Congratulations to the victors. The Vanquished should now contact their opponent and either send the 5 dollar (AMERICAN) via Paypal, or send them a miniature...

For those of you that had a NO SHOW for an opponent, lets give them a week to contact you. If you have NOT heard anything from them, let me know and I will make sure you get your deserved prize.

Congratulations to all winners! I had a blast in the contest and a cool opponent too (and darn, it was a close one :D).
Learning moment for myself was to pick a smaller model the next time ;). Although I had enough time, I lacked enough time to work on the quality of the painting.

So count me in next time...I will be ready!

Thanks to Jim and the members of the jury for their precious time :)

Fun filled scoring facts....

Highest point total overall

1. Maestro with an incredible 55!
2. Dr. EvilMonki and Stupid cow with 51.5 each.

Highest score in 'THEME'

1. Dr. EvilMonki with a 'perfect' 15
2. Several with 14 including Maestro, Malebolgia, James9487, and Beezlebrush.

Closest contested match-up

Lavon Yor pulled a 1 point victory away from the veteran (and last season finalist) Vincegamer

Not so close

Maestro's dominance in the scoring was a 22 point spread from his challenger Braxandur.

Technical Brilliance, the highest 'technical scores' were;

Maestro with 14 and Reigning IRON PAINTER CHAMP Skya also with 14

Lowest score ever to move onto the next round...

Hoblit with a paltry 18...Not the best score ever, but you can't argue with advancing!! Way to go!

Highest Overall Asthetic scorer
Maestro with 27
Stupid Cow with 25.5
Dr. Evilmonki with 25

Will anyone be able to stop the juggernaught of MAESTRO?

Will Skya defend her crown?

Will Dr. Evilmonki still be a weenie?

Will Hoblit break the 18 barrier?

Will you all finish in time?

All to be decided in the NEXT ROUND of IRON PAINTER!!

EricJ

Maestro, congrats on the highest overall point total!! And Malebolgia, you ended up with the highest, non-winning score, that was a tough matchup, between you two you got 100 points, and the next closest match up was 88!!

Good job all the winners, I look forward to seeing who makes it through round 2!

Congrats to the winners.

On a personal note, I think Malebolgia vs DrEvilMonki was the closest and most matched pair this time about. Really found myself wanting both to advance due to the great showing but knowing that only one could.

Still, what Iron Painter is all about - and a damn fine showing it was.

4 DNF's out of 14 matches. I suppose the odds that one would be in mine were pretty good, although I do feel bad that I went through over a lot more competent painters. Hopefully next round I can crack that 18 barrier, and at least finish the mini that I decide on. (Something smaller, maybe Frodo wearing the ring, or left talon of Roc. I reckon I could pull one of those off)

Just what I said Ritual!

Thought I had enough to go through like! Oh well. Not bad for my first comp, I kept it quiet, but that will have been about the 11th model Ive ever painted. Seem to get better every time I paint, but obviously not quick enough! Worked out I came 12th out of the 28 names in the hat, so I aint moaning. Now to contact my arch rival James9487 (where the hell did that opponent come from, planet of the painters??!)......

;) JK!

Hey, me and James nailed 92.5 between us! Unless my mathematics is as good as my prediction skills on going through to the next round! Devastated by the way!

Even though I didn't get a chance to comment, I did write down my picks of the matches, and the one I had trouble choosing between the most was between Callumrice and James. Both were excellently done and I'm also a big Eldar fan, so that was the hardest for me. (I picked Callum's ;) )

My absolute favorite entry was Skya's Magnificent Egos girl out in the rain. I love the rain effect and the twist on the "weathering" idea. (She's out in the weather!). So I know who I'll be rooting for next round! May the rest of you be cursed with split-ended brushes!

Considering my supposed impartiality....I agree. Skya's novel approach really impressed me. I was surprised too when I saw the 'low' scores she got for her 'use of the THEME'. The judges didn't obviously agree. But, she presevered and used her power house painting skills to triumph....

