View Full Version : Scibor going into the miniature buisness ..

Scibor, who does work for Micro-art Studios and recently had pressed out a ton of Wood Elf resculpts for ebay (odds are, if you peruse CMON, you see them) has decided to start up his own line of miniatures. Thought they looked pretty promising myself. Like the hood on the thief.

They look great so far! I bet that thief will look even better once he gets a few more appendages ;) Can't wait to see more!

If his conversions are anything to go by there will be a thousand of these this time next week.
Thats not a bad thing though, talented guy.

Oh yeah, he's a very talented individual - can't wait to see what he comes up with. Was following a thread somewhere else though where someone got into his arse about him doing 'presses' or some such. Apparently he carves or does some sort of 'mold' in which he then presses GS and gets his model .. etc. Apparently how he does a lot of his Wood Elf stuff.
Despite that, it takes talent either way to make those presses and to sculpt out those miniature. Can't wait to see them myself.

Scibor definately has his own distinct style, and these are very good.
As for molds/presses, I don't think that detracts from his work, hell, I wouldn't want to sculpt dozens of stupid leaves to stick on the minis either. And if he uses them in any other part of his work, he's skilled enough to disquise it VERY well so everything looks basically unique

These are very good, I particularly like the wizard and would buy it.
His space marine stuff was good (if you happen to like Space marines)

I really like that thief! Has an old Clyde Caldwell look for some reason, like I've seen it in something he has painted. The wizards is nice too. Dwarf I don't care for.
What size are these?

So the real question is now, how long it take GW to sue him for IP, it looks like those bases he stuck the greens to are GW issue

Very cool!
I just don't like the big honkin' sword the hooded, thief-like one is holding. It looks a bit too gaudy for a figure that seems to be needing to be more subtle. Does that make sense?
Just my little opinion! :wavey:

Yeah I agree with the sword on the thief. I think he needs a more elegant weapon. That's easy to fix though.

10-03-2005, 04:58 PM
I think a large fighting knife or something like that would have been nice, but I have to agree, the sword itself is a bit too larger.
As for the bases Eric, not sure, but I think you can buy those anywhere from major manufacturers. Might be GW copyrights but I don't think so (I'll look later tonight).

I like the shape of the sword, it gives the feeling of a more exotic type thief/assassin, but it could be about half the size it is.
Nathan, I don't really know about the bases really... :embarasse

Oh don't get me wrong, the shape of it is fantastic, I like the more exotic stuff myself, just needs to be half the size as you say.
As for the bases - nope, don't think GW has license on the bases. Here is a link of a studio that makes and sells them as well (this is one out of twenty I found in about two minutes of looking).

They are done well but they seem to lack something, like definition and the little extra spark, like they are half done or something. Everything seems to be too soft. Does that make sense?

So is there a site we can look at to see these?
I quite like the sword the thief is holding just for the comedy value.
"Stop thief!"
*thief stops, turns around and pulls a gaint mother of a sword from his bag of holding (or somthing). :firedevil
hehehe
Anyway, I also really like the look of the pig/boar...it's so mean And what they should look like.

His site isn't put together yet, as I understand it, it, and the miniatures, will be available at the end of this month or sometime next month.

Some updates on the Scibor miniatures - he's got some interesting ones, don't like them all, but some of them are comical.
Thief. Has potiential! Not sure if he's planning on doing the base like that or not. My personal dislike is the sword. Some folks will love it, others hate it. Easily enough changed though.

An Orc and his Boar. Like everything except for the orcs face. Just looks off to me.

Dwarf and his Chicken. Puts a new spin on 'chokein your chicken' but this one has me laughing. Dwarf has some serious man boobs going on, but overall, a great miniature. Hope he doesn't cast it with the base, personal preference.

Midget Mage. Not the real name I'm sure - but I like this one.

They are turning out quite nice, and definatly his minis have his own feel to them. Sometimes however I feel like to some degree he may be doing the mini line in order to justify his other sculpting using press work. Sort of like a "see, I can sculpt"
which isn't a bad thing, since then we get the minis :)

Heh, very well may be right there Eric. I've seen a few forums where his press stuff for auctions has gotten hammered, but he shows here easily enough that he knows how to sculpt very well, and to be honest, I think he was making more in his press stuff for ebay than I was in a month of workin' my arse off at a 'real' job.
Power to him I say!

Speaking of the 'press' work, does anyone here do anything similar, I'd like to know how you do it.....

BTW, just read that Scibor is creating another weapon, a short sword or dagger, to go with his thief as apparently he's heard the masses over the whole weapon's thing.

Thanks for the link Green Stuff. So you get the original item you want to copy, chuck talc at it make a milliput 'mould' - how do you stop the milliput 'mould' from sticking to the green stuff.....water? Vaseline?

I use water, but vaseline works fine. By the way, the mould can be made out of anything (green stuff, fimo, ....). In the article, Cyril melts plastic on a surface and then presses his moulds.
@all : no prob :). Cyril has great articles on his site both on sculpting, conversions, and painting.

I have been using a press recently to do rivets, and I've found licking the press works too :)
Sure I may be poisoning myself :(
But in the words of CindyD. you don't always have a bowl of water or vassoline, but I take my mouth everywhere :)

Don't bother with putty!
Heat some sprue or styrene rod and then press it into the mould. Works a treat :)

@CL : All the credit goes to Cyril. He's also recently put up some tutorials on how to do chipped off paint on rusted metal (>> here << (http://neomodel.free.fr/tuto/tuto-socle-flamer2.html) ) and how to build an industrial water recycling holding tank (>> here << (http://neomodel.free.fr/tuto/tuto-socle-flamer1.html)).

IMHO, he's the one who has contributed technically the most to the mini scene these last years. He democratized NMM and he did the first glowing eye/armor scratched Space Marines. Since his wife is of japanese origin, he's constantly between France and Japan so he has a lot of occasions to try out new technics and materials (you should have seen the debate they had on Créafigs over transparent resins to do water ... went crazy :P). Plus since he's a graphic artist, he knows the major painting theories and technics. A man to watch ... well if he gets over his grudge with Rackham and GW :P.

I agree thart Cyril is one of the major contributors within mini painting. Just look at the number of people basically copying his stuff over and over. I've spent hours and hours inspecting his stuff and have learnt very much by it. He always seem to cover new ground, not reproducing the same type of stuff all the time, which is very inspiring. I'd say he and Allan C are my biggest sources of inspiration among mini painters.
EricJ
11-14-2005, 12:26 PM
yes, but what is with the French and Nurgle/Decay! :)
I definately think there is a good synergy among french painters now where they push one another to constantly improve on what has been done to push many of them to the top in the world. Seems there are similar things happening in Spain, Germany and even Italy. However, something I don't really see happening in the US unfortunately.

The US is a much bigger place. It's easier for us Europeans to all get to the same events and compete....

You've got me curious now ... what grudge?
Oh, it's no secret ;). He even explains it on his site. Basically, he used to work for Rackham when it was starting (hence the NMM trend of Rackham;)). They stole one of his ideas. He brought them to court, and won.
Concerning GW, it's a mix. First of all, when you win a GD, you give away your rights to the image of your mini; so you can't have it published in an other media then one owned by GW (for someone like Cyril, that's bad for his work). Secondly, he doesn't like how they organise the contests. This part on GW, is what I've read from him or heard from other people, so it's less sure.
