 3.5
Overall: 7

stupidcow:
Comment: Mmmm... one of my favourite sculpts! :) I like how the theme has made you paint this guy REALLY dark. It makes him look meaner than ever. I think you've succeeded very well with the black robe. I'm a bit puzzled by the photos as the general colour atmosphere look different in the different photos. From the front he seems to go in red and purple tones with the blue faces contrasting strongly. But in the side views he seems to go in blue and green tones with the blue faces blending in. :/ Anyway, I like the armour too, but mostly so in the first pic where the rust seems to be part of the general colour scheme. Very nice weathering! The base puzzles me too a bit. Is it some sort of decking? With a tuft of tall grass coming through?
Theme: 4
Technique: 4
Overall: 8

orkydave:
Comment: Very funny take on the theme! Bonus points for comedy value! :) The paintjob is rather simple and straightforward, but well done and looks good.
Theme: 4
Technique: 3
Overall: 6

matty1001:
Comment: Good choice of mini! ;) The skin looks quite nice, but I do think you have got your skin tone a little bit off. A lighter toned dark skin generally has warm colours whereas really dark dark skin can have a cold look to it (not necessarily, but some people do). Yours seem to be somewhere inbetween, quite light (for being dark skin) but cold looking, and somehow it doesn't scream "human skin" to me. But, it's smooth and neat! Speaking of neat, I think the whole thing would look neater if you had done some darklining or something to separate different areas. Also, is there a mold line running along the inside of her left arm? The sword looks nice and the trousers look suitably shiny (maybe the highlights are a bit too yellow, but no big deal).
Theme: 3
Technique: 3
Overall: 6

thryth:
Comment: Daring idea, I must say. However, I think this is the type of idea that is better in theory than in reality. Lighting effects work because we can paint something that our eyes (or minds, rather) recognizes and interprets as real looking. "Negative light" spreading darkness, however, doesn't exist and, thus, visualising it doesn't make it click in our minds. I have seen rather expensive visual effects of this type in films and it doesn't really work there either. BTW, I think I've seen this made in minis once or twice before... ;) Other than that, I like what you've done here. Neatly painted with a simple but suitable base.
Theme: 3
Technique: 3.5
Overall: 7

mosch:
Comment: Ambitious project for a 2 week period! The theme doesn't seem to play a central part here, although, there's enough black involved to give you some points. I would like to have seen closer photos of the individual minis, but from what I can see they are neatly painted. Maybe the wood could use a more textured look. Still, good work!
Theme: 2.5
Technique: 3
Overall: 5

TAB studio:
Comment: Speaking of ambitious... :o A black dragon certainly works well with this theme. And it's well painted too! The green shine of the black really makes it look freaky and scary. The green drool give further emphasize to that. The horns are well made and so is the scales on the belly. The eyes could have been slightly brighter to make it look more alive and give it that piercing stare. The base is absolutely fantastic! I really love the green ooze that seems to really glow.
Theme: 4
Technique: 4.5
Overall: 8.5

vincegamer:
Comment: Pretty nice looking mini! But, I must say I prefer it without the wall of tv screens. I think your renditions of different black materials turned out really well. The boots are the best part in my opinion. The difference between the floor part and the rubble part on the base is a little bit too big to work, at least for me. It got me wondering what the cream part actually was. I think you should have made a more gradual transition so that it would be apparent that the white part crumbled and fell apart (or something like that).

Thanks judges.
It just goes to show how different judges react differently.
I got 5,5,3,3 on theme.

I tried to explain that the wall IS just a stand for him when he's not being used in the game, but I suppose, given time, I could have built a replica of the room in the movie to drop him into.

Cheers for the comments, great stuff. And cheers Ritual for the tips on dark skin.
And darklining, my mini painting bane!

Hi,

Firstly, I would like to thank the Chairman and judges for taking the time to make this event possible (even if FF did crush my ego with his scoring of my entry:sad2:).

@Jubilee: Congratulations on besting me (even if you did only spend 1/4 the amount of time that I did on your entry :( ). I will IM you tonight about what and where to send your prize.

@vincegamer: Same here, 5, 5, 3, 3. Just shows how much more insightful Skya and Duende are! :D

To round 3! :dancing2:

WOO HOO!!!!! Thanks Duende!!!!

What has suprised me about this round (apart from the sheer volume of DNF's!) is how much closer the scores are getting! (well, bar the one runaway entry that also happened to be my opponent!) And also how the different judges can interpret the same piece very differently- especially in the theme department. Just goes to show that this is IRON PAINTER and anything can happen!!

Will send you a PM about your prize TAB, congratulations on stealing round 2 and on such a fantastic entry! Hubby must be chuffed with that dragon!

@ Thryth - Of course Skya and I are more insightful, we're WOMEN!

(thanks to an unprecedented, and never to be duplicated 'bonus' point)

Are you subtly trying to tell me never to score "off of the scale" again?

Probably threw your math off.

:D

(Like it's that hard to do!)

Was it too subtle?