I really liked Skya's entry too, but I chose to award her mainly in the other two scores. I thought it was a clever take on the theme, but it was quite sparsely done, thus the 3 she got from me. The skillful execution of the effect earned her a 5 in the technical score and the visual result earned her an 8 in overall. So, I think I gave her a pretty fair score all things considered. :)

first off, congratz to all the wieners.... i mean winners.

secondly, im not a sore loser but i do think that my scores were rather low. personally i think that there was plenty of weathering, there is a rather decent amount of frost and snow on the model other than the base. and as for the technical quality, there are more layers of shading and highlighting on this mini than just about anything i have painted before. the red goes from almost black to almost blazing orange.

and to ERICJ, you said that you didnt look at pairings, i think maybe you should have as this is a round based elimination competition.

thirdly, im not a sore loser, im just a little pissed that i lost. i get jibbed by games workshop in all thier painting comps, so im trying to broaden my competition range and i guess its hard to get out of my old "im pissed cause i got jibbed" moods when i lose.

anyhoo, ill be watching the rest of the comp and cheering on my now new fav painter WREN. i always go for the team/player that knocks my team/player out. so WREN FOR THE WIN!!!!!!!

I disagree here. I like the fact that they take each one on its own merits. Plus, by doing it that way, it does tend to keep favortism out of the loop. Just my opinion though.

Hey JoD,

I can understand the disapointment, believe me, but at the same time it is all meant in good fun and I don't think anyone jibbed at you as we tried to critique and comment. Don't let the folks at GW mess with you - you do some nice solid work and with a bit more, I think you can really raise the bar pretty easily.

Now, I've seen above that comments have been made about Skya's rain and with your post, the snow on your base, and from a 'judge' point of view I figured I would go ahead and pop in on that as frankly I gave both of you low scores in that area and for a reason.

How you accomplish that is up to you. "Weathered" could be anything from a rusty sword to a well worn pair of boots. Ragged clothing, oil stained hat. Dusty cape, etc. etc. ....The theme is to make something look weathered or aged or distressed.

I debated for a good twenty minutes on whether or not 'weathered' meant to include the elements or just the aging, distressing, oxidization .. blah, blah, blah. What I finally came to the conclusion of was that the examples given above really put things solidly in the 'age, corrosion, dirty' category vs. the elements and consequently, I scored as I did.

If it had been the elements included in that, Skya would have won hands down and you would have come in pretty damn good as well as you made a great looking snow base. That being said, it didn't (in my mind) and thus I didn't. Of course, Jim might have meant for it to be a bit more open to interpritation and if that is the case, we best get that hammered out for the next theme.

Either way, you did a good showing and I think you should take another shot at this when it comes around again.

For starters, I just can't believe you called me a weiner! :)

Second, this is a fun and easy going contest and no one should take it too seriously because the main purpose is for fun. The Golden Demon is something to get more serious and worked up about.

Also, I think it takes guts for the judges to post publicly exactly how they rated each piece as it opens them up to be criticized for their methods. If they were being unfair then they wouldn't be willing to show and explain their votes.

I liked your entry and hope to see you next time around.

Wren

Congratulations to the winners, and all the entrants. I'm very impressed with the levels of painting and creativity that are on display with this, and happy to have the opportunity to try to push my skills doing this. Also thank you to our esteemed organizer and judges. I don't envy them the task of having to assess and rate all of the entries, and give them props for not only doing so but putting their opinions out there where we can judge and question them. I may not agree with every rating, but I respect the effort that went into all of them.

JoD, I understand how you're feeling. This is a hobby where we keep putting ourselves out there for judging and critique. The ideal is we're all supposed to be very nonchalant and 'it's an honour just to be nominated', but the reality is that most of us want, and usually think we deserve, to win. Or to at least get more recognition and acclaim for our efforts. When we don't get it, it's a bitter pill to swallow, and it is hard to shake off the bitter sometimes. I just erased some stuff on this topic because I'm still attempting shake off some recent bitter, myself, I guess. It was an honour to have you as my opponent. I guess one thing to keep in mind with the online contests is that the photography can be a factor. I know I've found red to be a hard colour to photograph, and have heard others say the same.

i know this is meant in fun, im just really sick of not winning competitions when i know that i should. i think that weather covers frost as well as dirt and rust etc. im not trying to be up myself but i think im about as good as im gunna get and im pretty damn good.

there is no way in hell that im gunna miss the next comp unless my fingers fall off and i cant paint. painting is pretty much my life, along with motorbikes and my girlfriend. i think for the next comp i shall have to find a camera that shows what ive done more clearly.

im sorry if i offended anyone with my outburst, the main reason im like this is i need to prove to myself that i can do this well.

Hey JoD,

Nathan

No no no! Letting the judges interpret the theme as they see fit makes perfect sense to me...

Just as allowing the creativity of the contestants come into play. If an artist decides to take a risk with a 'different' take on the theme, the judges may or may not reward them. The 'openess' of the theme makes this contest very unique and very exciting.

For instance, (I'll pick on my friend Vincegamer)...Vince decided to go with an elderly lady 'weathered skin'. It was a calculated risk and obviously it didn't pay off...but I applaud the creativity.

I hope you all see my point without me becoming overbearing.....In a nutshell, to me, the judges interpretation is just as important as the artists creativity!

Skya
09-27-2006, 10:24 PM
Yeah, I went back and reread the description and figured I'd probably get marked down on theme. If it hadnt actually been explained out I would have been a tad dissapointed, but as it was I kinda rolled over it with my own interpretation so no big.

I don't know what you're complaining about. You got double the scores on theme that I did. ;)

It's an unfortunate truth that judging is entirely subjective and that there are many ways to interpret the theme ingredient, but only three people whose interpretation matters. I also feel that, although I did not go overboard with dirt and grime, I painted my model with "a well worn pair of boots."

The way I look at it, at the end of the competition, even though no one else tell that there was something worn out there, I am happy with my model. I look at it and say "Yes, that is exactly the look I was going for, and she's as well an expression of my vision as she can be."

On the other hand, maybe I should stop painting in the kinds of competitions I know I'll lose.. :)

(I'll have a pinot grigio please. And do you have any cheese with the wine?)

Instead, I'll just drink my Belgian White Beer. (Blue Moon if you're interested.)

Hrm. I realize that I probably shouldn't say this. As I mentioned previously, I'm dealing with a bit of my own bitter right now. Guess after years of always trying to be pleasant and mature online I'm having a brief moment of being tired of sucking it up when I'm less than thrilled about something.

JoD - you do get where you're pretty much openly insulting me, in two separate messages, no less, right? I applaud your confidence and your faith in your skills, but I'd also appreciate at least a pretense of respect for me as your opponent, not to mention for the other entrants and the judges. I haven't seen you taking the time to review and tactfully comment on each of the entries yet as the judges have had to do, and as several others have chosen to do. It's no easy task. (And BTW, yes, I think I painted the better mini and beat you fair and square. I was doing that whole being respectful of you as my opponent thing earlier, I don't think I just slid into the win because of a semantic point over weathering versus weather.)

I think my paint job was better than the numerical scores I received, too, and I think there are aspects of my paint job that are underappreciated. I also think that there were several seriously kickbutt entries, and that most of the negative critiques that have been made against my mini are fair and give me good starting points for areas to improve. You can keep whining and insulting me, or you can look at the feedback and decide to work on the points people mentioned to better appeal to the popular vote, or decide you want to paint purely for yourself and accept that you might not win contests that way.

wren, i have looked at the comments that have been made about my entry, i know for a fact that i dont need to work more on my shading and highlighting, i think 15 shades is enough to make something look shaded and highlighted.

as for insulting you, WTF, where have i done this. i in no way insult people without good reason and i have no reason to insult you.

if you really want to know what i thought of your entry i thought it was rather flat, i could barely see any depth to your colours. your cannon itself was remarkably lifelike but the crewman was not a strong point. i agree that there were some rather amazing entries and im not saying that i had the best entry im just saying that i thought i painted to what should have been a better score.

i in no way believe that i should have won, just thought that i painted alot better than scored. just alittle annoyed that the first theme is so openly varied in its interpritation i guess.

JOD have you actually looked at the PHOTO you put forward? That is a flat as hell image, if you have done a perfect paint job it is not our fault if you cannot present it properly in the gallery.

And yes both of your posts were insulting to both Wren and the judges, your last one was simply petulant.

Congratulations to all the winners and a big thanks to all the judges for the effort put in.

drevilmonki: yes i have said that my photo was bad, but i can still see some depth to the colours in it. but then again i dont have photoshop do i.

ok can someone please tell me what ive said that is so insulting, cause i cant see it!

i congratulated the winners, made a sugestion to the judges and i sent a pm to wren asking about her prize and as of yet have received no reply. considering that wren was online before, during and after i sent it i find that to be a little rude when acusing me of insulting her in some way.

ive aplogised for my outburst and dont see any need to further do so. so if i have offended anyone badly please pm me how i have done so and we can discuss it in private.

In your first message you said

and to ERICJ, you said that you didnt look at pairings, i think maybe you should have as this is a round based elimination competition.

which to me suggested that you thought yours was by far the stronger entry of our pairing, and that Eric was a bad judge not to realize this.

It suggested that, but I gave the benefit of the doubt to your being disappointed and just venting, or to my reading too much into it, and I tried to write a supportive reply.

Then you wrote

i know this is meant in fun, im just really sick of not winning competitions when i know that i should. i think that weather covers frost as well as dirt and rust etc. im not trying to be up myself but i think im about as good as im gunna get and im pretty damn good.

That seemed to pretty clearly be saying that you should have won against me (and might even suggest you think you should have won, period), that the judges made a big mistake not to see that, and that the only reason you didn't win is because they didn't count the frost. Maybe that's not what you meant to say, and maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that's how it came off, and I guess it particularly got up my nose coming immediately after my attempt to be supportive to you. I really do understand how you feel. I quite recently and several times in the past very much wanted to have a big gripe and get some support but forced myself to walk away from the computer for fear I'd end up saying something I'd regret or come off looking like a big baby.

My apologies if I overreacted to what you said, but I hope you can see a little where I might have started to see some insult in the way you were phrasing things, even if that wasn't your intent.

Edit addition: Oops, sorry about the PM, I missed the little note at the top of the page that I had one, I don't get them that often so I don't check that hard for them.

In competitions, there are winners and losers. Not everyone agrees on the results and that's just how things goes. I'm not saying this just because I made it into round 2. I had my share of bad times too. Best way to face it is to put it aside and come back stronger next time. Peace.

Looking forward to meeting my opponents for next round.

Oh yes I almost forgot to bootlick the judges! Thanks for all the hard work judging and commenting.

as for my replies to you, im sorry if i got up your nose, i guess its the stubborn irish in me.

hope we can come to a peace between us....

I love debates like this - shows that there is a human behind the screen there and although I worried a little as I was reading this was happy that ya'll got it out there.

Myself, I find these contests to be a huge hoot as I get to see the different ideas and pesonalities that come to the fore and you get a feeling for a person more than just a few posts here and there and to see the cerativity involved.

I'm not offended in the least and I doubt any of the other judges or organizers are either as frankly, we get hit with a lot of stuff behind the scenes as it is and you should see the whip marks I put on some of these fella's in private. I have to admit, I honestly do put a bit of thought into each of these entries when it is time for me to vote as I know that they are going to be made public and I want to be fair, even to a fault some times when I clearly have a favorite 'person' due to knowing them a bit more or longer, etc, etc.

Now, when I critique, I do try to be honest and one thing that I can positively say, from my point of view, that will affect the contest are two things .. photography and being aggressive with your theme.

In an online contest, the fact is, no matter how good your piece looks in hand, if you don't get a great picture of it, that is going to count against you. Get a light tent, pick up one of the free photo editors if you can't get ahold of photoshop, put a complimenting background to your piece ... it all really helps.

When I say being aggressive with your theme, I mean it .. take chances, go all out, and really push yourself and stuff it in our faces so that we HAVE to see what you've done. If I have to guess and really search and have it pointed out to me, odds are it isn't going to make as much of an impression to me as one that I open up and go 'oh, lookie there'.

In the end, it is meant to be fun and while I'm at it, I'll state that this is what the Iron Painter is from 'my' perspective. Either way, I expect to see all of you in the next IP if you've got a lick of sense about you.

Can I moan about James now? Your entry sucked, the 50 points you received were well over rated and I didnt see your model being fit for the bin! HA! That felt good!

Only Jesting (get it?) I really enjoyed taking part in this comp and found it a good learning curve for me. JOD, you never stop learning when your painting and you will always improve, so when you say you have got as good as your going to get, you havent. You'll get even better in time.

Everyone thinks that their painting is better than everyone elses deep down, but at the same time this is just a bit of fun, and to get a realistic view of how good your painting skills actually are you need criticism from an independant unbias source, like the judges here.

As I have PM'ed James9487, I thought my model was good, but his was cracking. (he will be receiving the two slayers I had lined up for the next round) and he was very civil over the whole thing, as was I and thats the way it should be. No sore losers here!

If it helps, if I was a judge I would have had it closer, I was not a big fan of wrens model, although the best probably did win in the end. In the same token though, I would be pissed if I was vincegamer, losing by a point!

So wheres the happy medium? God knows, all I know is that Im itching for Iron Painter 3 and hope to draw James9487 again. THE GRUDGE MATCH!

Well done to all the winners by the way, and unlucky Tzor, I liked that model.

Great fun so far guys!

I'm happy to progress to the next stage, especially after drawing a tricky competitor in Paintingploddy, who's entry was pretty sweet. Always nice to stomp an antipodean though lol :D

Weathering - I just chose to take the theme literally and covered every square inch with various levels of gunk and rot - a bit of a no brainer really and it certainly didn't require any subtle thought to recognise the theme :D

Just as a side note - thanks to DrEvil, I re-photographed my entry using the white plastic bag thing to diffuse the light.... great results and a much better, less saturated pic. Cheers DEM!

Damn Kiwi. We'll have to bowl a few more underarms next time.

Seriously though the Thrall was a lovely piece of work, and I'd like to second all the comments about the basing, very clever. I think it could have beaten me without the figure.

Even though I didn't get a chance to comment, I did write down my picks of the matches, and the one I had trouble choosing between the most was between Callumrice and James. Both were excellently done and I'm also a big Eldar fan, so that was the hardest for me. (I picked Callum's ;) )

Cheers for the support Duende, I had a few followers of this model it was well thought of, just not enough though! :-(

The contest is designed to be a community builder more so than a flat out 'competition'. The stakes are relatively low and the only real accolades here are fleeting at best.

I understand the frustration that can come from on-line contests...but I can't see where any of this could be made 'more fair'. I randomly choose the matchups, randomly choose the theme, we have 3 impartial judges, and the combined score is what advances you. PLUS....even if you score poorly on the theme, it is only a percentage of the overall score. (thats not to say THEME isn't important) But Skya, for instance, advanced despite a relatively poor showing in theme.

But my intent for this contest wasn't to sow discontent, I am glad we can have the discussion, but I hope it goes no further than that. I hope, after all is said and done, there are no ill feelings towards anyone or the community here in general.

Please also remember...way back in the rules that I clearly stated that this contest is my doing...any ill feelings should be directed towards me and no others.

On a POSITIVE note....I drew the names and the new "THEME" ingredient last night.....but I won't release the info until tommorow! But, its a doosy!

Hi JoD. I appreciate and accept your apology, and offer you one of my own for my being too sensitive and overreacting to your comments. I would be happy to have peace between us!

The photography of miniatures seems to me to be as much a skill as painting the damn things, and one I find more frustrating, really. Every time I think I've finally cracked the mystery of it and improved, six months or a year down the road there's something else I figure out that makes a huge difference and I have to try not to get too frustrated about all the comps I submitted pictures to in the meantime, or the minis I no longer have in my possession to rephotograph. Ah well, at least it's better than taking pictures of real people, they don't move around, make stupid poses, or get red eye. ;->

For instance, (I'll pick on my friend Vincegamer)...
Why not. Everyone else does. :(

Vince decided to go with an elderly lady 'weathered skin'. It was a calculated risk and obviously it didn't pay off...but I applaud the creativity.
Basically I had various minis primed and sitting on my desk - industrial type robomech, shabby medieval pilgrim and the old woman. I took a long time deciding which to do and ultimately did the one I felt would be most fun for me, to heck with the judges (not literally - I love you guys).

Funny! That was the original title for this contest! "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE" But, by introducing the theme I thought the homage to Iron Chef seemed more appropriate.

Just need some color commentary! :) Too bad I don't really have the time, I'd piece together some pictures of the minis with theme music from the original Iron Chef and some commentary on the minis with my (very) rudimentary video editing skills.

A man walks into a bar. Pulling out a katana he begins to chop off the tops of all the bottles on the shelf. First the scotch, then the vodka, then the whiskey, then the rye until only one bottle remained unbroken. It was a bottle of rum.

Which was appropriate because everyone knows that in the end there can be only rum.

On the other hand, a true Iron competition needs one actor and one politician as the judges. So decide among yourselves judges who is the actor and who is the politician.
